stupid question...

for everybody worried about old apps (like visualhub) and any others for that matter not working, why can't you make 2 partitions and leave your "old" system intact and install SL on another partition and boot from whichever one has the apps working to do what you need to do?

i mean, i needed to upgrade my small 80gb hd, so i got a 500 and put my WORKING tiger system on it and left another partition to put snow leopard on and add my apps as they become updated to be compatible with it.

in fact, i have a lot of stuff that doesn't get used very often on tiger and would like to keep the new SL system 'cleaner'.....just my heavily used apps. so i will always keep the tiger system to boot off of and use.

Erase and Install and Windows Partition

If I do a Erase and Install will it delete Windows Partition? or it will format only Mac Partition?

appreciate the help? :)

Never do an upgrade - clean install, clean install, clean install, clean install!

Agreed. I missed the mailman because I was out buying some food... came home and had the notification on the door, he's coming back on Monday...
Luckily, I downloaded the GM overnight and have installed it on a USB drive just to leave the old systems intace and check what's working and what not.

So far, everything I need seems to work. Lots of freeware has beta versions that work nicely on Snow Leopard. These guys do a much better job of getting up-to-date stuff than software makes like Adobe, Microsoft, or even Apple. I didn't force the 64 bit Kernel though. Once I got confidence that everything is working on Snow Leopard, I'll re-install it on the internal hard drive and keep a minimal version of the Leopard system on there, just in case.

I recommend this to anyone: test drive the new OS by installing to and booting it from an external drive and only really upgrade once all the stuff you need works.

Delivery

Apple is being really cheap, I live in the US and I just checked and they sent my copy of Snow Leopard yesterday via the post office?! I won't get it until the 1st and I ordered it like back in june.

How the hell could you have ordered it in June when it was just released for pre-order a few days ago?

Installed now on my MacBook Air. The reports of the USB 881B not working with Snow Leopard are wrong. It works but you do have to reconfigure it. Install on the laptop went smooth no problems.

Now to play with it for a while and see what does and doesn't work...

VirtualBox works fine and is free. I don't understand why it doesn't get more publicity. Apple and others never mention it.
It's because Apple can't sell free products, but Parallels and get a share of the sale ;)

Now something else: The Apple website reads:

"The world's most advanced operating system. Finely tuned."

and

"Better. Faster. Easier."

And following that link I read this:

"Automatic updates for printer drivers."

"Snow Leopard makes sure you always have the most up-to-date driver so you can get the most from your printer. When you plug in a printer, Mac OS X can download the latest driver available over the Internet. And it periodically checks to make sure it has the latest driver. If not, it downloads the newest version through Software Update. Easy."

Easy? So why doesn't my otherwise perfectly good functioning Canon printer – up and running until Leopard 10.5.8 – no longer work?!? Wait I got it; that's another invention!!!

I am really glad to have installed the upgrade on a hackintosh – which I only use for editorial work – and not on my Mac Pro 2009 octo, otherwise I would not have been able to print invoices!!!

In short; this so called "upgrade" seems to be a pretty nasty one for some people, including myself. Most people will say: I must have missed the fine print, again. Or we don't understand the word "upgrade". It is of course just Canon's fault, for not providing Apple the proper drivers... but it would have been great when Apple checked things.

Audio in Parallels 4.0 VM no longer working

I run Parallels Desktop 4.0 with a Win XP Pro guest VM.

Prior to the Snow Leopard upgrade I could use my USB Headset and Cisco VOIP client with no issues.

Now, all audio with or without the headset is a loud squeal filled with static.

Tried reinstalling the Parallels VM additions, rebooted. Nothing worked. Parallels audio is pretty much broken in the VM now.

:(

Zero problems with CS2, Rosetta?

So, when I installed, I checked the custom button and clicked "Rosetta". I have had zero problems with my Adobe CS2 and Macromedia 8 apps.

I was so eager for Snow Leopard but all this incompatibility stuff is making me feel uneasy. I'm a final year design student and I was just wondering if anyone knows hands-on if the following applications/software are compatible with Snow Leopard:

-Adobe CS3 Master Collection
-Quark Xpress 7
-Toast Titanium 8
-Suitcase Fusion (1st gen)
-Office 2004
-Norton AntiVirus 10

I really don't want to spend any extra money on switching over to new versions of the software above and would prefer to be safe than sorry. Sorry for any inconvenience and thanks for your time :)

Logitech Revolution MX

Just installed Logitech Revolution MX and noticed that my mouse buttons weren't working like they should. Went to logitech to download latest control app (updated 8/9/2009) and it says "OS not supported" and won't install. :(

Thoth Works

I can report that Thoth works in SL. It takes a few minutes to load, but it's fast on SL. This is a PowerPC app so it requires Rosetta. Sorting is really fast now. Well at least it seems that way to me. :/

NOTE: The Author no longer supports this app. (He's not getting enough money too.)

Mike from Parallels here,

Good news, I just wanted to let everyone know that Parallels 4 is working for the new OS X Snow Leopard.

If you want to know more head over to our blog post on the subject.

Thanks

@MuMMaDaLi

I know adobe cs4 works

quarkexpress 7 i do believe works, but has lost support under snow leopard.

Here are a few apps I've tested and found to work just fine with Snow Leopard on my system anyway that there were some questions/doubts about going in.

Quicken 2006 R6 (Rosetta required), EyeTV 2.5.3, RadioShark 2.0.2, Office 2004 11.5.5 (Rosetta required), Parallels Desktop 4.0 3844, iWork '08 (Pages, Keynote & Numbers).

With Rosetta, did you do a custom install of SL or it works another way?

One of the big ones I've heard floating around is that AT&T USB Cards are a no go. Specifically the USB 881B, I'll test that myself and find out. But that really kills me updating the laptops.

On the desktop side I have a lot of pro apps I'm worried about but most have been confirmed to work by now.

Things I still have questions about on the consumer side...
  • last.fm or iScrobbler
  • Drobo and Drobo Dashboard
  • NetNewsWire

I got it working (after a lot of frustrations): https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8376105&posted=1#post8376105

So far, things look pretty good all in all. Definitely a nice speed increase for 30 bucks!

I had trouble with RapidWeaver but there was a beta easily available that works like a champ.

Transmit works beautifully. Parallels 4 works great, not quite understanding the complaints over 3 not working as it is quite an old version. 4 is definitely worth the upgrade.

Programs I'm having a problem with are NeoOffice of course and tsMuxerGUI. Hope they get those patched up soon!

For anyone wondering... Monster Trucks Nitro works beautifully! :D

Beyond all that, I'm disappointed that my 2008 MP STILL won't go to sleep.

As long as you don't use Disk Utility to wipe the drive/partitions and just point the SL install to the Mac OS partition you'll be fine, it will leave your Windows partition alone.

BUT... that said, backing up before doing an install is always a good idea. :)

I just went to install one of my essential add-ons (Xmarks for Safari), and I was told the sync application could not open. I then googled around, and I found many threads about people complaining how Apple broke this and that and how it doesn't "just work".

I'm not trying to be an Apple shill here, but how long have these folks had developer builds, and how long have they had to be working on these products? I know Apple removed input managers, so does this possibly mean the end for xmarks, and might it be a way to move people exclusively to Safari if they have iPhones and iPod touches?

I guess I'm more bummed that Xmarks couldn't find a way to make it work AND doesn't appear to display anything on their page about this rather than pissed off at Apple for "breaking" things.

You're complaining about Xmarks? I just had a look then at what it was, I thought you were referring to something that was of great strategic importance but in reality it is pointless hackware crap that adds nothing productive to the computer. its almost as bad as the last person on here whining because this dinky little widget that moved the cursor to a button was no longer working.

I swear sometimes as if there were legions of people who are up till the early hours of the morning searching the internet for more crap to install on their Mac.

I might be going back to Leopard. I did a clean installation but migrated my user.

My browsers crash after using the Open File dialog box and my Spotlight tags still aren't being read. I feel like I'm blind in Finder now.

Odd thing. 10.6 tells me the PCT file format is incompatible with 64 bit and to check 'Open in 32 bit mode' in Preview's info pane. Did that but PCT files wouldn't open (nothing happened), so then unchecked it again and now PCT files open.
