just to throw in my two cents...

g3 ibook - bought used in 04 november, KIA in march 05. it was fun while it lasted. inverter cord went out, then the logic board. wasn't able to be under warranty because previous owner had opened it up

g4 powerbook rev.4 - bought in april 05 and still running smoothly.

moral - dont' buy anything that has had a persistent problem, not necessarily used is bad tho. i don't regret my buy in the first place.

The Power Mac G4 dual 450 from September 2000, no hardware problems at all.

We have an iBook G3 that had to have the HD replaced when upgrading to Jaguar.

My wife's 15" PowerBook has had a lot of hardware problems. The screen, airport, logic board, superdrive twice, and now the hinge.

She still loves her PowerBook though.

I've had my Refurb. Rev. B Dual 2.0 Ghz Powermac for many months, now, and haven't had any trouble with anything ever. I've added an airport card, more RAM and always have a dozen different things plugged into it, but it's yet to so much as cough.
My PC, on the other hand...well, we won't talk about my PC....

iBook G3: Sold to a good home and still working great
PowerMac G5: No complaints here either
PowerBook G4: Battery life could be a bit better, but other than that, it's great
Mac mini: Only 8 hours old, but it has been flawless for those 8 hours

somewhere between here and there.
1. PowerBook G3 Pismo, had a dead pixel, got that replaced. All was well after that.

2. iBook G4 12", perfect as perfect can be. :D

3. iMac G5 20" rev B, perfect as can be. However there is some weird mouse movement that happen at times, it looks like dots on the screen and suddenly goes away. My guess is that it has to do with the firmware from the wireless mouse.
 Will call Apple in regards to that. Nothing serious though.

4. iPod 3G had a defect with the screen, sent it back got to me within a week. Prompt service I liked it. :)

The other Mac and iPod products were gifts, all were in good working condition. :D

You always hear about the problems with peoples macs and such and I know this is because people tend to be very loud about the negatives. So lets get some perspective who has gotten faulty macs strait out of the box.

emac-wireless card not plugged in properly
ibook-perfect

I've had several new macs and never had one DOA: a Mac Classic, Quadra 610, Performa 6400, and two G4's. An iPod also.

I did have a major problem with the 610 one time, it would reset itself after 30 minutes of on time, and then reset itself sooner and sooner until it was cooled off for a few hours. We took it in to get it fixed and they couldn't replicate the problem. Turns out it was the wiring to an outlet in the living room...moved it back in the office and it worked fine again.

That's the worst problem I ever had though.

revision A 1.8 g5 tower - not a problem, only one OS crash in the last 2 1/2 years... survived being loose in my trunk during a hurricane escape attempt.

3g ipod 20gig, battery aint so hot... but I never use it outside of the Altec Lansing speakerthingy, which powers it when in use. During the last hurricane, I had to run out to use the car charger every other cd length mix... but still better than silence.

I have only ever had one flat-out-faulty out-of-box Mac: I bought a PowerMac 8500 back when they were the hot thing, but after MONTHS of waiting (man, Apple's supply chain was broken in those days) it had a stone-dead printer port. University repair department was so incompetent I ended up returning it and getting a boring-but-quick-shipping 6500 instead.

The only other issue I've had was a G4 iMac 17" on which the HD died after a week. Quick Applecare turnaround and good as new.

This is in comparison to at least 27 perfectly functional brand-new Macs I've set up in the same period. All of those are still running, and the only problems have been dead hard drives (after a reasonable period of use) and a couple failed optical drives.

I got that beat,

My powerbook 6 trips to texas
weeks of total downtime, no replacement.
Repairs-Logic Board, screen, latch, harddrive failed, power audio card replaced, top casing, bottom casing, some thigns inside never identified,

Finally after they tried to schedule a 7th repair,

Replacement!

Ima miss this powerbook tho, so much sentimental value,

Getting repalced with the neww 1.67 (75%) otherwise still improved 1.5ghz

Three other ibooks 2x12 +14 are great

1 dell laptop-no problems
1 dell desktop-casing fallin apart
