Heh, I’m sick and tired of working from home. Pre-pandemic, I was commuting by train, which I really don’t mind at all. It’s much nicer than driving - I can read, watch something, nap etc. No need to worry about feeling tired on the road. I used to have my air con on cold and radio on full blast to stay awake on the drive back. Mornings were fine, as I’m a morning person, but driving back was no fun.

Looking forward to going back...hopefully around spring time but probably more realistically H2 next year.
I think I would like commuting by train as well, for the reasons you give. Good train infrastructure doesn't seem to be a country-wide priority in the uSA.

Are you sure? An Intel Iris Plus 640 is faster than the M1 GPU?

we’re talking about Radeon Pro 5300 on the 5K iMac not the 21.5” base model.
Selling my imac and getting the new m1 Mac mini will let me save at least 1000$ if I don’t exaggerate on monitor choice. In the meantime till AS iMacs arrive, I can use this setup.

In a van down by the river
Saw this in a Psychology Today article (bold emphasis mine):

"Studies show that delayed gratification is one of the most effective personal traits of successful people. People who learn how to manage their need to be satisfied in the moment thrive more in their careers, relationships, health, and finances than people who give in to it."

So you are successful and thriving since you can put off diving in and using your new M1. Keep repeating that to yourself until you can use it... :D

quite happy so far with my 13" MacBook Pro. but i also upgraded from an early 2015 MacBook Air. Did not expect to love the keyboard so much. not a huge fan of the touchbar yet, but also sure that i will find some applications that I'm not aware of.

My M1 MBP is my first MBP since they introduced the Touch Bar (I had a 2008 MBP before). I like the Touch Bar when I remember to use it

That is the trick for me - I am not used to it, and I have not regularly used the function keys since the IBM/MS DOS days, so I don't pay a lot of attention to that part of the keyboard.

Krevnik wrote about the base model: “GPU-wise, the base iMac has a noticeably faster GPU still.”

This seems to be the case for me - I use istat menus to check on historical RAM/battery/etc usage and I get a data point whenever my macbook wakes up. The M1 MBA has multiple data points when it's sleeping which suggests it periodically wakes up, but so far this doesn't appear to have affected the battery. (Unlike with my previous intel macbooks where doing this would result in crazy overnight battery drain that I had to turn off the "wake up during sleep" power option, and then change some things in terminal, to stop the battery drain.)
Yeah, I have to admit that this is the first laptop where I am actually getting more mileage than manufacturers' claim or review/benchmark numbers.
Not sure if not had to do with my usage pattern (light but bursty loads like browsing) but I always used to mentally discount 30 % on the number of hours claimed - or as tested by reviewers

It's been 50 hours since the last charge with 14+ hours of usage - and the battery is still at 30%
This is so counter-intuitive that I almost have a feeling that this is too good to last!

As much as we complain about it in the UK, it’s pretty good, albeit very expensive. Everywhere else I’ve visited in the world (European and non-European countries), it has always been cheaper.

I got an M1 Mac Mini (16GB/1TB) and it's absolutely amazing. I was tired of using a MacBook Pro as a desktop replacement, so I got myself one. Not having fans going crazy all the time because of a 4K external display is bliss! And performance is absolutely extraordinary. No issues whatsoever.

I love mine, but the battery definitely doesn’t last all that long when only browsing or YouTube for some reason. I find myself charging it a lot more than I thought I would.

Speed of MacBook Pro M1 is awesome.
But battery life is way below my expectations. Can't run a day without charging it.

The way you set the answers is far too narrow in my mind.
Its more than happy or super disappointed. Nothing in the middle.
For example, I am not delighted (closer to underwhelmed) with my new MBP but pleased enough to keep it.
What should I answer?!

My M1 MBA is the best laptop I've ever owned. I previously had a 2018 MBA, but didn't like the lack of processor horsepower and the relatively dim screen. Gave that one away to a family member and got a late 2019 13" MBP. I'm not a fan of the Touch Bar at all, and I cannot stand having to physically look to adjust the volume each time. This M1 MBA has solved all my issues. The screen is beautiful and bright. The performance is ridiculous, and the battery life is impressive. Couldn't be happier, though I am still looking forward to the redesigned MBP next year.

I'm using iStat Menus to check battery drain, but I can't find the culprit.
How about activity monitor?
The 12 hour power column in the energy tab should hopefully give a reasonable indication of what is draining it

Yep--I used to pay monthly for off-site backups, but now iCloud Drive is my off-site backup and my 500 GB external drive is my local Time Machine backup. Don't need any more than that and I could have a new machine set up in minutes using one or the other.
Question! I’ve ordered the M1 16gb/256gb. I use TM backup and I also run other backup routines to my 2TB QNAP NAS. I’ve run my current Mac Pro setup since 2013, and plan to reinstall or download apps as necessary. I have Parallels running Windows 10, until the M1 can run it without a test mode, shouldn’t I be able to save my VM file(s) and reinstall to Parallels once the app is compatible?

That I don't know--sorry. I have actually never used Parallels.

So far the new architecture has been great. my question is to invest a lot of money into these MacBook or wait for the next gen. meaning, I would just purchase or work to get the cheapest MacBook Air possible while I wait for a true refresh. I am coming from a 15inch MBP so going to a smaller screen does feel weird but at the same time, I do enjoy the portability of the 13inch which felt more "iPad" ish.

I'm delighted with my MBA M1. I'm a retired IT pro and have always had multiple computers at my disposal. This MBA M1 replaced a 27" i7 based iMac and a 2012 MBA. I added a 24" LG UltraFine 4K monitor and a Samsun T7 SSD for backups. Gotta say this has been a delightful setup to work with. I previously was convinced that a desktop machine was absolutely necessary for my needs. But after living with this setup for 3 weeks the performance and lack of clutter on my desk is a dream come true. I'm using the Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse and love it. But whenever I want to work in another room I just grab the MBA M1 and am totally delighted. The performance, the screen, the keyboard ... it all works for me.
