Question and answer from Apple Financial 4th Quarter 2021: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/10/28/apple-4q-2021-earnings/

2:45 pm: Q: On mobile gaming and ‌App Store‌, governments limit game time... how does that affect your business?

A: Governments limiting the time on games? It's very difficult to measure. The policy that you're talking about... there's a policy to restrict kids below a certain age to 1 hour on Fri/Sat/Sun each, it's very difficult to see the impact of it on the ‌App Store‌ at this point.

Interesting as to what the cost benefit for games might be, today, and in the future?

On Apple's financials, Apple managed to sell 365.8 billion for the year, which is 1 billion per day. They lost 6 billion in sales due to supply (Covid) delays. Their cash holdings are $ billion. Enough for a few exclusive games ... but it's not part of their business model it seems.

Apple didn’t give up on gaming…

Apple just can’t do AAA gaming.

They need to employ the right people from across the games industry, who think differently from Apple.

A dedicated AAA gaming division in Apple lead by passionate gamers, designers, leaders is what it will take to get Apple’s platform out of the gutter when it comes to AAA gaming as a platform and actually able to contend as a part of the complete computer experience.

Macs are all work, but no play and that makes them dull.

As exciting as all these M1 stuff in Macs….it‘s not going to compel a massive segment of the Pc market to get Macs to game.

Until there is a culture change (among other things) within the company by people who know AAA gaming…Apple just can’t do AAA gaming.

I mean real gaming. Games like Cyberpunk, borderlands, fall cry 6, final fantasy XIV, world of Warcraft, minecraft… Not these arcade “games”.

It’s great their chips are faster and reduced power usage but compatibility matters. No nvidia discrete graphics card option is a mistake. A lot of software is only compatible with Intel/AMD chips. Software used in businesses where upgrading or finding alternative options that work with M1 isn’t an option.

It looks like Apple is more centered around the Hollywood/movie/music industry and not the business+gaming market which is a huge mistake to be a niche product. It’s also becoming harder and harder for enterprise businesses to manage their Mac fleet.

Is this experience shared or is my assertion mistaken? What has your experience been with these M1 chips in the business sector? Are there real games that work with M1 chips? Maybe I’m ignorant on the topic.

This isn’t my first post but it is. Had to make a new account for some reason.
Apple has done Jack squat in 3 decades to address the issue that Macs are a poor platform for gaming on computers.

Don’t feel bad for criticizing a multi trillion dollar corporation - Apple have the resources to fix this.

We can blame Devs for not optimizing the slim pickings of native games on Macs, but the truth is Apple has not met Devs halfway in support and in some cases have made it less in enticing to make games for Macs .
- dropped support for the popular and widely used OpenGL and Vulkan in favor of Metal.
- When Apple updates Macs it sometimes devs have to update their games to work properly or at all with Macs and devs can‘t update their games indefinitely especially on a platform that takes time and resources to develop for for little returns.

what is worse?

Apple have convinced many Mac gamers this is fine, and they either accept or defend/excuse Apple.

If Mac gamers don’t demand better, Apple doesn’t bother to do better.

Apple like to say they want gaming and its important to Apple, but Apple thinks mobile, cloud and Apple Arcade for children is gaming and tries to sell that to Mac gamers hard instead.
This is is actually insulting when one looks at it.

Apple can‘t do AAA gaming because they don’t have the people to make Macs do AAA gaming.

case in point.

Sony and Microsoft/Xbox where not gaming household names in the beginning, BUT they employed the right people, talents and know how from across the games industry to create their respective gaming brands/platforms….because Sony and Microsoft KNEW they themselves didn’t know gaming.
Apple however in their hubris think they do.

e.g. Seamus Blackley and ED Fries game developers who worked in the games industry were responsible for the creation of the Xbox console, because Microsoft wanted to get in the industry but did not have the credentials to do it and take on Sony‘s PlayStation

SB and ED were the heads and took the lead in the creation of the Xbox and went against the grain of Microsoft corporate thinking, Bill Gates even complained why the console didn’t have Windows the way he wanted it, and needed to be reminded this was not how to appeal to console gamers and beat Sony. So had to relent to those who know more about gaming…the rest is history.

This is the same for Apple, sure Apple may make good video editing software, design efficient chips etc…but Apple does NOT know AAA gaming and can’t do AAA gaming until they employ those who know AAA gaming and change the culture within the company.

A dedicated AAA gaming division within Apple headed and lead by Seamus Blakeys and Ed Fries of the gaming industry who have a passion, understanding and connection to AAA gaming and core gamers is what it will take for Apple to make Macs a gaming platform contender, NOT its current philosophy what it thinks gaming is.
