I know the Balkans - especially the former Yugoslavia - pretty well - having worked in them at various times over the past twenty years, mostly monitoring elections.

@SoggyCheese: When you are in Montenegro, I'd suggest that you make time to visit Kotor - it is a wonderfully atmospheric town with a stunning harbour, and was part of the Venetian trading empire.

The Montenegrin coast is spectacular. In 2008, I observed an election in Montenegro, but managed to spend a day in Kotor - I hired a car (and driver) to get there - before I returned home, and I thought it terrific.

@macquariumguy: Your trip to Croatia includes the Istrian peninsula in Croatia: I once spent some time in that peninsula observing an election, - I loved it, and promised myself a return visit - and I strongly recommend that you try to visit Pula, which has one of the finest - and perfectly constructed amphitheatres in existence - it dates from the time of the Roman Republic - and is still, improbably, in perfect condition with flawless sight lines and exceptional acoustics. In 2000, when I was there, - not long after the war - they opened it especially for us, it was amazing to have the privilege of walking the arena, and prowling the stands - but, these days, it is used for concerts and is readily accessible.

Split and Dubrovnik (I observed elections in those regions as well), must be seen; spent several hours in Diocletian's Palace in Split if you can; in the company of two colleagues, from the Netherlands and from Germany, I even attended Mass in an old Roman temple in the grounds of Diocletian's Palace, which is now a Catholic Church - attending a service in a building that has had some sort of divine function for the best part of 1700 years is awesome.

I hope both of you enjoy your respective trips - they sound wonderful.

Back home after a 10 hour drive. For fatigue, if in a pinch, I highly recommend 5 Hour Energy. It works great, keeping me alert without any bad side or residual effects. It has the same caffeine as a cup of coffee, plus other ingredients. I don't take it regularly.

We will have a car in Rovinj and I'm planning to take us on a day trip in a big circle with Pula at one end. There are a couple old towns on the interior that look to be worth visiting also.

Our hotel in Split advertises itself as being in the old palace, but we're only there two nights before boarding for our cruise.

The cruise looks to be very nice. It's a 40 passenger boat but looks as well equipped as one could ask.

The next couple weeks at work are going to be hell.

Wow. Looks fantastic. Makes me want to go now :D

@Scepticalscribe we are going to take in Kotor. Looks amazing. Really looking forward to sailing in right up the "fjord" (for want of a better word).

To describe the 'palace' of Diocletian in Split as a "Palace" is a bit of a misnomer. This is because it is really a 'palace' that was built to sort of contain a town within its walls, so it is an extraordinary structure, with a warren of streets, buildings - and an amazing courtyard, some of which were possibly constructed a few centuries later - in its midst.

Enjoy staying there - this is 'living history', a place I think is incredible.

Kotor is amazing - you'll love the extraordinary experience of sailing right into the harbour which is spectacular.

I have multiple trips planned this summer including a wedding in Cincinnati and a conference in San Antonio. But the big holiday is going to be a ten day steamboat ride down the Mississippi. We start in Memphis and end in Louisville. Blues and BBQ. I can't wait!

That sounds like a great idea.

That sounds interesting. After doing a 2 week river cruise in Europe, which we really enjoyed, we are considering the Mississippi, but realize the scenery will be much different.

My mother had already been to every continent. I've been...around. We thought this sounded like something fun and different.

If - on their travels - anyone come across a gumbo - or jambalaya - recipe that is more or less authentic, interesting and tasty and recommended, (and not torture to prepare and cook - I am a greedy and contented cook, not a masochistic one) it shall be gratefully received by your humble scribe.

Honey, I'm in the dead center of gumbo country. I have a great recipe I'll send you this evening when I get home. The only part of gumbo that's grueling is making the roux. You need time and stamina, cause all you do is stir over low heat. Burn the roux, start all over.

We've already been to Arizona and California (Phoenix, LA and San Diego) in April, in June we'll go to Edinburgh, Scotland for a short trip, and in the fall we have planned a week in Tuscany (near Cortona as that is my favorite place in Tuscany by far). We might squeeze in a city trip to either New York or some city in Europe as well later this year, but not sure about that yet.

How cool is that?

My grateful thanks to you - these are legendary dishes I would love to try.

Tuscany and the UK rank as two of my favorite vacation destinations.

Red beans and rice has become one of my favorites, and is the easiest thing in the world.

Imho, which you are free to disagree with, ;) Popeye's (fast food) has, besides outstanding fried chicken, among the best red beans and rice for purchase. :):) I recently cooked up a pot of black beans and ham which was oh so good.

Popeye's is not bad for fast food. It's also outrageously expensive and filled with grease. Theirs were the first red beans and rice I ever had. Now I just make em myself.

This probably takes more explanation, but these are the basics.

Gumbo
Rue (oil and flour -2TBS each) until it’s dark brown
2 lbs shrimp
2 Cups chopped okra
1 T filet
2 chopped onions
2T oil
2T flour
1 can tomatoes
2 QT water
1 bay leaf
salt
3 pods garlic
red pepper or Tabasco
Okra and onion in oil
Add tomato when nearly cooked
Finally add water, garlic, bay, salt and pepper

I protest! ;) A two piece Popeye's meal with a side of red beans and rice and a biscuit is about $6, not outrageous at all. I can't speak to the excessive grease charge, it tastes pretty good. :)

Tabasco instead of Louisiana Hot Sauce? Sacrilege!

I do joke of course:) but not really :D

I'm going to Seattle in July to visit my sister. I'm looking forward to going to the Tacoma Car Museum. We also have a kayaking trip planned and evidently my parents have rented a boat.

Assuming my girlfriend and I can coordinate time off, we're looking to schedule a cruise, probably to Bermuda. I hate cruises but the all inclusive nature makes things easy.

We'll also be spending some of our weekends at my parents beach house in RI or her parents house on Nantucket which always makes a nice, easy, and cheap getaway.

We do a lot of smaller trips, and we tend to do them all year, not just summer. In the next few months we're headed to New Smyrna, the Keys, Disney, Universal, we live 2 blocks from the ocean so it's kind of always vacation here :D

Love that part of the world. Heading to Venice for a week for vacation this year. If you have the chance check out Bosnian coast. Amazing place and people.

If you are looking for a vacation spot, I would be remiss to not mention my part of the world. Destin, Florida has, in my experience, the most beautiful beaches and water in the world. Right now tourist season is starting to ramp up. In a couple of weeks we should have 100x the locals in vacationers in the area. Don't worry, we have plenty of room. Traffic does tend to suck, just get out and bike or walk around, the area is not that big at all.

If you want to see the locals, we all head over to Watercolor and Seaside, FL to get away from the tourists when they start to drive us crazy. Head on over to The Red Bar in Grayton Beach, bring cash ( they don't take cards ) but not that much, it is great food / atmosphere for a great price. Try not to harass the celebrities the hide out there.

Late night New Orleans, red beans and rice with a side of any cheap red wine and I'm truly at the happiest I can be.

Junior wants to go to Ireland this year and my wife wants to cruise so I think we'll end up on one of those cruises that do the British Isles in August. After that I'm likely going to PCS to Ft. Drum so in the spring we'll probably do NYC and junior and I will camp a couple days in the finger lakes.
