I'm still debating whether to get it on mac/pc. I already have the 360 version (because the person who I want to play co-op with has it on 360) but I'm debating whether to also buy the mac/pc version so I can play with a bunch of my other friends.

Might just wait for it to go on sale..

We'll see I guess :D

Anyone got P2 who didn't play the original? After hearing all the fuss, I downloaded Steam and played Portal: The First Slice for free thanks to my (crappy) NVIDIA GeForce 9400m! Really enjoyed it even if the fps dropped to 10-15 even with portal rendering set to 0... New MBP arriving next week and I think I may pick a copy of Portal 2 up.

PS Is it true that if you buy the PS3 version you get it for free on Steam for Mac/PC, too? Because I have a PS3 as well...

Yes.

You should still play Portal 1 at some point, it's just as good and there are some mechanics in the game that aren't present in Portal 2. Plus, it's more challenging (IMO, your mileage may vary.)

Thanks. Will get P2 and will then think about P1. Don't like too challenging games, have only ever completed one game 100% and that was Lego Indiana Jones :p

Pre-Ordered and have been taking my time and enjoying it. I agree that the puzzles may not be quite as challenging as the first, but it's polished, interesting and truly worth the money. Smooth as butter on my MP.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you just buy the PS3 version of the game and then use the voucher inside and activate your mac/pc copy...THEN trade the PS3 version back in for credit (without the voucher). Essentially making the pc/mac copy almost free, and giving you some money to use on something else? If you plan on playing on mac anyway.....I mean right?

Yes you could, but I imagine a game store will give you less credit for the PS3 copy without the voucher, so it may not work out so well.

Yeah you could. You need a PS3 though also. The PC/Mac code is different than a normal retail copy code in which it needs to detect that your steam account has been attached to a PSN ID from a PS3. So if you have a PS3, then sure you could do this. I expect the PS3 version's trade in value to be significantly lower than the xbox 360. Probably not yet, but this question has popped up a lot and seeing how many vouchers are on eBay right now, I expect the same vice versa. I thought about doing this, but it came out easier to just drop $40 on a two-pack pre-order and call it good. Gives Valve all the profits rather than any lost money toward licensing fees or EA, their publisher.

We need more original games like this. If I had my way, I would ban all game developers from making FPSs for 5 years. Force them to get creative for once!

It runs/looks better than I expected on the baseline MBP 15 using the 6490m on medium-high settings (system does heat up quickly though)...only played it a short bit yesterday but it's terrific and typically hilarious...glad I opted for the Mac version over the 360 version...

Anyone care to comment on the Co-op mode?

Finally got it today, playing on my early '08 MacBook Pro (8600m GT). Runs really smooth on native res with vsync, medium-high. Not too far in, maybe 45 minutes so far but have to work tonight. Looking to power through it tomorrow night though.

Not sure what it is with Valve games but first Half-Life 2 now Portal 2 make me nauseated after a while. HL2 made me feel terrible to the point where I quit playing it altogether. Going to have to break up my play time in P2 - I really want to beat it.

I posted this answer somewhere but can't find it, so I'll repeat myself here. I briefly played the orig Portal when it came bundled with one of the Half Life 2 Episodes. I only got through a few rooms and said "boring". And compared to HL2 it was. But now with all the P2 hype, I decided to go back and finish it. It turned out to be a good puzzler, with humor and threat and the end of the "testing" process was brilliant and hilarious (at least to me). I love the voice and it's comments. Most important is that in the past with most games with built in puzzles, I either don't have the intelligence or the patience to figure out puzzles based on odd obscure relationships. In contrast in this game, every setup seemed to be logical and straight forward as long as the physics does not blow your mind and under the circumstances, my analytical thinking was able to prevail. :) I impressed myself by being able to complete Portal (original) without referring to one online cheat/walk through. In some cases the answer can be illusive, but eventually will be found. Jumping/flying solutions were the most dynamic and fun especially when you have to spoiler> shoot new portals while flying to fly through <end spoiler. Fortunately you don't splat when falling from high places. :) If you have not played it, here is one easy cheat/example, so easy I spent 30 min trying to figure it out:

spoiler> There is a duct you climb into with a spinning fan, that you can stand on, the only way is down, but when you point your portal gun through the fan it does not show as able to project a portal to the other side. However if you stand back from the fan and look through it at an angle you can shoot a portal though it. Shooting energy orbs through portals to solve puzzles becomes very prevalent later in the game. <end spoiler.

My wife likes puzzle games, but not ones that require physicality, moving/fast reactions, therefore she would not like this game.

Question: I noticed when playing this game (original Portal) on my MBP that every 5 or so minutes the game would freeze for about 20 sec and then resume. Is this a known issue?

I think I'm going to wait for half-life epsiode 3 and some sort of portal2 bundle.
plus I'll be too busy to play it now any ways :(.

That's how I got it the first time and this sounds like a good idea. I really don't care to spend $40-60 on this type of game unless I find it on sale somewhere.

Co-op is brilliant.
Up to chapter 5 with a friend, and we just keep messing around and having a laugh to the point of tears. It's a bit short though... 3 hours in and we've almost finished all the co-op campaigns. That and there's zero replayability.

But it's still so good.
(runs like a total dream on the 6790 under Windows. Everything that could be on max is on max)

I'd guess that these were just when you hit the loading zones. In Portal 2 they replaced this by a splash screen with a progress bar.

Since Portal 2 came out there have been rolling sales from various vendors competing for customers. It's a popular enough game that it has apparently become a loss leader for a lot of vendors. I bought my copy for $30 at Best Buy during a sale.

Regarding the orig Portal, my example was different than a zone load, where the game put up a little message about the zone loading. This was a complete lockup for about 20-30 sec on a regular basis. I'll have to check what local retailers are selling P2 for. Thanks!

I was in Best Buy yesterday. Portal 2 was not marked as on sale, but it was, priced at the register for $30 so I got it. :)

Ok, so when a retailer has a game Mac/PC- $50, Xbox/PS- $60, how much do you think the retailer actually paid for this- anyone know?
