No, but doing nothing guarantees the brand will die. Ironically Rovio is putting out an IPO next year on the strength of having created a brand and wants everyone's money. Hopefully they're more innovative in the plush toy market and their Angry Birds movie becomes a hit, because their current strategy when it comes to games has no long-term profitability.

Agreed, but then how much can you do with the basic premise? Angry birds racekarts?? Hmmm....

You're right. I bought the game and played through 3-4 bloodlines before getting bored and I haven't touched it since. I might try out IB2 since I'm sure it'll cost less than a pizza. If I'm really hungry though, I might just go for the pizza.

Now that is beign a bit dimissive of my post and the info. There always is a subjective aspect to these things, I really enjoy the game and it took me a lot more bloodlines to defeat the godking. More to defeat the deathless. As they say YMMV. Plus you live in LA if I understand your avatar caption correctly so I am sure you could afford both a pizza and IB2 if you wanted to. Even here where I am the pizza is a lot more I will get both. I love IB, but still would never match Skyrim:The Elder Scrolls. :D

Usually what happens is LTD comes in and says that Apple will destroy Nintendo and that's it's already happening.

The only point I make is that if Apple wants to kill Nintendo, they have to have games that are better than Nintendo's. Then I make fun of all the crap on iOS. I understand that a lot of this crap are staples of bored housewives everywhere and I'm not denying there's a market for them, but a farm skinner box, or cutting fruit with your finger, or flinging birds at pigs X number of times is not gonna keep people from buying Super Mario 3D Land when it drops next week.

We'll see, my personal issue with the 3DS is I really don't like the 3D part. Oh it's cool you don't need glasses, and I liked Avatar and Tron:Legacy in 3D, though some other films were just so so with it. However I just find the 3DS far too finicky in terms of the angle I have to hold it at. I suppose 3D has more of a potential in future, especially for games (movies meh) but for me it's not quite there yet.

Hmm I think I'll start a new thread.

Angry Birds 2: Pigs Revenge
this time you flick the pigs at the birds

jk

They can do stuff. It's just that Rovio is creatively bankrupt. Their CEO is focused more on hyping up the IPO by telling everyone they're gonna be bigger than Disney than he is on the actual product.

Zynga is even worse than Rovio.

I was kidding. But it is funny to me that any iOS game that costs more than a pizza is considered too expensive.

I think we can let the market be the judge of that.

Market 1) £30 games selling in their tens of millions, on dedicated machines
Market 2) 69p games selling in their millions on convergent machines

As the right honourable poster above me - if these games could be sold for a higher price they would be.

(I also own a bunch of those games. Some are indeed blatant rip-offs of existing IPs, something I thought you would feel strongly for considering your posts on copycat iPhones and iPods?)

Using Angry Birds as an example. How do you account for how many of the those downloads are only the free game and how many are the ad based android version.

Also Rovio lacks real talent. They Have made 4 versions of the same game and worked on only that.

Take the Fruit Ninja guys(halfbrick studios) who have games on different platforms . Raskulls was my favorite game released on xbla last year.

He's only against that stuff when Apple is on the other side of the fence. It's ok if Apple copies.

Agreed. Quite a few of *LTD*s posts require an element of doublethink to understand them. Ironic really considering what Apple used to stand for.

Sure, but in this specific case it's not actually Apple who is copying. ;)
I guess you are right there. And to be fair, there are a handful of actual decent games on iOS and some great Scumm engine remakes such as Beneath a Steel Sky.

True, but he's promoting them as being better than the originals.
I just find it funny how someone can be so opposed to "plagiarism" and then not, when it's on a platform he likes. What's the word for that?

Where is the litigation aimed at shutting down these "rip-offs"? Where are the IP court cases?

Gameplay concepts and mechanics are not protected by copyright. As long as the biter company doesn't reuse the same exact art, story, characters, they're legally in the clear.

But you shouldn't need litigation to see that these companies are creatively bankrupt and their MO is take existing IP, change enough to not get sued, release on iOS.

Bingo. Just look at Gameloft's output.

Red Dead Redemption- Six Guns
HALO series - NOVA series
Uncharted - Shadow Guardian
Starcraft - Starfront
Zelda - Sacred Odyssey
Final Fantasy - Eternal Legacy
Diablo series - Dungeon Hunter series
GTA series - Gangstar series
Modern Warfare 2 - Modern Combat 2
Mario Kart - Shrek Kart
God of War - Hero of Sparta
World of Warcraft - Order and Chaos
Burnout series - Asphalt series

They go way beyond existing in the same genre and rip off game mechanics (which you can't trademark, as you mentioned).
And these are major players in the iOS and Android market.

If handheld gaming is going the iOS/Android way then i am quite disappointed and sad about it.

Because almost every iOS and android game i have played, and trust me i have played almost every big and popular title plus high rating less popular ones, the story sucks so hard in the rip-offs compared to the originals, the touch screen controls make me want to throw the phone down after few minutes, and the lack of replay-ability really doesn't help much.

Sure the PSP has its issues but i hope the vita takes off. They really need to produce all the big name titles for it. MGS HD pack, uncharted, batman, NFS run , revelations etc etc. Some really good titles can justify its cost.

Sure an iPhone or a galaxy can be multi-taskers but i am not the type to enjoy half-baked everything. I would rather take less content which is well developed and easy to control.

Subjective opinion, anyway I have quite a few games and have not played any of the "rip-offs" (a few ports like NFS:Shift but again exceptions) , and you obviously have not played the many original and clever games available on the market.

Like...

Modern Combat? A CoD rip-off with bad controls and no story at all.

Gangstar? GTA rip-off which makes me laugh sometimes with the absurdity it portrays in the game.

9mm? Max Payne rip-off. Sucked so much i deleted it after 15 mins of play.

Hero of sparta? Oh please...it's got nothing on god of war.

Backstab? They can only dream of matching assasin's creed. Will never happen.

No MGS rip-off yet thankfully.

And many more.

The "original" and "clever" games you are talking about are more of a casual ones in nature. Like battleheart, or tiny wings or gun bros etc etc. They are good but nothing replaces a PSP game.

Plus maybe you have augmented fingers but mine start hurting after 10 mins of constant sliding the D-pads and pushing all those buttons on a touch screen frantically so it registers something at least...

Unless there is a control pad available to allow tactical controls for these smartphones, and actual real ports of the good PSX/Xbox/PC games are available, i fail to agree that smartphone gaming is anywhere near console/handheld console gaming in terms of quality. Quantity maybe, quality; not any time soon.

Do you really want me to answer those questions. you might not like the answer

Yes please. I'd like to know what Skyrim has ripped off, because from playing it for 3 days straight I have to say, I've never seen anything like it.
