"In the Pale Moonlight", my favorite DS9 episode, violates the Roddenberry Rule. In this episode Sisko colluded with Garrack to:
  • Prevent a criminal from facing justice
  • Pay a well-connected thief with biomimetic gel, a material used to create biological weapons
  • Fabricate forged evidence
  • Buy Quark's silence by allowing the transit of illegal goods
  • Violate the sanctity of a visiting, invited diplomat
  • Murder innocent people*
  • Cover up the murder
  • Trick the Romulan Empire into a war it was trying to avoid
* This particular act was done without Sisko's prior approval or knowledge. But as Garrack points out, there's a reason that Sisko approached Garrack in the first place, and it certainly wasn't to do everything by the book. And at the very end of the episode Sisko admits to himself that if he had to do it again, he would.

This has become a subscription only show now ?

Well I'm not even gonna watch it then. I already pay cable TV for shows. Not gonna pay cable TV more money for a show produced by one of the networks.

Now if CBS were not on ANY cable company and was subscription only I would reconsider.

I refuse to pay twice for what should be the same thing.

[disclaimer] I do not have any subscription service. [/disclaimer]

Hm.

This strikes me as just a little bit greedy.

It could also be counter-productive; after all, if one has to pay - again - merely in order to be able to view a show, I doubt that it will have the global reach of some of the earlier incarnations of the franchise.

Indeed, I doubt that a show that one must pay (again) to see will ever develop the global recognition whereby sentences such as "make it so", or "beam me up, Scotty" are understood by all.

So you think the audience won't 'engage'!
Maybe that's just 'illogical' thinking!

Maybe the producers were just trying 'to boldly go where no ST franchise has gone before!'

Agree. Or people will just find other ways to watch which won't count on the official numbers so they will think it a flop.
Then no season two.

People won't watch, except for maybe one or two episodes out of curiosity, - and (as happened when I watched Enterprise, very rapidly I realised that this was brutally bad and held no interest for me), or - and it is a big or, unless critics they respect give it the thumbs up which might make them wish to stick with it a bit longer.

The thing is is that CBS in their established model are paid by advertisers, and I believe by the cable company who offers their network. Most customers or at least many customers pay their cable company, but I guess CBS thinks their subscription channel will pay more, but I'd argue not if a small number subscribes to it. I've read article to the effect that CBS does not have high confidence in this show, and imo, trying to put it into a subscription model will just hurt it. I don't plan on subscribing at this point.

I believe that pushing two timelines is problematic for a series.

Star Trek: Discovery: everything you need to know before the series launches Sunday

The show is set chronologically in an era of Star Trek following Star Trek: Enterprise, but before the 1960 Star Trek that fans now refer to as The Original Series. Discovery is a rare new piece of Trek media that takes place in the franchise’s original continuity, instead of in the spinoff “Kelvin Timeline” of the big-budget J.J. Abrams films that have served as the only new Star Trek properties for the last decade.

Bryan Fuller originally envisioned Star Trek: Discovery as an anthology show. It will be serialized instead of episodic.

Adding to that pressure is the worrying amount of behind-the-scenes drama that has plagued Discovery. The show has been delayed multiple times from its original January 2017 release date, and now that it’s launching, CBS is still only planning to air half the first season, with the rest of the episodes slated for January 2018. Discovery’s original showrunner, Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller, left the project after clashing with CBS executives over budget, production schedule, crew selection, and the intriguing idea of Discovery being an anthology series instead of the serialized show CBS preferred. And CBS as a network just doesn’t seem to have faith in the show. CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone commented to Recode’s Peter Kafka that he doesn’t think science fiction shows work on TV these days, and CBS isn’t allowing any reviews of the show in advance, which is never an encouraging sign

One of the criticisms of the show is that instead of being overly optimistic as the previous shows have been, this one will be darker. Until it's seen by audiences, it will hard to predict what that means for the series success.

Guys I disagree. If the show is good, people will watch it. If it’s not good, then it flops. Don’t forget that TNG had a subpar season 1. Either way, the majority of the audience won’t be from the CBS subscription, the show will be pirated.

Putting this on subscription will lower the audience significantly. But I admit I have no idea how the math for a pay network, compares to a free advertisement based network.

Not necessarily. I won't even watch the pilot on plain old CBS because I won't pay for the rest. I won't pirate it either. Not sure how many people feel the same way.

I won't pirate the show, but I'll watch tomorrow night. That said, like others here, I'm not going to pay for another subscription just to watch one show.

Does your brother? I believe you can share logins with several devices.

No.

Although he (I assume you mean Decent Brother) has a cable service with some inexplicable number of channels.....very complicated to operate requiring juggling several controls all at once.

Actually, I remember watching the results of the 2015 election from his place and being quite unable to work out how to even change channels......

The Scottish referendum result, I also watched from his place - but switched to listening to the radio when I headed off to bed; easier to handle.

However, he is trying to convert me to the joys of a Kindle........

I'm more of a physical book type of person. But to be honest I've not done much reading lately.

Likewise.

Hence, - partly - my problems with Kindles.

Basically, the story is on my last long term deployment abroad, a few years ago, following advice, I invested in a Kindle (the 'white paper' one). Decent Brother asked a good friend of this (whom I have known for years - we exchanged fantasy books) to upload dozens - if not hundreds - of books.

Said friend did so, but - seemingly - omitted one important step, possibly assuming that I was more tech savvy than I am, with the result that 1) I was unable to open any file, and 2) as a consequence, I was mightily irked, and 3) I have become pretty biased against this form of technology subsequently.

Decent Brother has now asked said friend to visit the house to do the job properly - and, in fairness, they both have been volunteering to try to remedy this for the past few months. My lack of enthusiasm is evident, but - if they manage an idiot proof experience, I will manage profound expressions of gratitude.

They're trying to put it on-par with Game of Thrones, which is only on HBO, of course a premium subscription channel.

I'll watch it on OTA CBS today, then I'll watch The Orville S1E3 on my Xbox One for free...

(The Orville is one of my favorite shows now. ST Discovery - it won't matter how much I like it as I won't pay money to watch it for the first time.)

The thing with GoT is that the books - themselves gripping, and at times, extraordinarily good - had already made this world familiar to a vast potential audience, and thus, an audience was primed to see how this story might translate to the screen (extraordinarily well. by all accounts).

This is not the same with a 'new world' - of unfamiliar characters - to the ST franchise in a new series, especially as the last one "Enterprise" was so.....underwhelming.

We have Sunday Night Football on and I'm recording episode one of ST Discovery. I'm thinking that since they only plan on showing half a season, like The Walking Dead, and show the rest early next year, I might pull a GOT maneuver, wait for the fall episodes to air, then subscribe for a month and binge watch them, but only if they excellent. :)

I might do the same! I hate the mid season split. Although I might be too excited to wait. Just have to hold out for the first three episodes then it’s easy.
