The Misty Mountains
New PC Game.
Estimated Release Time Frame: Spring 2011. (pushed back 9 months)
Estimate Start of Beta Testing: Fall 2010. (pushed back 9 months)
I just read the Jan 2010 PC Gamer which outlines all of the classes for the new soon to be released MMO ST:TOR. This game is firmly in my sights and I'll have to give it a spin. I'm signed up for the beta with fingers crossed. Anyone excited?

BTW, I did a forum search and found no TOR threads. Did I miss one? If not... :)

TOR classes:
Sith Warrior
Bounty Hunter
Republic Trooper
Smuggler
Sith Inquisitor
Jedi Knight
Jedi Consular
Sith Agent

First thing I noticed is most of them are bad guys! ;) The two strongest "force" classes are the Inquisitor and the Consular. What tells me the game is going to be crawling with them and jedi knights? Makes you wonder how balanced the game will be. Maybe the solo aspects of the game will counter that tendency?

If it's the "Old Republic", then i would imagine a "Republic Trooper" would be a "good guy"; possibly even a Bounty Hunter would be some sort of "good guy" rogue.

perhaps something like:

Rogues: Bounty Hunter/Smuggler
Warriors: Republic Trooper/Sith Warrior
Warrior/something hybrid: Jedi Knight/Sith Agent
Mage/healer hybrid: Jedi Consular/Sith Inquisitor

Good point. Without thinking I normally associate Republic Troopers with the bad guys. :)

When Palaptine announces the end of the Republic and gives the troopers Order 66, the troopers change over from being "Republic Troopers" who are the good guys working under the command the Jedi, to being "Imperial Troopers" (and later Stormtroopers) who are the bad guys working under the command of the Emperor. :)

Thanks for the clarification. I remember now. :)

There is a bunch of media over at SWTor.com. I just looked at the "Diverse Worlds" trailer. I really hope they are talking about large open, immersive, explorable worlds along the lines of WoW or Planetside, not little story driven spaces like DAO.

Anyone know about combat in this game? Hopefully it's not going to be a twitchfest.

I'm surprised so far there is not much discussion generated about this game... no Star Wars fans here? ;)

Jedi Consular vs Sith Inquisitor.

I'm definitely a Star Wars fan and this might be the only game to get me to play a MMO. The thing that is really interesting is that the game is so rich in story. If you haven't seen them, check-out the Timeline at the Old Republic website. They are these mini-web comics that are telling much of the back story and are fantastic- both in content and presentation.

I'm really excited about this game, I will definitely dump wow for it. Watching the Developers Dispatch videos as they come :D

But now Mac version worries me... I'm not a fan of having to reboot just to play a game. I'd play UT3 a lot more if Ryan Gordon would just release the Mac version already, I mean, its was to be released 2 years ago according to his own blog! :/

Honestly I think, it's a wait and see situation if TOR could possible put much of a dent in WoW's subscription base. Blizzard had done just about everything right, however no matter what is done right, many people eventually hit a wall in the end game. I'm one of those. ;)

Rebooting is a necessary evil in some cases if you want to play the game. I usually only do it when I'm about to invest some time in a game so it does not seem to hurt too bad, but maybe I'm just used to it. :)

I'll take a look at at that. I've played purely PVP games, always be on your guard, have fun fighting, but the MMO I played, Planetside, had no quests. It was all takeover and hold facilities from competing outfits. That's fine. Having quests in a game complicates the cleanness of the situation. In the WoW beta I was on a PVP server. But when WoW went retail I switched to a PVE server so I could fight others when I wanted to. When I'm trying to complete a quest, I don't like breaking off a quest to have to fight an attack from other players, especially being ganked. So I'll be curious to see how this works in TOR.

Has there been any confirmation either way about TOR supporting OS X? I have a desktop PC that I use mainly for gaming, so I'll be playing the game either way, but I like to put as many things as I can on my laptop.

It looks like it might be interesting. I will wait for KOTOR III though, which will probably never happen unfortunately. As there is much more money to be made off MMO than single player games with no subscriptions.

The most recent screen shots look as though they toned down the cartoonish appearance of the game. But they really should have pushed for ultra realistic environments and characters as the KOTOR games were pushing towards. Though they may have gone for the cartoon look to distance the game from KOTOR.

So you'll wait forever? :)

I suspect I'll be disappointed with TOR but maybe I'll get a surprise. Bioware has potential although MMO is a new gig for them. WoW is the benchmark I'll use which is a pretty high standard to beat.

SW:TOR Timeline. The time line moves from left to right ending with the Treaty of Coruscant. However the entries are being filled in reverse order preceding backwards from the Treaty. So far it all of the entries are in close proximity to great galactic war of 3655 BBY (BBY= Before the Battle of Yavin as portrayed in Star Wars Episode 5: A New Hope (0BBY) where the first Death Star was destroyed). For reference Star Wars Episode One, takes place in 32 BBY. Wiki Reference for A New Hope.

ATC 0- The first archive describes the Treaty of Coruscant- 3655 BBY, a treaty of necessity between the Republic and the Sith Empire to give the Republic some breathing space after the Sith's attempt to take over the Galaxie.

BTC 7- (BTC= Before Treaty of Coruscant. Time reference used in Timeline) The second archive discusses the Breaking of the Mandalorian Blockade Republic vs Mandalorian forces.

BTC 8- Discusses the Mandalorians many of who were mercenaries and smugglers, raised on combat to improve one's self, they felt the need to take on the Jedi and formed the blockade. Some Mandalorians allied with Sith, most remained neutral? Of note, Boba Fet was a Mandalorian (40ABY).

BTC 14- discusses the Imperial agents infiltration of the Mandalorian gladiator arenas as managers. One particular champion, Mandalore was chosen as a favorite. Imperial (Sith) agents drugged the competition allowing the Mandalore to rise to the top. Imperial agents instigated the Mandalorian Blockade to allow them to trash Corusant about the time of the Treaty.

BTC 18- during the great war (18 years before the Treaty of Corusant was signed) a great battle was fought at the middle ring planet of Bothawui where 7 dozen Jedi and 4000 Republic troops took on 50000 Imperial Sith troops. Although the jedi lost, the Sith loses were so great they ended up having to retreat.

BTC 28- Onslaught of Sith Empire- describes how the Sith armada appears in the Tingle Arm on the outer rim. Unrecognized, the Republic send a small group of diplomats and escorts to meet them who are annihilated. Republic forces move to the Tingle arm but find that many of the allied planets have been turned to the Sith forcing them to withdraw. In addition, Sith influence in the Republican Senate bogs down an effective response due to politics. The Jedi did not wait for orders, but took matters into their own hands slowing the advance of the Sith.

Reminder, these dates are going backwards from top to bottom.

A jump forward in the SW universe- This weekend Spike has been showing StarWars episodes I, II, and III and of all the mistakes that were made I can't really forgive Obe Wan for letting Anakin Skywalker live. Think of how many lives were lost on this one poor judgement... :p

With the recent annoucement of steam coming to mac in the future, could this mean that SWTOR will also come to OS X? The game is being developed by BioWare AND LucasArts, and LucasArts has used steam for some time.

Just a hopefull thought.

Actually as far as Steam goes, a look at this Steam page indicates there are many MMOs listed there, but I don't know how they are being played, through Steam, or (I assume) through a platform OS, like Windows connecting directly to the game's servers. Could Bioware do a Mac native version, I guess it's possible but I've not heard of such a thing.

Anyone know if Mac Steam will make these MMOs accessible natively through the MacOS?

Not on the mac, why would i be excited?

No reason at all...

I know this has been asked before, but it will be really interesting to see how much explorable space each planet will have. Last I heard most people think it's about the size of a single WoW zone or less.

Verified TOR planets as of April2010.
Starwars.wikia.com SW List of Planets.

Tython- were the force was discovered!

Korriban- home of the Sith!

Hutta- home of the Hutts!

Ord-Mantell- civil war between Republic forces and seperatists!

Coruscant- Capital of the Republic!

Balmorra
- Few places in the galaxy have seen the peace promised by the Treaty of Coruscant so thoroughly cast aside as the world of Balmorra. Fiercely independent, this long time ally of the Republic has led the galaxy in advanced droid and weapons manufacturing. Now Balmorra’s workers live and suffer under a full Imperial occupation force.

Alderaan- Since the Republic’s inception, Alderaan’s nobility has been at the political forefront, taking a stand in the Senate for peace, freedom and unity. While Coruscant has always been considered the heart of the Republic, to some extent, Alderaan has been its soul. In the aftermath of the Treaty of Coruscant, however, Alderaan withdrew from the Republic and soon became embroiled in one of the bloodiest civil wars in the galaxy’s history. The future of this once-proud planet is heavily in doubt.

Tatooine- Far in the Outer Rim, the sands of Tatooine bake beneath the glare of two bright suns. Small pockets of barely civilized communities dot the desolate landscape, surrounded by the endless expanse of barren dunes and rocky canyons that have silently slain so many of those who ventured out into the desert. Among the small shantytowns and settlements that persist, travelers may find shelter from the brutal climate, but trust is as rare as water on this lawless world. Visitors and locals alike must constantly watch their backs in Tatooine’s townships.

Dromund-Kaas- Sith jungle world! On the remote jungle world of Dromund Kaas, the Sith have spent a thousand years building their mighty war machine to prepare for an assault on the Galaxy.

Taris- A swampy planet, the civilization annihilated by the Sith Lord Darth Malek trying to destroy Jedi Knight Shan. As a symbol of hope and redemption in the face of Sith atrocities, the Republic has begun an unlikely effort to re-colonize Taris, establishing a spaceport, military base and the beginning of settlements amid the ruins

Belsavis
- Unremarkable except, fifty years ago, while investigating the planet’s tropical rifts that seemed to defy the ice shelves in completely unnatural ways, Republic scientists stumbled upon an ancient prison constructed by the Rakatan Empire. Behind the force fields and ultra hard metals were the most terrifying prisoners in the galaxy. Republic efforts to explore and secure the dilapidated network of vaults were impeded by ferocious alien species, and nearly unstoppable droids.

Voss- Discovered by accident shortly after the Treaty of Coruscant, its rocky plateaus, unspoiled peaks and verdant forests were at first thought to be inhabited only by Gormak, a tech-savvy but pre-space flight species of extremely hostile natives. When the second, much less populous species on Voss made itself known, however, the galaxy was thrown into turmoil and the war almost restarted. Continuous war between the two groups.

I'm sure BioWare's paid close attention to Blizzard's success, and one thing Blizzard always seems to do is have very low technical specs so the most possible computers can play their games. I think that's why Old Republic looks so cartoony and low-rez - bigger install-base.

I do hope BioWare also pays attention to Blizzard's Mac support, too. I think all of Blizzard's games have always worked on Macs, and I would be OVER THE MOON if BioWare decided to support Old Republic on OS X. *fingers crossed* I certainly believe that one of the reasons WoW is so successful is because of their Mac support, but I don't have real numbers to back that up. It's just a theory. :)

I'm not sure what the status is of it anymore, but there was a thread on the official Old Republic messageboard where everyone who wanted an OS X port of the game was posting, to prove there was enough interest for BioWare to bother. I'm not sure BioWare ever actually paid attention to it, though, and I haven't been in there in months. So like I said, I don't know the status of it now.

TOR Combat Video and discussion of combat at SWStrategies.com. First MMO with "cover" abilities. Reactive, coordinated combat animations.

Great video! I'm not sure if the combat is revolutionary though. I think TOR is basically fusing FPS action with a MMORPG environment. You can engage multiple targets like Halo, Battlefied, COD, etc. but you also get to do "quests". So I would say this is evolutionary more than revolutionary. But either way it totally kicks ass! :D
