As per the title.

I'd be interested to know if you feel your new M1 lives up to all of the hype?

I'm quite happy with mine, and I've got used to the 13" size (coming from a 24" iMac.)

Let me know how you're feeling about your new machine.
I have a very similar configuration, but I opted for the larger SSD.

The crazy thing about this chip is it genuinely punching way outside of it’s weight class. I’m not gentle on my machine, I actually bought a MacBook Pro 16 back in April because I can make my MacBook Pro 13 2017 cry regularly. Can I slow down the MacBook Pro 16? Sure, but it’s usable and the fan is going FULL BLAST.

Can I make the M1 MacBook Pro 13? I mean, kinda, but not really?

I can load up Windows 10, while being on a 15 person Teams call, and running multiple applications, while presenting, and everything will run smoothly. I’ve just never seen anything like this before.

Even that may be an understatement. The more I put my M1 through its paces, the more convinced I am that Apple actually undersold the performance and capabilities of this machine. The only time I've gotten this machine to start spinning beachballs was when I intentionally tried to do so by opening multiple tabs in Safari, and that took around 180 open tabs with 20 of those being YouTube videos.

We have the same consoles, too :) .

I'm extremely happy with my new Air (8/8 cores, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD).

No issues, does everything I need it to, and it just seems like an excellent fit for me.

Last year I bought the (then) new 13" MacBook Pro (1.4GHz with 2 TB-ports) maxed at 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, to replace my 2010 11" MBA (which I loved). The MBP was also a nice fit, spec-wise, and did everything I needed it to. But I could never get used to (or find a good use for) the touch bar. Also, even if I rarely do any "heavy lifting" with my Mac, it still got warm, and the fan would kick in every now and then.

The Air - on the other hand - does everything that MBP could (at least) just as well, while keeping cool and remaining silent. I love this machine.

The screen is better** than "the old" MBP (though slightly less bright), no touch bar, and an even smaller and lighter form factor. ** I might be slightly biased, but I did put the two side by side to have a look.

The speakers were better on the MBP (and - supposedly - even better on the new M1 MBP), but I always stream music using Airplay to my Denon CEOL Piccolo, so that doesn't matter for me on a day to day basis.

Theres very specific reasons for me saying this, but I do think Apples Efficiency cores are equal to, if not better than an Intel Core i7 at much lower clock speeds on a per core basis.

I watch Activity Monitor like a hawk. I’ve been able to validate this, through convoluted ways, because I have issues. Typically the first 4 Cores in CPU History are typically High Efficiency cores. I typically exist with about 50-60% CPU total capacity.

May I ask how you’re loading up Windows 10, please?

Is anyone concerned with the un-exchangeable ssd drive with the M1 or any macbook?
During the 7 years i had my previous iMac with an 256 gb SSD I never ran in to problems with it.

So no, I’m not worried at all with the SSD in my M1 mini. Also since I have an active TM back up on my NAS all the time I won't lose any data when the SSD finally gives in and by that time it probably will be time to upgrade anyway (oh and since I have a NAS almost all of the actually important data is stored on that anyway).

If I had one of the laptop M1 macs I would be more worried about it breaking if I would drop it or the screen hinge cracking before the soldered in SSD.

No, because I knew going in what I was getting. And it isn't just Apple that does this - I had an Asus laptop I bought in 2016 that had the first 8 GB of memory on the motherboard, so I couldn't reuse it when I replaced it.

I have upgraded memory and HDD -> SSD on 3 older Macs earlier this year (2009 MacBook, 2010 MacBook Pro 17" and 2014 Mac mini), and it was nice to be able to do that. :)

So I do understand for the people that want to upgrade at will that the M1 Macs are not as desirable as they could be.

In my case with the MBP M1 (8 / 256) I bought what I wanted/needed, and I am good with not being able to upgrade.

Heck, my 2014 Mac mini only has 4 GB memory, running Big Sur, and the performance for me is acceptable (especially due to the SSD upgrade) and I have had it since 2016. If it weren't for the fact that I want to eventually replace the Intel 2014 Mac mini with either an M1 mini or whatever other (if any) cool new desktop options may be released, I would keep using it for years.

And that Mac mini with a PowerPC chip that I bought in 2005, with 512 MB memory and about a 140 GB HDD? I used it until 2016 when I replaced it with the Intel 2014 Mac mini. Granted, my usage was basic - if I had depended on powerful software that migrated to Intel then I would have had to replace it sooner.

Nope, I have many backups. Never put faith in any storage medium, always backup. Insurance and warranty covers hardware replacement.
Yep--I used to pay monthly for off-site backups, but now iCloud Drive is my off-site backup and my 500 GB external drive is my local Time Machine backup. Don't need any more than that and I could have a new machine set up in minutes using one or the other.

To be honest, I haven't gamed in months.

You know when you just lose the desire?

I thought Cyberpunk was full of bugs on last gen? Is that true?
I'm a very unusual gamer. My work is pretty busy, and I carry a very high goal to perform every year. My focus is largely on me being able to execute. With that said, right around the fall, I do spend a month or two where I play a lot (maybe 16 to 20 hours.

I'm happy with performance of my new Air M1. Works very fast and very long.

When I recently participated in zoom conference (Rosetta version) it took 6% of battery per hour (with video recording to my Air M1). So it seems that Air M1 can work 18 hours in zoom conference!

All apps work very fast.

I've got a problem with a rogue beta update that I neither want nor asked for but that's with Apple engineering now.
Obviously after a re-install (that offered Big Sur Beta again) and then another try with my USB installer that has 11.1 on it, which worked ok. Sadly it's still offering the beta update even though I'm not enrolled.
Apart from that I'm very happy with the M1 :) It's zipping along quite nicely!

Man, I really feel for you that you're still having this issue.

How about calling Apple Support?

Hope you get it fixed soon (must be very jarry, and deflating as it's your new "toy.")

Yes, Apple support (engineering) are now on to it and will ring me tomorrow.
It's ok, it's just a bit of messing around until they sort out why it's offering that update.
Once it's sorted I'll fresh install and start again :)
It's all very odd.
