So your advice is to barely use and barely touch the hardware you have. Well yeah, that would increase its lifespan, no question. It'll all still break though. Everything does, no matter how well you keep it. It also sounds like you've traditionally gotten rid of things before they've had the chance to.

And gotten lucky. SSDs fail, not as often as hard drives, but they do fail. This is not an issue of maintenance. It never was.

Moreover, when SSDs fail, unlike with HDDs, there will be no warning, and emergency retrieval of data may be completely impossible.

This is such a naive statement.

Why? I have as good argument the fact that I have never had a Mac hardware failing on me in the last 11 years. Two 2010 MBPs, a 2014 MBA, 2011 Mac Mini, 2009 iMac 24”, 2018 MBP 15”... they all went through my home and left/were sold without any failure during this period. Not to mention the two iMacs at work (2010 and 2011) and the 2015 MBP 15”. I fully believe that I can make that statement because my previous experience speaks for itself.

Has a “Target Display Mode” ever been a thing for external Macs with monitors?
Yep. The 2009/2010 27" and all 2011-15 (?) iMacs had that. It was killed with the Retina iMacs.

Because everything can fail and sometimes will irrespective of good maintenance. The fact that something hasn't failed yet doesn't mean it will never fail.

Just think of the GPU issues that plagued several Macs. They had defective GPUs that would fail no matter what.

Does the fact someone hasn't died yet imply they'll never die? ;)

Comparing a human with a Mac computer is not a fair comparison for me.

If the Mac I’m using fails, it will certainly not happen in my hands. I am not saying that they are infallible. I am saying that I have never had one that failed on me so far, because I take good care of them. I am not saying no one does. I said I do. And certainly others do (take care of them).

I have a long 11 yr run without failures and I will do whatever I can to keep that run going strong. So far I am having success and this gives me confidence to say that (hopefully) no Mac will fail on me. Maybe I am just lucky? Who knows.

Bright colors are often popular in times of optimism or hope. After 2020 I’d expect to see bright colors in everything from tech to fashion to home design.

I still remember a particular conversation I shared on a grey late afternoon in October 2001, with a work colleague about the state of industrial design becoming a lot less “organic and playful” as a reaction to what had gone down the month previous. Their background was as an account manager, and they were asking my professional best-guess for what the future of design might change.

I paused, then said they should probably expect either muted colours or the absence of colours entirely in product design, coupled with harder, stronger lines, and a complete end to things like the grape iMac G3 (on their desk) for a very time to come.

That's more like it. My point was just sometimes, failures happen despite our best efforts to prevent them. Thus we can never be 100% certain that they won't happen. :) Anyway, with (hopefully) no hurt feelings: back on topic!

That pink iMac needs to come with PonyOS preinstalled!

Here's my 2007 MBP on Tiger using my 2010 27" iMac as a monitor (including dual-link DVI to Displayport conversion).

the PonyOS page is hilarious thanks. We need a PonyOS PPC for the LOLs...
"What are people saying about PonyOS?"...

Anyway, surely in 2070 there will be some collectors happy to have one of each color new M1 iMacs, and showing it here.
Wonder what will be the failing points on these after 20 years ...Surely not caps or brittle plastics ;)

The external PSU perhaps.
This. And it will be a real PITA to disassemble for fixing, sorry for 2070's collectors...
Placing the ethernet port there is quite smart though. But hope the integration is well done, with all the heat a PSU can produce. Remember the first Airport Express Stations ? I think mine lasted less than a year before grilling hitself.
When I oppened it (and was not easy) , one could see what sh...y design it was.

The irony in this post is off the charts.
You're signature is off the charts. Best thing I've read all year. I have this exact argument all the time with my clients. Many people really don't believe viruses exist, its all a scam so I can make money vaccinating their dog against Rabies. I point out that 60,000 people a year still die from Rabies in India and their reply is "I don't live in India..if I did, I guess I would vaccinate my dog." I point out that the reason we don't have Rabies (in dogs, still have lots of Rabies in wildlife, have you seen the rabid Bobcat attack video that went ummm...wait for the irony.....viral from the other day?) in the US anymore is because we require by law that you to vaccinate your dog against Rabies. Blank stare.

Studies suggest 75% of the American people are scientifically illiterate. I'd say from personal experience its closer to 95%.

The new one is literally a MacBook with a touchscreen sans macOS.
Kind of a big deal.

Actually, it's also sans an unlockable bootloader, which means you also can't use any other operating system either, like Asahi Linux. Stuck with iPadOS forever.

Anyone remember the feMac?

Oh yes, Macs have always been common on "The Simpsons," and not just the Mapple stuff. In the late 90s and early 2000s they could be seen using iMac G3s...

...and for quite a while, Lisa's had a flat-panel iMac desktop in her bedroom (a MyMac, maybe?)

And Springfield Elementary School was shown to still be using iMac G3s and (M)Apple Lisa computers (get it?)... in 2012, no less!

Moe Syzlak is shown to still use an original Bondi Blue iMac G3 in the infamous Lady Gaga episode...

And one of my favorite Apple references here, in "Yellow Subterfuge" Bart uses Pro Movie, an obvious Final Cut Pro parody, on what otherwise appears to be a generic laptop...

Of course, the show's production team has been really Mac-oriented for a long time, using them for a good part of the show's production process, so it makes sense they'd do this. (I know "The Simpsons Movie" was even edited and rendered on Final Cut Pro, but I'm not sure if the recent seasons are; wouldn't surprise me if they are edited on FCP X.)

Yeah, You are just lucky!
But why on heaven you are suspended?

Hi was suspended for lying regarding Browservice plus he was very unfriendly to me when I tried to reach out to him for assistance in how to get Browservice going. I managed to get Browservice to work and now OS 9 allows me to view any website.. but he also lied about a few things.
