Also from
(about 11:00), it was mentioned that the actors themselves when they were shooting part 1 didn't know what would happen in part 2! DON'T watch that video unless you've finished Picard season 3 ep 9 (second to last episode of show). There are Picard show spoilers in there!

Looks like Paramount is making another Star Trek show, the negatives far outweight the positives

Doesn't look like my type of Star Trek, but then I'm an old curmudgeon and this show seems to be aimed at a different demographic then the fans of TOS/TNG/DS9/etc

You're not the only one. I watched that and ... yeah, I couldn't even get through the first quarter of Discovery's first season. It's giving me the same feeling. Whatever that is, it's not Star Trek.

I guess I'm an old TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY Trekkie. Thanks to the ArsTechnica article on that trailer, I found out about this:

That was an amazing watch this morning. Apparently the Nimoy and Kirk estate helped make this video - Nimoy's widow and Roddenberry Jr too. Shatner also helped.

I am going to be going out of my way to buy TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY and re-watching those over the next several years. That is Star Trek. Those shows had an immense impact on me as a kid watching them in the 90s - why I got into tech and computers - and why I tried to be the best human I could be for a better future for us all. I miss the Roddenberry Trek.

The fans who watched TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY when they aired are in their 40s to 80s. If that is the only fans Star Trek tailors it's content to, eventually there will not be any of them left.

So you need to get new viewers in their 20s like TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY did in their day. And that is what CBS/Paramount have been doing with the film reboot series and Discovery.

And hey, even for us old-timers (I am 56 and grew up on TOS re-runs and watched STAS onwards at air) we were given an (effective) eighth season of TNG with Picard S3 and Lower Decks is a love letter to all of Star Trek and actually helped make The Animated Series canon. :)

I expect I will be generally ambivalent on SFA as I was on later seasons of Discovery, but I will watch it. I love Paul Giamatti and respect Holly Hunter immensely and it will be nice to see Robert Picardo again.

I'm not complaining, just pointing out that this show isn't for me. With that said, studios have been rather quick to alienate their most ardent fans, I think Discovery is an example of this, thought Star Trek Strange New Worlds is something that most trekkies gotten behind

I grasp what you're saying and not trying to disprove it - but my thoughts on the matter:

Discovery is dark. The Picard Season 1-2 was incredibly dark and flew in the face of canon and the spirit of Star Trek. It was a slap in the face to what made Star Trek - Star Trek. It was as if the director didn't even have a grasp of what Trek was (I believe this actually was the case, the director apologized). Picard Season 3 was better.

I don't know - I think there's a way to mold Star Trek to the newer generation without crapping all over what made Star Trek what it is.

To be fair, we heard much the same with Deep Space Nine. It wasn't on a starship. The crew never went anywhere in the first two seasons. The Cardassian occupation of Bajor was too uncomfortable a reminder of occupied genocides of Earth's history. And then with the Dominion War Arc we had whole fleets and planets being destroyed with billions dead and the introduction of Section 31, the absolute antithesis of what we were told Starfleet and the Federation stood for. Of course, one of the more well-regarded episodes of Star Trek - "In the Pale Moonlight" - has Sisko taking a page right out of S31's playbook, so...

Indeed. And with Alex Kurtzman's current contract soon to expire there are rumors the new owners of Paramount (Skydance) are not going to renew it. That being said, who do they get to replace him?

The third season of "Picard" made the Nielson Streaming Top 10 under Terry Matalas, but he's now working with Disney+ and Netflix so even if Skydance was interested in making "Star Trek: Legacy" a thing, it might not be possible for years (or it would be made without significant input from Matalas which means it might not be what fans expect).

I think Discovery takes what DS9 did and went significantly further to the point that it doesn't even "feel" like Star Trek. Obviously that's a personal opinion ($.02).

Third season of Picard was a HUGE improvement over S1/S2 which were very difficult to watch as a self proclaimed Trekkie.

And I'm someone who has never watched Enterprise (more than a handful of episodes). Watching Enterprise after Discovery was eye opening - Enterprise feels like Star Trek. (It's now on my to do list).

I really liked Lower Decks. I really really liked Orville. Hell - Orville felt more like Star Trek to me than anything recent (lots of younger people I know like this).

As the video is region locked, I assume this is about Starfleet Academy?

Yeah, what I've seen doesn't really fill me with confidence. The nostalgia bait is blatant and I'm not even sure to which demographics this show is targeted at. At least Paul Giamatti seems to enjoy himself.

The only recent Star Trek shows I really enjoyed are Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks. Picard managed to start out every season quite interestingly, but then completely went off the rails each time.

I'm an old fart and I could get into a StarFleet Academy.
As the grounds keeper; surely not as a cadet.🙃

I'm with the other old guards. These new Star Trek isn't for me, except Lower Decks. The optimism is lacking--the future is a dreary place where the might makes right and strong prey on the weak. In short, our current trajectory projected centuries into the future. TOS and TNG never happen. We never learned, we never grew beyond our barbaric ways.

Q was right.

That's how people felt before Gene Roddenberry showed up. I don't agree with everything about his vision, but he saw a spark within humanity that, if fanned, can achieve something closer to utopia than many of us (including me) cynically believe. And I think he was on to something.

He tapped into that, and that's what makes the best Star Trek worth watching. Maybe we're farther from than than he hoped, but it's never impossible. And if we can't envision it, dream of it, it certainly won't happen.

Hmm. Looks like Starfleet academy has a Big Villain in it. That has never really worked in Trek IMO, with the single exception of Wrath of Khan (and that was a long time ago). In Trek, the challenges are alien culture & institutions, major natural externalities, technical hurdles. The ones that center around a Bad Guy threatening everything tend to be lame, or just feel like a reskinned Hollywood plot.

I think Discovery takes what DS9 did and went significantly further to the point that it doesn't even "feel" like Star Trek. Obviously that's a personal opinion ($.02).

I've been a lifelong Trek watcher but don't consider myself a Trekkie - but a couple Trekkie friends I trust on these matters advised me not to even bother with Discovery and I haven't. Perhaps someday.

Third season of Picard was a HUGE improvement over S1/S2 which were very difficult to watch as a self proclaimed Trekkie.

I watched the first two episodes of Picard S1 and concluded that, shockingly, it WAS possible for Patrick Stewart to be in a Star Trek series I didn't want to watch. That was a painful realization. Though everyone seems to agree the third season sort of saves it. Maybe I'll Wikipedia the first two and just watch S3....

And I'm someone who has never watched Enterprise (more than a handful of episodes). Watching Enterprise after Discovery was eye opening - Enterprise feels like Star Trek. (It's now on my to do list).

Enterprise was....not good IMO. The decontamination chamber scenes were soooooo cringe. But the concept was sound, and it had good bits in it here and there. And if Discovery was as bad as my Trekkie friends say, then Enterprise is most certainly better (less worse?) than that.

I really liked Lower Decks. I really really liked Orville. Hell - Orville felt more like Star Trek to me than anything recent (lots of younger people I know like this).

I find Lower Decks not to my taste, but then again adult animation isn't my jam. The concept sounds fine. The 1.5x dialogue speed is seriously grating, I think it effects the episode pacing in a negative way for me. Though I seem to be in a minority of one on that. I think I made it through S1 or S2 before I dropped off.

I grew up in the time after TOS, but still watched it in reruns during my youth. TNG was a big leap, but found its feet and became its own thing.

The TOS movies were mostly good, the TNG movies less so.

So, as a lover of the old stuff, the only more recent Trek that has held my attention are LD and SNW. I made my way through all three seasons of Picard, but dropped Discovery after the first or second.

Have never felt compelled to watch the NuTrek movies, to this day, mostly due to JJ's habit of promising much, but failing to deliver the payoff.

If you live long enough, you see the peaks and valleys, and hope not to be stuck in the latter.

After Roddenberry, I can remember the beginning of the end for Harve Bennett, with ST V.

If the end is coming for Kurtzman, then we'll just have to see what form Trek will take with the next one up. Same with Kennedy and Star Wars.

But the thing to remember is that it's not compulsory to watch, or like this stuff, so it can be kept at arm's length. Neither are going away any time soon, so you just hope that you can see the peaks again, as with any franchise.

Same with Bond. I grew up with the more serious Connery, and later too-goofy Moore Bond. In hindsight, Dalton was better than being given credit for at the time, and the Brosnan Bond was what you'd expect. I appreciate what they tried to do with Emo Craig Bond, but I couldn't fully embrace it because that's not the Bond I grew up with and expected, but it was still fine. But the next test will be what Amazon does with the franchise now that it has complete control.

Well, I went to my first Star Trek Convention in SF on Friday. Actually, it was my first Con of any kind, and I am 65 y.o.. Anyway, I just got a one day pass and had a great time. Almost all of the fans were in costume (except me). Very nice people and a good vibe all around. Most fans have a favorite Trek, and I guess costumes reflect preferences. BTW - for me, it is Star Trek Enterprise. I know. I know. It was not well received when it came out, but I think it has started to grow on fans now that it is on streaming.

I got autographs from Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating. They were quite gracious and spent a fair amount of time talking to fans. All of the actors charge for photos and autographs, but I didn't mind....they need to make a living.

There were some fun events and interviews in the main theater with a wide range of actors. One panel discussion featured Doug Jones, Saru from Discovery. He was hilarious. A real entertaining guy. Another panel featured extras from the original series, like Bobby Clark who played the Gorn in Arena.

Anyway, if you have never gone to a ST Convention, I would recommend doing it at least once. Good fun.
I have been to many ST and SW conventions - mostly in the late 90s and early 2Ks. They really are/were great fun.

I am also a fan of Enterprise. Outside of TNG and the TOS movies, it’s a great “prequel” part of the story arc. So much of what that series is criticized for is poignantly what like about it. The stark/rudimentary and weak ship is great. I love how basic, unpolished and wimpy it is. The ship does a great job in showing the evolution of ST technology and how their best for ENT in the 22nd century was beyond the absolute worst of what we saw and got used to in the 23rd and 24th centuries etc. it adds context to later TOS/TNG/DS9/Voy etc. franchise to understand where ST started. Archer and Trip do a great job of bridging the mentality and evolution from paranoid prewarp human civilization to space exploring Federation humans. Their performance IMO does a good job illustrating having one foot on the bridge of the NX1 and still having the other foot knee deep in the paranoid, gritty, muck and mire of where humanity was moving away from. They are very relatable in that way. I think my favorite relationship was that between Archer & the Andorians (they’re the best! :) ) Commander Shran. Tripp and T’pol was good as well but predictable lol). I also liked the fact that they introduced the equivalent of space marines in S3 which was a great addition as it showed again, the tentacles of that paranoid legacy humanity creeping in. This was also interestingly very political as this was right after 9/11 and reflected on the paranoid nature of our US govt at the time and expansion of Federal power.

Anyways, goofy intro aside (lol) the series is great and one of my favs.

I’m a fan of anime but not a fan of adult animation when it intersects with an all real life acting franchise like ST or SW. For example, Lower Decks was a turn off for me. The same was true for SW Clone Wars, Rebels etc. I am not a fan of the format switch and is hard for me to watch to where I haven’t. I’ve tried to watch a few episodes but can’t get into them.

My own viewing of new series pretty much stopped with Enterprise. Even Enterprise when it aired I consistently worked when it played on TV so missed the whole thing. I saw it years later as a steam on my wife’s old kindle fire ereader. My wife & I would binge Enterprise episodes (mixed with X-Files & Frasier for some laughs) evenings in bed lol probably right after we were married so this was around 2012. Anyways, fast forward to 2020 - I caught a few episodes of Picard but did not sit through the seasons as I didn’t want to pay for them ie: another streaming service at the time. I did catch key parts as YT clips so got the gyst of the story arc but will need to sit down and watch the entire thing when available. I haven’t jumped into SNW yet or Discovery as time has been tight. Trek friends of mine all told me Discovery was not worth my time. Of course I’ll watch it anyways at some point time permitting of course. SNW looks interesting so will probably watch that first. I mean the sentiment was similar for Enterprise when I started watching that and it turned out to be a fav of mine do Discovery could hit that way. I’m pretty sure I’ll like SNW.

Star Trek Strange New Words does that, it molds trek to the newer generations. It’s about hope, exploration, adventure etc. Discovery just missed the ball, on top of all of its flaws it became focused on a singular character that was not likeable or charismatic, they basically tried to make her like the Luke, the center of the that show/universe while at the time ignoring the crew. To this day i cant name anyone of the officers but you know and care about who they are in ST, STNG, DS9, Lower Decks and STNW unlike Discovery. I never got into Voyager or Enterprise. Another thing they need strong writers which is something is rare these days.

I am also a fan of Enterprise.

I think you summarize much of what I liked about ENT - the technological deficiencies of humans, early alien relationships. Genuine exploration. References to earlier centuries that tie Trek into our own times. My partner HATES Scott Bakula's Archer character. I'm not in that camp but I sometimes find him a bit unconvincing, a Kirk Lite. And ENT's is the only show intro I skip every time. Can't stand it.

ENT HAS generated the all-time longest running (still running) Trek debate amongst my Trekkie friends...I don't even remember who started it, it was so long ago, but it began with the assertion that T'pol, as a Vulcan, would never have gotten bolt-ons. Body modification aimed purely at enhancing physical attractiveness is fundamentally illogical. Discuss. [we've been over every inch of that and gotten no consensus].

For full disclosure, TNG is my favorite Trek. Yes, the first two seasons were very choppy. Some feel like pure TOS, in a bad way. And I am nostalgic about it, which introduces bias. But it's the one I most want to watch, and I've never gotten tired of it.

Aye. The premise behind Enterprise was better than TNG or DS9. Hew-mons under the thumbs of the Vulcans, as Earth was a protectorate of Vulcan. Finally, someone called out he oh so superior Vulcans for their arrogance.🤨 I loved it.🤗
The poor writing torpedoed the show.😢

Yarp. Gawd awful character development. Archer was so proud of the warp 5 engine on the Enterprise, constantly bragging about it.🙄 Well, everyone else has a superior warp engine, bub. It would be like me going to a truck rally and bragging about my '99 Tacoma with its 2.4L engine. Everyone else has a V8 or diesel F-150, Silverado, Sierra, RAM or Tundra. NX-01 is a dainty toy compared to everything else on Enterprise.

I was a fan of Archer and Bakula's performance but as a life long sci-fi fan, I also really liked him and his "style" if you will on Quantum Leap which I watched as well when on TV. I agree he is not everyone's cup of tea but I like what he brought to the character within the constraints of the writers. The story writing wasn't terrible either, but humans baby steps into the cosmos in a wimpy ship under the sornful eyebrow of Vulcan (lol) certainly did not do a good enough job to keep ratings up to not get ENT cut down early at the knees. The last season was my least favorite as it felt really rushed and thin and went to a really dark place which was not characteristic of ST (same thing for DS9 for that matter) I mean they had to re-write and rush into a 4th season finale instead of getting the planned on 7 - that really messed with everything IMO. I think had they been left alone to continue the franchise, there could have been a lot of neat & interesting story and continued character developmen for ENT.

I havent watched it yet but it seems like Discovery fell to the same kind of low ratings excuse that ENT did. Still have to carve out the time to watch that series. SNW looks really entertaining and ties in a story Ive always wanted to see in Captain Pike. When my boys get a little older, Im thinking that would be a fun one to watch with therm.
