Having used the Dynamic Island for about two weeks, I quite like it. Its animations are pretty and it is more useful than a totally static notch, IMO. Also Apple and 3rd party devs can continue enriching the DI functionality, as it has quite a bit of potential.

If Apple could lift it further up the screen (to where the notches are), it would be even cooler.

Yea I forgot staring at a permanent black pill at the top of a screen makes it less boring.
No one "permanently" staring at it so you're quite wrong there but seem to me you prefer to permanently staring at wallpaper color there?

You are right, I love to pretend is not there while watching full screen vids. It entertains me.

It is not a permanent black pill, as it can grow, expand and split, depending on what’s going on.
Still cannot split the physical cutout. It is not a permanent black pill yes, but what Apple has is not too far from that.

Doesn't bother me one bit considers I got much more functions out of it, like knowing what is this lovely song from the playlist, knowing how much timer I have left by just a glance, who's ahead in the match and what's the score etc. etc.

This is my point, the notch is just there, all static and boring.
And it'll always be there even if they put the whole of it under the screen. You'll still see it through the screen and complain about that.

In actual use, I think the value of the Dynamic Island is somewhere between Apple’s “it’s revolutionary” marketing hype and the “it’s pointless” take espoused by some in this thread. There are some instances where it is genuinely a really useful innovation. I was at the airport yesterday getting ready to fly home from a work trip and using Flighty. In the Dynamic Island at all times was my gate and how long I had until my flight left. Really helpful. And a long press showed me all my flight details. That is a great use of the Dynamic Island.

Uber’s implementation is similarly useful. Another Dynamic Island feature I really find valuable is the real time waveform shown when on a phone call. It’s really useful to get a visual indication when each person is speaking. I don’t know why this isn’t also shown on the main call screen.

Useful but less revolutionary are things like music controls. It’s nice to see the album cover and waveform for what’s playing. But iOS already offers SO MANY other ways to quickly control music (control center, Notification Center/Lock Screen, Home Screen widgets), that having something in the status bar doesn’t add a huge quality of life boost. Same is true for timers.

Ultimately, the Dynamic Island is a bit like the Touch Bar in that it relies on third party developers to make it genuinely useful. Apple is avoiding the mistakes of the Touch Bar by getting the Dynamic Island on as many devices as possible, as quickly as possible. But I was disappointed Apple didn’t make more 1st party use of the Dynamic Island in iOS 17. Will the Dynamic Island catch on long term? Time will tell I guess.

I like it. After 7 years of upgrading yearly, I skipped the 14 PM and got the 15 PM 1week ago. I particularly like that you can hold in it for a second and the music player controls pop out, or if you tap it, it takes you to music, maps, phone call, etc.

I like how it’s a command central and dynamic controller for everything.

You are right about third party support, it’s pretty lacking so far in my experience.

As with so many features that Apple adds, their success or failure depends on their adoption by third party developers - and the track record isn't great.
This. It's the Touch Bar of the iPhone line. I rather like both features, but still recognize they could be even better if more devs used them. I do have several apps I use regularly that take full advantage of the Dynamic Island, and it's very useful when properly utilized!

For me, I like Dynamic Island. It’s definitely useful, especially when it comes to map directions and using it to change tracks when listening to music or skip ahead of ads in a podcast. My favorite is apps that support Live Activities for sports, that is when I find the most use out of DI. I do wish that more third party apps would utilize it though.

Agree it can be useful, but does it actually need a big cutout to present a notification at the top of the screen? I feel that functionality could exist regardless.

Like someone else mentioned, it seems to me a lot like the Touch Bar on the 13" Pro. Really limited functionality and a battery drainer. Seems mostly gimmicky. Maybe as more 3rd parties adopt it I'll find it more useful but we're going on over a year now.
The first year it was only on the Pro, so a lot of app developers probably did not feel the need, but now that its on all 15's maybe they will implement more to it.

I find it useful. I like that it essentially becomes a now playing function. I can jump quickly into it when I'm scrolling through safari to change a song or if I'm looking to get back into it from YouTube videos.
This. I like the UI integration so, far, especially what is playing. But I also think they could totally integrate even more, as others have pointed out, notifications would be fantastic.

i like it. they could've just changed the notch design and not bothered with a dynamic island but i'm glad they added some software stuff to it. it's much easier to tap it to access my music or access phone controls when having to use my phone when on a call.

i'm someone who longs for the day we get an iphone with absolutely no kind of sensors visible on the screen so basically under display face id/camera but i think i would miss the dynamic island now.

Before the Apollo App got shut down it was fun having the pixel pal on there.
pixel pals is a seperate app you can buy now i think....if you really care about it.

This was the general consensus a few weeks after the iPhone 14 Pro launch. The marketing was on point, thought it was amazing new feature set but turns out it was overhyped.
