Hello, I recently upgraded my PowerBook Pismo to G4 500mhz, and with 512MB of RAM. I have installed Sorbet Leopard but it gives this error at boot.

Is there a solution or is it incompatible?

I think max OS officially for Pismos is Tiger ie. 10.4.x, the Sorbet is a Leopard-variation ie. 10.5. There are some rumors that Pismo could run Leopard but it needs some third party software (and the G4 update you have) to do it. I have no knowledge of what software is needed. But out of the box it might not work like you are finding out. You could find a solution though so keep on looking.

You could try Shuriken if you want readily tuned Tiger.

There is a firmware update for the Pismo that should solve it. I don’t remember what it is off hand but if you search you should be able to find it. I had the same issue. The update fixed it.

Also, you can add 1gb of ram to the Pismo despite Apple’s official specs.

Almost forgot, after you successfully install Leopard, you should add the Rage 128 driver. It’s available on Macintosh Garden on the Sorbet Leopard page.

Even with the 128 patch you will still have some glitches. The graphics seems to be the greatest limitation for G4 upgraded Pismo’s.

Thanks!! I did a quick search for "Pismo firmware Sorbet Leopard" on Google and I didn't find anything. Where can I find that firmware? Does anyone have it available?

I'm going to download the Ati RAge drivers, thanks a lot for the detail.

Delete the Sorbet from your search. Sorbet only couple of years old. What you are looking for was something that was released 20 something years ago by somebody (who?).

So, try to search for info on how to install Leopard to Powerbook Pismo (or whatever version number it has).

Sorry, I explained myself badly in the "edit". I downloaded the firmware that I linked, installed it and now Sorbet Leopard works, it has installed the "f5".

Thanks for your help.

It is unrelated to PowerPC so I'll only mention this once, but a Trimcelerator / Sorbet / Shuriken follow-up is now in development for macOS Monterey.

If anyone wants to help, let me know via private message.

Back in the day I would have just posted a mysterious image because it was fun but nobody liked that so I don't care anymore.

Yes, but - what will you call it? Another fruity frozen dessert thing? Another ninja weapon? I have questions...

How about simply Sorbet Leopard 2.0? Gets the idea across very cleanly.
Because his next project isn't based on Leopard but rather Monterey.

The Basilosaurus is one of the largest animals known to exist in the pre-historic periods. What's funny is that evidence of this species was never found anywhere near Monterey Bay, but I like the theme of referencing something big or special that existed in the depths of the bay, alluding to extracting the potential that lay beneath the surface of macOS Monterey (or something like that).

Really? I thought the Monterey reference just indicated the release of SSL certs and the like that the new release will be compatible with.

Does Monterey NEED a Sorbet-like makeover? I use Monterey every day and it is great!

For those who don't know or may not have been around for my previous exchanges with @z970, my question about the name was just a light-hearted jab. Something along the lines of this. Wasn't trying to start a serious discussion about the name of his new Monterey effort.

That said, MacOS Basilosaurus...ain't bad 😄

Likewise, my response was a joke. Though I think @jktwice does make a compelling case for Basilosaurus or something to that effect; though perhaps it can be a smaller and more agile native species instead since this project will be more akin to a basic Trimcelerator tool rather than a hot-rodded custom assembly like Sorbet.

And on another note, Monterey is still far too new to warrant a total overhaul to that type of scale, and nor can I afford the time commitment to facilitate such. So this time, the only goal is to make unsupported models (like my 2010 MacBook Air) feel like faster systems than they are since everything else about the OS is already a mostly flawless experience courtesy of OCLP.

But I digress.

Something along the lines of this.

I forgot about that thread. I didn't realize at the time that it was indeed possible to run a business and participate in online forums in parallel, and not just in sequence.

Live and learn ...

good question. Not immediately, but one day very soon it’ll need updated certificates, security, and SSL. But overall, it would be nice to have some upgrades for the last OS with 32 bit support.

When I think of Monterey, I think of Monterey Jack cheese. Just a thought.

An interesting quirk I just experienced this morning. I installed the iphone 3.1.3 SDK + xCode 3.1.4 package and then rebooted my sorbet installation. Prior to rebooting, I recieved an "updating boot cache" message, then the machine continued with its reboot. Upon restarting, it could not find sorbet lol. I got the blinking I dunno folder. How I remedied this was to boot into my Leopard partition and select the Sorbet install. The first time I did this, I did not lock the window and despite instructing syspref to boot into Sorbet, it returned to Leopard. Second times a charm - this time I selected Sorbert and then locked the sys pref window (lower left hand corner) forcing reboot to Sorbet.

This returned me to my regular scheduled programming. :)

Anyways, just a weird quirk and how I recovered from it. I did not try a pram reset which I think may have also corrected the issue but dems da breaks LOL.

Lesson? Install Leopard on a separate partition alongside Sorbet, just in case you need it :)
