I found this from another forum, and it solved the problem for me. At first I thought it was hardware support issue (rMB 12"), but it wasn't.

If you can't get Split Screen to work (side by side full screen windows) in El Capitan, you'll need to enable "Displays have separate spaces", located in System Preferences > Mission Control. This will require you to log out and back in. Then, simply click and hold on the green "Full Screen" button and drag the window to another part of the screen. Voila!

Bingo, that was the problem. Thanks for sharing it.

Got it working in non full screen mode, choose app hold the green button down for second or two and it will do it. it's not hardware dependant.... I am on 15 MBP 2013 MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) happy to help any one. NB: Looks like it has to be updated apps iTunes doesn't support this yet.

It's working for me but it's not particularly smooth.. When in split view the resizing option leaves one of the screens blank and is a very jittery process. Otherwise, looks like a really good feature. Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 20.13.26.png Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 20.14.05.png Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 20.14.18.png

I'm interested to know whether you can trigger split screen without a force-touch pad?
I was hoping for a window snapping.... So it seems the split screen is nothing like the window snapping in Windows or BetterTouch Tools app or is that a separate feature?

Yes you can, i don’t have the Force-touch and it works for me

From what I can tell it only works when you are using apps in there full screen mode, also if your just trying to do it by holding the green button you need to have multiple non full screen windows open. Otherwise nothing will happen. This isn't designed like snap for windows 7+

I look forward to trying it out when public beta is released... but it sounds like I might just stick with the simple window snapping provided by bettertouch tools and similar apps. It sounds a little unnecessarily complicated for a simple task which can be achieved by drag & drop. I look forward to trying it out soon.

This solved the whole thing.

I'm running Mid-2009 MBP, and I'm in splitscreen-mode now with Safari & Messages. Nice! :)

Seeing some issues with tabs in Safari. The other window in split screen covers the tabs up and even after quitting out of split screen, the tabs are still not visible.
Reported to Apple.

In System Preferences > Mission Control, tick the box for "Displays have separate Spaces," then log out and back in (or restart). Voila.

Just installed El Capitan on my 2015 Retina MacBook, but I can't seem to get Split View to work at all. I held the full screen zoom (green button) down with my trackpad in Safari, but the Split View mode from the WWDC Keynote never showed up.

Anyone else having this issue, or am I just missing something?

Never mind,

Yep, also confirming that enabling the System Preference > Displays Have Their Own Spaces option worked for me.

Unfortunately I have multiple monitors and I don't like have Menu Bars on every screen, so it's back to Moom for me. Works much better IMHO than split view.

it is working fine for me on rmpb late 2013 without force touch. Here is the screenshot.

I think there are two separate issues here. One is split view not being enable which I think we've resolved via the "displays have separate spaces" checkbox.

The other is split view not working properly once enabled. I'm on on "13 2015 rMBP and cannot get split view working with the App Store in any scenario as the user quoted above did. I also cannot get it to work with iTunes in any capacity. Other apps exhibit strange behavior; Spotify only work with maps, why would that be ? I realize that Spotify can only be sized down to 2/3rds of the screen but there are other apps (like safari) which are able to open in 1/3rds view yet they do not seem compatible.

Id love if someone more knowlegable could shed some light here, maybe I'm missing something but it feels kinda like a bug ...

What is that? Photos? Some apps won't work in split screen. I think that is one of them. Try dropping messages or mail into split screen w/ Safari just to make sure it works for you.
I tried, it doesn't work either.

Guys, this feature is exclusive to certain Macs at the moment. It has nothing to do with the apps you're using. I was able to confirm with another developer that on two different Macs with the same apps, he sees completely different behavior. The iMac works fine but 15" rMBP doesn't.

I filed a radar and we'll see what Apple says. It is probably going to be improved and expanded to include more Macs in the next DP.

Just to be clear, is there anyone here that sees this feature working on '12 15" rMBP?
I agree with you. So apple got bugs to remove.

Perfect!!! this was indeed the problem. I have a rather old Macbook Pro, but it now works.
Going to check for the next problem, the tabs in the mail are not viewable, probably I am doing something wrong
