Don't throw your laptop down the stairs and don't sit on it and the macbook won't chip. The only reason why it chips is because people are not treating them well.
You are incorrect. Normal wear and tear will entail this kind of paint chipping. I've used TONS of Space Gray Macs (personally, I always buy Silver; but you can't control what [a] Employers buy and what shows up on eBay) and have taken pretty good care of them. The colored coating will chip even with normal connecting and disconnecting of USB-C cables. It's absolutely a thing.

I’ve been pondering over the color choice for the new MacBook Pro M4 Pro. I have a space gray one, and after three years, the entire area to the left of the trackpad has faded from hand contact. Scratches from my watch are minimal and don’t affect the appearance. Space black will look same or worse. Btw I am using my laptop not preserving it for future generations. I believe that the new colors Apple introduces are solely to boost sales, which is understandable. The silver, which has been a top choice for years, is there for a reason. It’s definitely the Apple color, associated with the reliability and top quality of these laptops. This preference has been confirmed by millions of customers. Black, gray, or any other color makes such a computer lose something intangible, indescribable. Silver definitely wins. Of course, I respect everyone who prefers other color options. After all, de gustibus non est disputandum.

After owning the space black m3 pro i opted for silver when m4 pro came. My own reason the space black was bit too dark at my desk. I wanted something with more contrast at my desk.

Sold off my Space Black M3 Max and relieved to go back to silver for M4 Pro + nano texture display.

I was gaga for Space Black when it first came out but after a year I'm over it. I had to be extra careful docking it to avoid scratches and removed my watch when typing. It wasn't worth the hassle. Beyond that, often the Space Black looked dull and plain. It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry dates a "two face" -- under different lighting his girlfriend looked like two different women. Same for the Space Black. From some angles it looked great but other times it looked like a generic plastic Windows laptop from the 1990s.

After almost 10 years of silver Macbooks the Space Black was initially a breath of fresh air, but it only took one year to get bored of Space Black and appreciate silver again.

its super nerdy to spend time justifying device colors that only we look at. The new silver is pretty and the black gets stains easily but the reason to get black is because it blends and helps with focus. It's a utility device after all. I go with black and bang this thing around. who cares. Nobody ever complimented me for my devices. They only care about how my body looks and how clean my car is on the inside.

The biggest advantage to owning the space black is when you have marks, a black jiffy marker restores the laptops finish and you won't even be able to tell.

even though Apple likes to introduce space black as resistant it's still a finger print magnet from my experience.
best prefer silver. timeless mac OG look and even if you ding your usb-c connector on accident less likely to notice.
seen the Apple ones in store and omg, the whole port is worn out and put me off lol.

[i do baby my stuff as i keep it long term and never resell second hand market ever]
