I have been using Whatsapp and to be honest I'm not sure I like iMessage that much.

I dunno, maybe I just need to get used to using something new?

What are your thoughts?

Considering basically everyone I text has an iPhone, and I bugged them to update today, I'm enjoying iMessage!

Everyone's needs vary, so Apple decided to loosely copy RIMS exclusive style messaging system as implemented in their BlackBerry. It's one more thing for Apple to rave about. It does have usefulness if both parties own iOS devices. That's the benefit for Apple is one more reason to give people to buy Apple devices.

It's a nice welcome addition IMO. It's baked into the OS seamlessly and I can see many people making good use of it. If people hate it that much it can be disabled.

I like it, but it annoys the hell out of me that I can't associate my phone number for my iPhone with my iPad, or say "if sent to phone number, also send to apple id"...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

Definitely not as functional as WhatsApp yet.

Nice feature of iMessage is that it blends SMS with data messaging. So iPhones users and non are in one app.

But I like the whatsapp new message sound better. Less harsh.

- I like that you can change the ringtone and not limited to the 7 in Whatsapp.
- When you go on Whatsapp even if you don't open any chats, it says all of them are read, unlike iMessage which only says it's read when you open that specific chat.
- One thing about Whatsapp that's better is the way it hides the keyboard by tapping the chat. On iMessage you have to flick the keyboard down and you also scroll up in the chat if you do that so it starts getting annoying having to flick the keyboard down then scroll down

Everyone i know has either an Android phone, or a Jailbroken iOS device on an old firmware and refuses to update. So for me iMessage is like FaceTime the sequel; An icon that wont be touched on my homescreen, unfortunately.

I'm loving it so far but sometimes it fails to change "delivered" to "read". Sometimes it changes, other times it doesn't. I know the person has "read" it because I've had a reply. Anyone else seeing this?

The person has to allow others to see that they've read it. I think it's off by default so you have to go turn it on in Settings> Messages> Send Read Receipts

It's ok. Not great.

I'd like it to tell me who in my contact book has iMessage. How else can I know (other than physically seeing them with one)? So, I have to try iMessage...then realise after an hour it hasn't been delivered, then go back and try SMS?

I'd like to see it cross-reference and mark who has iMessage available.

I could obviously be doing something wrong. Do I literally have to try numbers and emails to see if it works? I have also tried messaging a mobile number of somebody I know has it installed (I can talk to them in iMessage with their email address) but it does not work.

You open a new text and add someones number. Wait a few seconds and the grey "Text Message" where you type will switch to "iMessage" and the green send button will change to a blue send button if they have iMessage

Edit: The contacts name in the "To" field will also change from green to blue for iMessage

I love it. However, I'd highly recommannd for those of you who has an iPhone and iPad, please use your Apple ID email instead of your phone no. Because you have to use your Apple ID on your iPad, so can't Sync the messages bettween two devices. :)

Nope. Doesn't work.

I can speak with John via iMessage to his email address.

He has his mobile number and email address in the settings\messages\receive at section

If I open messages and add his mobile number, it stays green.

Not sure if you've actually used it yet - doesn't sound like you have?

Once you activate it in settings, there's then nothing you have to do. start a text message as you did before in the same messages.app on your phone - there's no separate iMessages app. If the recipient has iMessage enabled it will get sent as one, if they don't it will get sent as sms. nothing you need to do/search/choose.

Good tip.

Hopefully Apple will eventually allow the two to resolve to each other by permitting the assigning of a number to the Apple ID. Although mucho confusion will reign when people mistype their mobile number - Apple will probably have to figure out a way to verify:)

EDIT:

Nevermind what I wrote before.. what you describe SHOULD result in a blue "Send" button and your message being sent as an iMessage. Strange that it doesn't do so.

Now, admittedly I've only tried this on an iPad 2, but if you type in John's name do you get a drop-down menu of his available contact information - email, phone, etc? If you do, which ones have a blue chat bubble next to them? That indicates a verified iMessage target.

I have a query about the iMessage app. Firstly Apple WTF took you soo long to get this into your damn phone....lol

OK main question is this...Does iMessage cut into your data allowance ?

Here is my thinking on this, my understanding of Blackberry contracts (here in the UK anyway) and generally all smartphone contracts now, is that you get your talk mins, texts, x amount of data and with blackberry the BBM. Now say for example you have 500mb each month on your Blackberry once that runs out you can not use the internet or other apps that use the data connection. Well not without incurring further data charges by your network provider. However you can still use the BBM system as that does not take from your data package. Please correct me if I am wrong.

So is this the same for iMessage, because I have not seen anywhere to state that it is separate from your data allowance. Now with my contract being moved from unlimited data to 500mb per month, if iMessage cuts into this data allowance...well then that is a bit of a piss poor show by Apple and does not really compete with BBM (even though BBM has been a bit poor the last few days)

iMessage uses your available data connection. If it's cellular, you're billed by your operator as if you were accessing the internet via a web browser or whatnot. If you're on a WiFi network, iMessages are sent through that instead, not using up your cellular data allowance.
