Just a few Xperia phones to choose from...

Created this as I don't think we have a thread already.
I don't think we even have any active Sony users for these newer, refreshed devices, but the thread is here should anyone ever decide to pick one these up.

I purchased an XZ Premium today, In Luminous Chrome.
Toying for a couple of days between this and the HTC U11, but ultimately went for the Sony as I just preferred the design.

Not had long with it, spent a couple of hours setting it up and getting through the software updates / app downloads and sign in's etc, but the phone handled it all no problem.
It's a very speedy device. Really super quick with no lag anywhere to be found.

I will post some more later on after a little more time with it. I'm still searching for wallpapers and widgets for the home screen, trying to set it apart from how I have my KEYone set up what with that having a smaller screen so not as much content fits.

I will just say that the screen on this XZ Premium is absolutely gorgeous. It also doesn't seem to burn your eyes off, which is something I found with the Pixel and to a smaller extent the S8, both being really neon.
Couple of pics I took before I started setting the device up to my liking:

I will post more about things like the camera, (which I'm not really expecting loads from) and how I'm finding it as I go on for those who may be interested. :)

I always tended to like Sony's industrial design style and this seems to fit it well. I just personally can't stand bezels in any color other than a display matching black. These chrome bezels would distract the hell out of me.

It was one of my concerns as I was toying with whether or not to buy it. And I'm not just saying it, but you don't even notice them. I certainly don't anyway but others may be different.

The industrial style you mention is definitely why I love it so much. :).

Also, for those who don't want the chrome you could always get the black one, although you won't get away from the shininess.

Having a really hard time with a decent screen protector and case for this phone.

If ever I've had a phone that needs protection, it's the XZ Premium.
The screen isn't curved, but the design of the phone curves just off the screen, rounding the sides into the back of the device. A lot of tempered glass portectors apparently don't stick at the sides, with multiple users commenting on this on ones I've seen at Amazon. Apparently you can buy curved ones, but it's the same story as it was with the S8, where there's no adhesive so you end up with false touches due to the gap between the protector and screen. Do not want to go there again.

Even the cases all look pretty rubbish. Gel cases are not really my thing. I've found one that's hard clear plastic, but the clear one is double the price of the smoked black and bronze pink one. And I only really want clear. The reviews of that are all 5 star though, so I may have to go down that route as I'm really conscious of this phone getting beat up very fast, despite me babying it.

Bloody shiney sexy chrome! *Shakes angry fist!

I don't understand why they nerf the FPS for the States, and why Android Pay is disabled as well. Great phone otherwise.

I always loved Sony's squared design. I have used Sony Z3 and Sony Z Ultra GPE in the past and love both devices. I wish they were more popular. I feel as if they do not do any advertising

I've seen a fair few adverts for this. They're really pushing the slow motion video recording, which is pretty cool. I need to take some when I next walk the dog.

But yeah, prior to the ads for this phone there hasn't been loads.

Sony seem to have a bit of a following too, when I worked at CPW we always sold a lot of their flagship phones. Even cheaper ones went pretty well but on the flip side the cheaper ones were always the ones that came back for repair a few weeks / months later...

https://m.androidcentral.com/sony-fingerprint-sensors-us-deals

Basically the reason why. Sucks for Americans because the Sony fingerprint scanner is one of the best ones IMO and is in such a good location.

I have 5 fingers set up for mine and use each of them everyday depending on where the phone is on my desk.

Thanks for linking to that. It doesn't really explain why other than some vague deal Sony has in place that would be jeopardized by turning on FP functionality. I don't quite understand it, but it suggested selling mobile phones to US customers just isn't something Sony prioritizes.

Shame. Their phones seem great.

Well looks like Photobucket are now charging for using your images on third party sites such as this - which sucks after I uploaded a load on there yesterday which took a while!

***TYPICAL ANERES IMAGE HEAVY / LENGTHY POST INCOMING***

Been using the XZ Premium for a couple of days solidly now so thought I'd post a few thoughts.

I have to say I'm particularly impressed with it for a number of reasons, but mainly because it pretty much does everything well, and in some cases really well.
The phone is pretty big, as you can see in the photos the chin and forehead are quite large, but in everyday use it isn't quite as bad as pictures would have you believe. Strangely enough.

It's heavy, but it isn't too heavy. I used an iPhone 7 Plus with a pretty bulky case on for months so this is fine for me.
The chrome is a bit out there, as it is basically a mirror, but I think this version looks so much better than the shiny black.

The phones screen is basically the star attraction for me. I don't think I've ever used a mobile phone with as good a screen. Colours are just amazing, they look natural, smooth and crisp and no matter what you are looking at on this phone, it looks great.

This leads me onto another reason I love it - customisation. I love changing my wallpapers, and this phone basically looks good no matter what wallpaper you throw on. The more colourful the better though for me, as it really shows that display off. Also, Sony themes have always been a reason I've liked their devices. I downloaded a Spider-Man one which coincides with the new film and it's pretty cool. Doesn't change things too much, such as buttons etc (as some go wayyyy overboard) but the moving wallpaper is awesome.

Battery life so far has more than surpassed my expectations. I am really pleased at how all the big manufacturers recently are managing to get a lot more out of their batteries than previous devices. I can't think of a flagship this year that has been criticised for poor battery (could be wrong?) which is great to see.

With the 4k display here, I expected to be needing the charger come 8pm, but no such case at all. You can see what kind of usage I'm getting below. Huge thumbs up.
This was unplugged at around 7am.

Camera. Well I half expected to be disappointed but I couldn't be more wrong. Sony really do seem to have taken some strides compared to the XZ that I had last year. I don't really know what they'e done, but this is now a much more reliable shooter than that was. It takes photos pretty quickly and whilst there is still too much processing done after the shot is taken, results can be impressive. Attached some below.

These ones were all taken in fairly low lighting. Both outside and in. I used the phone at a wedding and a lot of people were complimenting the front facing camera as we took selfies (I won't share those... haha). They all had iPhones... I'm saying nothing.

Really impressive results. It hasn't disappointed me once yet, and it has been used in real social instances where I wouldn't want it to let me down. Very impressed.

I have been tinkering with the slow motion video recording and it can be tricky if you need to slow the video down at the exact second. However tonight I nailed it with my sister throwing the dog a treat which I slowed down at the exact time he dived and caught it in his mouth! :D It looks great. I'll upload that when I figure out the best way, might just have to be YouTube. It's such a cool feature.

As I mentioned when I got the phone, the speed of the device is blazing. No slow down or hang up at all which I knew was going to be the case after reading a lot of reviews which all said the same thing.
It handles everything you can possible throw at it with ease, and I'm comparison I can now notice the very small hiccups and stutters on my KEYone.
I'm a big fan of Sony putting Google now into their software so when you swipe to the left of the home screen you're right there. I think that's a great feature to be built into the phone, and I use that almost daily.

Things I don't like?

Well I could really do without all of that Sony bloatware. We're lucky in the UK that carriers don't add anything to devices like they do in the US. But Sony has about 9 apps for all sorts of different things and it is just excessive and annoying. They notify me all the time, despite me being sure I had turned them off. You can disable them, and also delete them but it's annoying that they are there. Although things like Sony's weather app looks really good:

1ngwyQD.jpg

I don't like there is no night filter built into the OS. Loads of Android devices do this now and I would get a lot of use out go it. Shouldn't have to be downloading a third party one.

On screen buttons. Annoying as you lost a good bit of screen. Not a problem with some devices but when you have that chin, and then the space for buttons and then your on screen keyboard, typing can get a bit 'reachy' despite lowering the VKB height. I can't lower it too much, otherwise it is basically unusable as I'm no fan of VKB at the best of times! :p

No double tap to wake? Why Sony. It was on my XZ? Double tap to sleep is there, but no wake. Odd.

No lock screen notifications. This goes hand in hand with the above. My KEYone had lock screen notifications and when I had a notification the screen would kind of half come on and just display a black background with white text detailing the notification. None of that here. So this is where double tap to wake would help so I could easily reach over when it's on my desk to quickly check if I was needing to reply to something. Instead I have to press the power / unlock button to do that, which is really annoying.

Those niggles aside, I am enjoying this phone a lot. I should have known seeing how much I liked the XZ, but this is in a whole other ball park. I personally think it is one of the best looking phones in years, which is odd given the criticism
it has had because of the bezels. But for me, it's a winner in the looks department.

Hope this helps anyone who is considering the phone :).
Sorry for the length of post, I do tend to go one when I get excited about new tech! :p

If I could use the FPS and Android Pay on that phone in the States, I'd have placed my order yesterday.

My bank doesn't support Android Pay but they have their own version which uses the NFC chip and it's the same as contactless debit card payments so I'm set whatever device I have. Just needs an NFC chip. But I understand re the fingerprint scanner. Sony really shooting themselves in the foot.

I have to have a good FPS. I use my phone for work, which requires at a minimum passcode lock screen or better. I cannot go back to the days of punching in 4-6 digit code god knows how many times a day. It's one of the reasons I'm increasingly using my Sammy S8 Plus less and less.

Getting some great SoT with this phone.
Feels like I've not been off it all day today, granted I haven't done anything that should strain the battery too much, but I've been social media-ing most of the day. Searching Instagram for ages for house stuff and being embroiled in several WhatsApp conversations - feels like the phone hasn't been out of my hand!

Not bad compared to other Android devices I used.

sounds like someone is getting a new phone today :)

“Don’t go to Best Buy” should be what the little guy on my shoulder just keeps repeating to me constantly. :)

Anywho, it was not on display. Seemed strange I saw that on their website for my local store. I never recall Best Buy doing this, B&H Photo I know does and it is very accurate.

Well they had one left, don’t know how many they got initially as I did not ask. The mobile employee asked if I wanted it and of course I did (he knows me well) but I balked because of the price. He said that they were running a holiday special, appliances $799 and above one can get 18 months interest free with their BB CC. BUT that now was inclusive of some electronics.

What the heck, he rang it up and the last step to choose an option for payment with CC since one is a Rewards member included 24 months interest free. Maybe because I am a habitual BB spender, not sure cause even he was surprised.

I repeat, do not go to Best Buy today. :)

So wait. I'm confused with your American payment things... BUT DID YOU GET IT?!

Yes and a big reason was because of the generous interest free payments for 24 months.

Not much time I had to spend with it, partying at a neighbor's house today. Swimming pool, barbecue and then fireworks tonight. :)

@AppleRobert , I'm intrigued. I did listen to a Verge or Android Central podcast one time and they recommended using the international unlocked version here in the US for the fingerprint sensor. Also, that model is $670 USD on Amazon. But obviously, they can't beat the financed deal you got at BB

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Premium...071ZDMFJ5/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

I may try this phone out and return in the 30-day window if I don't like it. FP sensor is a big deal to me but not necessarily a deal breaker.
