try setting any stacks on your dock to display as folders instead - it fixed the UI lag on integrated graphics on me

Choppy Animations since ML Upgrade

I have two main graphics-related bugs since upgrading to Mountain Lion. I have since submitted them to Apple using the Mountain Lion feedback form. Even though the problem is frustrating, it's comforting to see I'm not the only one experiencing it. I've attached my NovaBench score...there should be no reason for any kind of choppiness on this system. Below are my two bug reports and NovaBench score.

--
Bug Submission #1
New Calendar app (Version 6.0 (1639)) has very choppy graphics when using the page curl effect. This was an upgrade installation of Mountain Lion from a fully updated 10.7.4 installation. So far, I have done permissions repair on the hard drive, removed/added iCloud calendars, and removed all Calendar caches and preferences in ~/Library/Calendars. Even with no calendars syncing, the Calendar app flips through months very choppy. Every other system animation is very smooth as it should be. I can confirm that this same animation was very smooth in 10.7.4.

Bug Submission #2
When taking a selection screenshot using Command+Shift+4, the crosshair appears to blink for every pixel it hovers over making it look like it is rapidly strobing. I am running 10.8 with all software updates. This system was upgraded from a fully updated installation of 10.7.4 and I can confirm this issue did not exist in Lion.

Really looking forward to a solution!

::ALSO::

I forgot to add the errors that appear in Console (system.log) when flipping through months in Calendar.app in Mountain Lion. Unsure why the errors are present, but the same clip of text shows for each flip of the month. I am using iCloud Calendars exclusively and have already removed/added as noted in my bug report. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Something I did fixed the issue!!!

I had the choppy graphics issue. I did not want to go down the route of re-installing the OS and everything. I did defragment and fixed the file permissions - didn't help. I uninstalled applications - didn't help. I cleaned the system using "CleanMyMac" latest version - didn't help. So, I decided to live with it and I tried installing my software back. In the process, the choppy graphics issue got fixed. Here are the last few steps that fixed it - not sure which one it is.

a) I installed AutoCAD 2011 and was playing around with some 3D graphics. Not sure whether this reset the graphics card settings.
b) Sometimes you have applications sitting inside folders in the Applications folder, I moved them all out to the root Application folder (for the purpose of organizing). I don't know whether this caused the choppiness to stop. Very unlikely.

I am guessing, playing with AutoCAD is what did the trick. If you can play with some 3D animation and reset the graphics driver, it fixes the choppiness issue. Now my system is smooth as butter!

Hope this helps. Maybe someone could research more...

By the way, I did restart the system couple of times, put the system to sleep and back. The system seems to be fixed.

I would not recommend CleanMyMac, based on the number of complaints that have been posted in this forum and elsewhere. As an example: CleanMyMac cleaned too much. While you may not have experienced problems yet, enough people have that it's wise to avoid it, especially since there are free alternatives that have better reputations, such as Onyx.

You don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps to keep your Mac running well, and some of these apps can do more harm than good. Most only remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, which does nothing more than free up some drive space, with the risk of deleting something important in the process.

These apps will not make your Mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on a drive does not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space. In fact, deleting some caches can hurt performance, rather than help it, since more system resources are used and performance suffers while each cache is being rebuilt.

Many of these tasks should only be done selectively to troubleshoot specific problems, not en masse as routine maintenance.

Mac OS X does a good job of taking care of itself, without the need for 3rd party software. Among other things, it has its own maintenance scripts that run silently in the background on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, without user intervention.

I love you! This definitely did the trick for me! I guess the graphics became laggy when I used AutoCAD for the first time and I couldn't close it properly (I forced it). I was going to giving up until I find this thread.

I even repaired the disk and permissions; and totally broke my iMac; and had to use Diskwarrior to repair it...

Thank you!

After my MBP 13" (2010) has been on/sleeping for a day, the changing desktop animation and mission control gets choppy. Only a reboot fixes this problem and it stays good until several hours. I already reset SMC but it didn't work.

Anyone else experiencing this issue and how can I fix it?
