Based on the marketing material, the 4x improvement in drop shatter resistance also comes from the glass now flush against the stainless steel band.

These are disposable phones folks. No screen protector. No case for last 4 years. I use them how they are designed. When I did use case, they invariably scratched the phone.

But did you actually look on the page?
Tough is great, but we also wanted to make it scratch-resistant. So, using the same dual ion-exchange process we use on the back glass, we protect against nicks, scratches, and everyday wear and tear.

Don‘t tell me you were fooled by that marketing blurb which tells us nothing. We all know there is a trade off between scratch and shatter resistance. We still don’t know what that comprise is.

You would, I wouldn't.

I'll stick to my $10 glass screen protectors that can easily be removed and replaced.
I always put a glass screen protector on my iPhone's, you can get a 3 pack of Icarez for XS with easy install tray for $5 on Amazon, well worth the money, same as AppleCare+.

Unless they significantly improved the Oleophobic coating, I will use a thin screen protector for sure. Once you lose that coating the screen gets so smudgy I can’t stand it. Plus I don’t care how careful I am, the screen always ends up with scratches and I hate looking at that. The screen protectors have gotten so good over the years and I don’t feel like they negatively impact the experience of the screen.

This! I don’t usually add a screen protector because I like the feel of the glass from the iPhone, but I am such a sucker for fingerprint smudges. I just need to keep my screen pristine. Screen protectors are now so good that when installed properly, you can’t tell that there is another layer on the surface. And the oleophobic layers on some of the screen protectors are more superior than the one applied on the phone.

I stopped using screen protectors once I started buying AppleCare. I have only broken one screen but have scratched or chipped the back or sides of several phones in my day. Maybe I'll go case free for a while with the new one and see how it goes. Unfortunately I drop my phone occasionally and it always seems to be in a parking lot with loose gravel on the pavement 🤦‍♂️

You guys are using screen protectors?!?

what cracks me up the most is my relatives who always buy a screen protector only to wear it off and it looks HORRIBLE with scratches (the screen protector) and a lot of bubbles or dust underneath, I am like why???? How does that not bother you when looking at the screen and also ... If it does not bother you, then why even bother with a screen protector. It wouldn't look half as bad after two years if you just used it "bare".

Basically they use a screen protector to protect their iPhone display from scratches but then use said iPhone with a horrible looking screen for 2 years. Only to replace it 2 years later anyway.

I DO use a screen protector because those fine scratches drive me nuts, even though I barely see them. Just knowing, that they are there, drives me nuts but unlike my family, I do get it replaced, once that happens

Why have they not gone to the Sapphire screen they put on the watches yet?

then you would have your “scratch resistance“

Because saphhire glass is more brittle and shatters easily when dropped.
Not much of an issue with small pieces, like the Apple Watch. But gets worse with big screens.

Maybe if you plan on keeping your phone for beyond the 2 year AppleCare+ window then I would. Otherwise I'd go naked.

I do use an Apple case though

I had always avoided Apple cases due to cost. When I got my Xs I decided to give one a shot and was upset I waited so long...So nice. Sadly after about one year the silicone at the bottom of the case started to peel...When I get the 12 I plan to go with the leather option.

Screen protectors look ghastly. Would rather have scratches on the screen than have to view it through a protector.

If you can safely not use a screen protector, I highly recommend it. Same with condoms and sex...safely is the key in both cases ;)

I use Belkins. It's a bit pricey but good quality (also tried Amazon $15 for 3 ones, crappy and bubbles appear after a while). They have good warranty and have replaced my cracked/bubbled protector multiple times in the past two years. The warranty and quality more than justify its price.

The latest iPhone models are known for getting noticeable scratches on the front glass. In the light of Apple's focus being on a "tougher glass", this problem might remain for the iPhone 12 series as well.

For the cost of the phone, a decent case and screen protector is minor: typically 5-10%. They do help to protect it and improve resale value. They also provide peace of mind so you don’t feel like you have to be so careful. I could throw my phone across the room and know that it’ll be fine.

That, and the Ottorbox “Pop” cases make the larger phones much more comfortable to use single-handedly. I love them.

It’s a no brainer if you ask me. I’m not getting a 12, but I’d certainly continue to protect my very expensive iPhones if I did.

Yes, absolutely, unless you work on a road crew, or in a gravel pit.

But I never used them, so.

I'll almost certainly get a screen protector, but will likely forgo a case. I hate scratches on the front glass, but elsewhere it doesn't bother me as much.

There is no leather case this time around except the leather slip, which I wouldn’t really consider it to be a case.

I’ve always found their cases to be good for a year and then it’s time for a new one.

No. Screen protectors could be much more important on the iPhone 12 than on previous iPhone releases. It is very possible that we will see a screen that has tremendous impact resistance but significantly lower scratch resistance.

I've always personally used a glass protector. I don't use a case and I carry the phone in a slip case in a pocket that I do not put anything else in, but it's an added layer of protection should some material harder than the screen make contact (e.g., someone wearing a ring with a gemstone uses the phone and the gemstone grazes over the screen.)

If I’m understanding correctly, this means that since the phone will be more break resistant, it will be less scratch resistant. Is that correct and therefore would need a screen protector more to provide that scratch protection?
