Apologies if this has already been posted, but I spotted on the Blizzard Tech Support forum that some Blizzard games will not be supported under Lion. They will still be fine in Bootcamp or Snow Leopard.

This summer, Apple is scheduled to release Mac OS X 10.7, Lion. Due to advances in Mac operating systems, StarCraft, StarCraft: Broodwar, Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction will not run on 10.7.
While these titles will not be able to run natively in 10.7, they should still be able to operate under Boot Camp. And of course, we will still support these titles running in 10.6 and below natively.

At this time, we expect Warcraft III to run natively in Mac OS X 10.7.

As Lion's release date gets closer, we look forward to having more details for our Mac community.

For more information about Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, please see Apple's website:

Some Blizzard games not supported in 10.7 Lion...yet.

And that's it. Lion is in beta so that devs can update their clients to work properly with the OS. So until they release this update the applications just won't work.

No need to think about this, you shouldn't be using 10.7 for anything other than testing anyway.

Those specific games aren't going to run simply for the fact that they are PowerPC binaries. PowerPC support on Intel (Rosetta) appears to have ended with Lion.

I believe that Warcraft III is a Universal app.

Whoops! I guess that means GameStop, Wal*Mart, Target, etc, will have to stop selling SC and D2 come this fall. I'm not sure if I'm more disappointed in Blizzard for not updating their game, or for Apple for breaking compatibility, again.

Honestly. For a loooong time, those 2 games (and WC3) were the ONLY computer games worth buying if you had a mac.

This is a sad, sad, day.

Blizzard could write a Universal binary for those products and continue to sell them. I believe that Blizzard has more pressing things to do than keep an 11 year old game running on Lion.

I love all my PowerPC-based Macs (I still own a Wallstreet, a Pismo and a PowerBook G4), but Apple can't keep supporting the architecture forever.

Well that sucks... I still have D2 installed. It looks like I'll have to uninstall and not play it anytime in the near future after Lion comes out :(

Well, D3 should be here soon enough :) Isn't the release date for summer as well?

My Warcraft III install discs rely on a PPC only installer. Once updated via battle.net, the apps are patched as universal. Reinstalling them once Lion ships, will be annoying but I have to get my WC3 fix once in a while.

Can't you just download and install from Battle.net?

No, a release date hasn't been announced. However, the beta should start late summer/autumn, with a release late -11 or beginning of -12.

Diablo II and StarCraft will never be supported in Lion because Lion will never get Rosetta support.

Currently where I live at the moment, my Internet connection sucks. I often tether off my phone for faster downloads, but don't want to get throttled when I need the data speed for work stuff.

Is it really that big of an issue? We already have SC2 which will work. And Diablo 3 is coming soon which will work on Lion. How many are honestly going to play these legacy games? It's time to move on, folks.

Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne should still work, but as it may fall under legacy, I do feel the need to defend it.
There's been no game as good as WC3 for 5+ years now, in terms of a game that mixes both fantasy and chess-like elements. It mixes the best elements of throw-away unit tactics with hero units, which in order to win, you are compelled to both use, yet try to keep from dying.
I like World of Warcraft, but it's not the same.

That's not what it says. Blizzard is pretty clear here that those games will NEVER run natively under 10.7.

not a Blizzard game, but I am ultra annoyed I won't be able to play Neverwinter Nights with 10.7. Maybe it will signal Bioware to release the code and let somebody UB it!

It is a big issue for me, I enjoy my "legacy" games a lot. Newer is not always better, especially when it comes to games.

Why would you be disappointed in Blizzard? You're loko if you think any company would update age-old games if they were in the same situation.

Even if you're not a Boot Camp user, these games should run perfectly fine in a VM. I periodically spin up the original StarCraft on a Windows VM with absolutely no issues.

Diablo 2 is still selling strong. It was even in the top 10 most sold games of the year in the USA last year I believe.

Old games are still much better than the new games.

That's probably because Lion isn't out yet or release. There no need to think about this. I do expect compatibility issues with the next major OS lion that many other applications other than games that works with current OS snow leopard won't work on Lion either.

Meh, you should be bootcamping for all your gaming needs anyways.

I really, really hope that Lion will FINALLY bump up graphics performance. If kills me a little everytime I have to bootcamp for games that in theory should run just as well on OSX side.

But as I already noted, boot camp isn't necessary for these older games being discussed in this post. I have a VM for several of these old games and then run like a champ in the most recent VMWare release.

Granted, SC2 would probably run a heck of a lot better in boot camp, but that's not what this thread is discussing.
