The Acolyte- not streaming until 8pm (Central)?? Bad enough it’s one release per week, but they’re dictating the time too??? 🤬👹

This ⬆️. Definitely this!

I'm not interested in YouTuber's reactions to a trailer. I will wait for the show and watch it.

I don't doubt Disney are trying to produce good stories and content for the Star Wars Universe. Good quality content generates more return from bigger audiences.

Good quality content will change perceptions and expectations of the stories and themes of the franchise.

It is hard to do. It involves risk taking. Not all risks work out. We can all think of which Star Wars movies / shows didn't work out.

When you have a well-established universe it is harder and harder to do that. I used to contrast the writing on recent Star Wars media with that for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But since Endgame, they've struggled immensely too.

I'm going to wait and see what they have come up with with Acolyte.
Disney took zero risks when they decided to repeat the Star Wars story portraying it as sequels, so much for risk taking, SO DISSAPOINTED! And the true believers paid for their BS. 🤬🔥 Hard to forgive.

I kind of disagree with this. Slightly above average content will appeal to the highest number of people and generate the most money.
Genuinely brilliant art doesn’t appeal to the masses as the best things in life are an acquired taste.
So I do think to make the best stories they can they have to tread a line between mainstream and genius. Something they appear to be failing to do with regards to Marvel and to a lesser degree Star Wars.

In Acolyte, Mae said don’t pull a light saber unless you are prepared to kill, which led to that whole “force fight” by Indara. But they used light sabers all the time for all kinds of things. The one dude used it as a flashlight.

Must be a new rule.

Poor baby. Must have been rough for you in the days of network TV only, where we had to wait for one episode to air each week at the same time.

At least, back then, you'd get 20+ episodes per season, even if a good portion of them were no good…

But, shows like the X-Files were appointment television, and the popularity of the overtly serialized nature of series like 24, and Lost, meant you had to be engaged, or find yourself lost in the discussion at the water cooler at work. No easy way to catch up, unless you had set the VCR to record them. And no recaps to read on the internet.

OTOH, the instant, all-you-can-eat nature of media today has also robbed things like music of its appeal.

You'd spend your hard earned money on a new album, finally enjoy the singles you heard in better-than-radio quality, and hoped/forced yourself to like the rest of the songs.

Now, a streaming sub gives provides an endless à la carte selection of songs, and is less inclined to promote affinity or loyalty for artists, while they earn only fractions of pennies for each play.

Even more daring to attempt a concept album today, when music consumption is geared toward piecemeal bites.

I'm getting mixed signals regarding this latest series. I've not seen it yet, maybe once its out completely I'll watch it

Depending on who you listen too, its the biggest opening on disnay + or the worst. On one side of the coin, I've heard complaints that sites like Variety offers biased/misleading information when it comes to Disney, but on the other side, you have people who have an ax to grind against Disney.

Here's one reviewer, I wanted to have a non-white, non-male review linked, simply because Disney tends to attack that demographic as to the reason their movies/shows fail, i.e., attacking the customer.

I don't fully agree with what she has, but I do like her insights.

You know, that’s a good idea, hold off until the entire season is released. I may do this. Two episodes released and I'm not yet sold on this story because of its presentation. The opening fight scene is surprisingly good, but the story as presented is holding it back. An easy comparison is Andor, which has an edge and so far is superior in all ways. 🤔

I was never an album person. I would buy them for 1 or 2 songs.

Tried to explain to my daughter that she gets the entire Spotify catalog for what we paid for an album with a single song we liked.

I never bought many 45s so I don't specifically recall how much they cost, but do remember that the cost of CD singles was the worst ripoff, though I did succumb a couple times.

I do own more CD singles, but they result from the hours and hours spent trolling used CD stores as part of the routine. Some gems would turn up occasionally, many of them promos and cutouts.

Still have yet to get around to starting the Acolyte…

It is the standard with these franchises, just make stuff as you go if the writers think it sounds cool. This is obviously the writers thinking of the Jedi as Samurai, in some stories or maybe some group, if their swords were drawn they had to draw blood. Their enemies preferred but if none around they would draw their own blood. Similar idea here, just dumb and obviously does not fit with what has been said in other stories in this world. But hey, continuity in story does not matter, just needs to look and sound cool, story be damned.

Watched the first 2 episodes, tried to go in with an open mind but in the end the episodes lived up to the garbage I was expecting. Again it comes down to the writing, actors can only work with what they are given and in this case it is heaps of....

Garbage? Star War fan doesn't like the latest offering, news at 11. 🙄

Do not misuindersstand my post, I like The Acolyte. The third episode explains why Mae is so pissed at the 4 Jedi. I was just pointing out in my post that it was funny about the use of light sabers.

Not even sure I would classify myself as a Star Wars fan anymore. I grew up loving the original 3, born in the 80's. Read a bunch of the books, Can't remember the names, they started off like a day after Return of the Jedi, one series had Thrawn that was really good, read 4 or 5 series in total I think. Then came Phantom Menace... first reaction was I enjoyed the fighting, but was it dumber and why did the tech look like Star Trek? Outside of liking the faster lightsaber fights, they did not capture me in the same way. Had hopes when the latest 3 came out, but again they were dashed with more horrible writing. This is not unique to Star Wars, it is Hollywood in general. Coherence in writing is close a dead art it seems. For any story to work, especially in fantasy and sci-fi, you need to set some ground rules and then stick with it. Over and over are the rules set before destroyed out of convince for the story. Pretty much the only Star Wars I watch is for the same reason I watch Steven Seagal movies, humour and to see how dumb they can really go.

I have not watched the 3rd episode yet, can't imagine it gets any better, but will be watching it next Friday with a friend.

Star Wars episode 4: A new hope is based on Akira Kurosawa's film Hidden Fortress. George Lucas and his contemporaries were all impressed by Kurosawa.

Jedi are based on samurai and always have been.

Other Kurosawa films that were remade / heavily drawn from include:
  • Seven Samurai, remade as The magnificent seven in 1960 and 2016, and Battle beyond the stars in 1980.
  • Yojimbo, remade as A fist full of dollars in 1964, Django in 1966 and 2013, and Last man standing in 1996

Edited to add a link for the Wikipedia entry for Hidden Fortress:

No surprise here, the Acolyte is not being renewed for a 2nd season. I could not even finish the season and happily watched spoiler reviews to give me the gist of the story. Happy to have decided to. bow out when I did, what a train wreck of a story but I guess that is just keeping with what Disney seems to be doing now. Hopefully they will finally have learned their lesson and start to be faithful to source material and listen to what the fans actually want.

You can never go home again or at least it’s tough getting there. 🤔
