I just discovered that outgoing text via iMessage are NOT free when texting other phone platforms, as I was told in this thread. Who you text must be an iOS device with iMessage for your outgoing text (and incoming), to be free.

So at this point I don't have much use for iMessage, because most of my friends don't have iPhones. It's back to using the TextFree App for me.

I would rather see a sort of pin or something... I got friends with iphones and they never use the email feature on it. They won't even signup for mobileme (icloud) even know that's it's free!! With pins they wouldn't need to signup for anything, but rather just giving the pin away like bb's... So imessage is cool and all but i think lots of iphone users won't even bother using it! Txt plans are cheap these days and it's unlimited, but i can see ipod touch users all over this one !!

Instead of pins why not just less lazy friends... Do your friends not have ANY email address at all that they can just toss on there? It is not exactly hard to do.

If you got an iPhone and don't even put your email on it you might as well own an android phone no?

LOL who told you that.

That, obviously is not true. If you send a text message it is a text message. Nothing about imessage changes that. imessage is simply a new system to send messages between iOS devices. If both devices have iOS 5.0 and things properly configured an imessage will be sent instead of a text.

Otherwise, a text is sent. This goes for any outgoing messages to any non iOS 5 devices. I will have to go back and check but if someone said that they were wrong.

Nope. Doesn't work.

I can speak with John via iMessage to his email address.

He has his mobile number and email address in the settings\messages\receive at section

If I open messages and add his mobile number, it stays green.

Do you have his mobile number in the same contact as with his email?

I had issues with it yesterday and today. My friends sent messages and they took hours to get to me, and were resent as texts a few minutes to a few hrs later.

My cousin sent me 4 imessages at 8pm EST 5.5 hrs ago, we both have wifi on, sitting near modem/router, full bars, he has verizon and i have att and i have yet to receive the messages, however when sending texts, instant and no issues...

it seems buggy because it doesn't detect all the people I sent messages to who had iOS5 who had it, it was sending texts to people who had iOS5 and was trying to send imessages to those who did not...this only started happening in last 24 hrs, initially it worked fantastic...but i just turned it off, i have unlimited texts on this family plan so I am going to use it, will turn it on if I need to contact my friends on iPads, otherwise texts work fine for now til the kinks get worked out

I don't use it at all.

Me either. All my friends who I text and/or message have non iOS devices such as Blackberries and Samsung Galaxies. Too bad iMessage isn't multi-platform, as if so it would be much more useful to me.

Also, can someone explain to me what "WhatsApp" is? I've searced through the iTunes App store and can not find anything with such a name. Does my device have to be jailbroken to use it or something?

I should have been more clear. When you said platform I thought you were referring to different iOS devices such as iPad, Touch, and iPhone. As I said though, they will only show up in blue if the text is going out over iMessage as a free message.

I'm really enjoying it as well as my fiance. We both always went through the whole process of if one of us asked a question and didn't get a response soon we both ended up putting "??" or "??????" the longer we didn't get a response.

Now we can at least see if each other hasn't even read the message yet which is GREAT.

I like it so far. Allowed me to cancel my insanely overpriced $30 family texting plan.

I like it, but it annoys the hell out of me that I can't associate my phone number for my iPhone with my iPad, or say "if sent to phone number, also send to apple id"...

You can!
Just change the "Receive At" on your iPHone to your Apple ID and it will send imessages to both your iPhone AND iPad.
If you have "receive at" and your phone nymber checked, it will only receive at what you just told it...YOUR PHONE! Tell it to send to Apple ID and it will send to both your ipad and iPHone. DUH!

imessage problem?

I updated to the i0S5 on my iphone4, and like the features so far, but am having a problem with the imessage. I don't know if it's me, or a setting I need to fix. Ive sent text messages to two people that were in my existing contacts, and it must have recognized them as iOS5 users as it turned blue and sent it as a imessge, BUT it removed their contact name and now the message thread shows their phone number instead of their name, but they ARE a contact. How do I fix/correct?

Thanks!

I think it's awesome. I have a lot of friends who have iOS 5 on their iPhones, so communicating with them is incredibly fast and convenient. It's like having a chat function wherever you go, you just can't be offline (if you don't turn off 3G or WiFi).

I shake my head at these comments as all iMessage is is SMS with benefits. By saying you "won't use it" implies you won't even send a normal text again.

How about those who "won't use it" just think of it as the old "Messages" app and move on. You don't really need to think of it as anything else if you don't want to. But to say you won't ever use it? I don't get that, unless you never send any SMS messages.

BUT... the sender needs to send you an iMessage to your Apple/iCloud ID to receive it on both your iPhone and your iPad. If he sends it to your phone number it'll still only show up on your phone - regardless of whether or not it was sent via iMessage on his end.

At least it's that way in my brief experience.

I agree that this part of iMessage is a nice feature.

However I have to still use a free texting app like TextFree, if I want to text friends for free that use cell phones other than the iPhone.

I just can't for the life of me understand why anyone would use something as ugly as WhatsApp. The worst looking messaging app in the App Store. I remember when WhatsApp was still a new kid on the block, the dev would listen to your ideas/suggestions concerning the UI. Now that it's the most popular messaging app, the dev has become arrogant and couldn't care less what anyone says about the UI.

Have a look at Textie (by the dev who designed the original Tweetie, now the official Twitter app), Verbs, even Kik Messenger, all these apps are well polished, organized, have beautiful, up-to-Apple-standard UI elements. It's a pleasure to use them in other words.

On topic: I always try to use Apple's native apps as much as I can, whenever I can. Their implementation of iMessage couldn't be any better, makes the most sense, no setup or installation is required whatsoever, it works straight out of the box. Plus, it's by Apple themselves. You just can't say no to it. I've dumped every other third-party messaging app in favor of iMessage. For me, the fewer the apps, the better. And honestly, no one will ever be able to beat iMessage. It's Apple, what else can I say.

Ok this kinda makes sense because when my husband and I did the update we shared a icloud account and were would each get eachothers text messages on both his phone and my phone. Is this because we had a shared I cloud account??
