It *could* turn out to be the Touch Bar misstep in the future. My friend loves her Touch Bar Mac though. Going back a bit further I loved using 3D Touch on my 8+, and I miss it every day; but I’m in the minority.
I also like touchbar in my mac, sadly his time comes to an end, I will upgrade in January.
Personaly I prefer haptic touch than 3D Touch. Never liked using force to touch screen stronger, but everyone has his own preferences

Yeah it is, but it’s also nice to have. Personally, I set up my always on display to only activate if it’s charging. Sooooo while driving long distance, especially if I know the route already and just want ETA/traffic info, I’ll use my display like this, Dynamic Island still shows once maps goes into always on mode that way music info is still glancable. Just wish other apps worked with Dynamic Island like this even after you press the lock button

It doesn’t occupy extra space compared to the notch, and it’s genuinely practical.
It may not take up more space than the notch, but it takes up more useable space.

Also, it diminishes the speaker output. Apparently fitting the speaker in the dynamic island space leads to a quieter volume than what was achievable on previous phones. (At least on the non-pro models.)

Dynamic Island basically beautifies the notch, period. Outside of glancing at certain background activities thats happening, I don’t know what else you can accomplish. Are those extra bits nice? Yes, all nice to have. But does any cannot live without? Doubtful. 🤨

Unless Apple somehow figures out how to build under-screen front facing camera and Face ID modules, I don’t see much change in terms of how the notch looks like and how useful it becomes.

I'm noticing that other than some basic OS features, there are very few apps that utilize the dynamic island. I was kinda excited for it when upgrading to the 15pm. I feel as though Apple should have integrated the whole notification system into it. That was the impression I got when I saw the 14 pro launch. How hard is it to let notifications pop out of the dynamic island? Just seems like a gimmick and uses up even more space than the notch.

I find it very useful - to jump back into music/podcast players, navigation, to view my timers, to see my food delivery status, etc.

And it looks cool.

Touch Bar took something away (physical buttons) - I don’t think people would mind it that much if it was just an addition. Dynamic Island is not taking any functionality away and it adds a cute fun element to UI so it is generally loved by people (not counting the sophisticated critics here)

Btw, a lot of people liked 3D Touch, me included. It was awesome.

And you've just realized this?

I don’t have it but here are my thoughts.

It’s essentially like a permanent smart multitasking widget, right? Not quite a split screen app, but just some basic info/functionality based on what you’re doing and a shortcut to the actual app. Pretty sure I would like that functionality sometimes like if I’m tracking an Uber moment by moment while also reading an article. But definitely not all the time. Many times I would want no distractions (I actually usually disable all banner notifications because I hate being visually interrupted especially when the banner appears just as I’m tapping something under it so it takes me to another app instead), and I want as full of a screen as possible. During those the times I would like the DI to be relocated to the top of the pull down Notification Center, which already has a media player widget there, but the DI seems to be able to do more (or at least potentially).

Basically it’s a nice little multitasking tool, but I want the option to be able to move it off screen while keeping it accessible.

It takes screen space in a very intrusive way for little value.

Compared to the notch? It takes a very similar amount of space to the iPhone 13 Pro. And perceptually it feels even smaller. Compared to my old iPhone 12 Pro Max, it is definitely an improvement size-wise.

Until Apple figures out how to do Face ID without a cutout, a part of the screen will be missing, and Dynamic Island is the best iteration of that. So it’s not taking away anything that wouldn’t be taken out anyway.

You are absolutely right.

But ever since they first unveiled it, I assumed neither Apple nor 3rd party app devs would ever fully utilize it as its impending obsolescence has been pretty much been a done deal before it even launched.

I don't expect it to get replaced for iPhones 16. My best guess is 2025 or 2026 iPhones.

But no matter how much they end up doing with it, or how small they can make the cutout appear, the Dynamic Island is still primarily a clever but gimmicky way to distract the user from the fact that under-display Face ID and front-facing camera(s) are not yet feasible.

It’s just a different style notch, I was surprised at all of the hype last year and now that I have an iPhone 15 pro it’s as meh as I originally thought it was

I’m also surprised how much hype it got. It’s essentially a more developed status bar designed in a way to disguise a camera. That’s it.

It doesn’t have notifications popping out of it because that’s a separate area of the OS. The DI is for activities which are currently happening, such as music playback or a timer. And unlike previously where you might get a little symbol on the status bar to indicate this you’re also able to long press and get some controls.

It’s nifty sometimes but there’s no reason why it has to be restricted to new iPhones with a pill other than for marketing reasons. And it’s very easy to live without.

Reading this, I get some Touch Bar vibes.
Didn’t understand the hype last year. Seems like a half-baked idea trying to sell us another not-so-innovative innovation.
Curious about it, tho.

I got my iPhone 15 Plus (upgrading from a 12 Pro Max with Notch) and I was also a bit "shocked", how little it can actually do. I thought the Dynamic Island would replace the pop up of any notification in the middle of the screen and would minimise it to the island but this is only true for some things like the timer or music controls. For instance, I thought I could watch a movie, receive a message and it would move to the Dynamic Island with a tiny icon of the contact and pressing on it, would let me display the message at the top of the screen but nope.

Lame

You could say this about literally any feature of any Apple product. “So … the USB-C port is basically pointless;” “So … the ultrawide camera is basically pointless;” “So … the keyboard is basically pointless.” What is “pointless” to one person might be useful to another. The Dynamic Island isn’t the most awe-inspiring feature, but it exists, and it’s not hurting anything. Calm down.

I do find the notch/island thing more annoying than anything. Having to turn my music off to take a screenshot just so the screenshot doesn’t show it is very frustrating. I would have preferred an on/off switch for Desert Island or whatever it’s called.

Also, what’s with the side button full screen background thing on setting?? I thought simplicity was Apples thing? Everything is the standard white background/tap on what you want and move on but for some unknown reason they’ve gone a bit OTT for selecting what the side button should do.

The Dynamic Island was just another attempt to hide the huge camera hole on the screen... in a sophisticated way... this will be proven when we finally have everything under the display and this feature disappears...

On the other side you got to hand it to Apple that something that was just a cover up for hardware limitations is now being copied by other companies...

If you have an apple watch, ALL of the functions of the dynamic island are completely irrelevant. I've had my 15 Pro since launch (I upgraded from an 8) and I've never actually seen the dynamic island 'do' anything. I'm not sure what it's actually supposed to do, especially if you've got a watch.
