I shouldn’t have waited to downgrade.

Faceid is a bad solution to a problem that doesn’t exist
The notch is a security issue for those that need the vpn notification on the status bar
Having laser beams burned into your eyeball is not good
I can see the pen tile matrix in the Oled
Brightness level in direct sun no longer an issue
Driving and unlocking to view gps directions are no longer a life or death health hazzard

The 8/8+ are the best phones apple has ever made

- FaceID isn't a solution, it's an advancement in that its false positive rate is much smaller than that of TouchID.
- There's a lot of things that would be better in the small status bar real estate. Doesn't make my XS worse as a phone.
- You'd have to hold the IR projector in an iPhone 1mm away from your eyeball for 17 minutes to do any sort of damage.
- Impressive.
- Never had an issue with the sun but I guess brighter is better.
- Not even sure what you mean with that one. Turning off attention aware features means you don't have to take your eyes off the road. Personally, I set my destination before I drive and my phone doesn't lock until I reach my destination.

Gratz on your new phone.

At first it took a little adjustment but after using it for a little while I wouldn't have it any other way. Nothing wrong with TouchID if that's your thing but FaceID will eventually make it obsolete.

OLED works great in the bright sun on my end, eventually this too will be the standard going forward.

As for FaceID in the car, I had an issue with this at first but moved the phone holder closer to the drivers side and it reads my face pretty easily. I have found that any father than arms length can be a problem.

This isn't to put down the 8+ it was a wonderful phone for me as well.

I disagree with this one, I would pick the iPhone 4s.

I see this a lot, but I always wonder if this was really a problem for most users.

Personally, I was never worried about the false positive rate with Touch ID.

Xs Max brightness on a white background = 652 nits.

Contrast ratio from displaymate in high ambient lightning.
140 – 164

Excellent

6 Plus at 556 nits is 123. Excellent.

Therefore, contrast ratio is better on the Max making it easier to see in direct sunlight.

100% agreed. Purchased a 8+ in November it’s a great phone.

Not a chance. Face ID is awesome, quick and secure. I'll keep my Max, it's the best phone Apple ever made. I've ever once noticed the notch. My eye Dr says the phone won't hurt my eyes. But I'm sure glad you found something you like.

I definitely prefer the X compared to my previous 7+ and 6. I'm used to the notch, so don't really notice it. YMMV

Faceid is a bad solution to a problem that doesn’t exist

Face ID is the future, rather you choose to support or not, is your own prerogative. But it’s far more secure in terms of over touch ID, it’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be, nor was touch ID either.

The notch is a security issue for those that need the vpn notification on the status bar

This isn’t true. And I really ever read/hear any complaints about this whatsoever due to the notch.

Having laser beams burned into your eyeball is not good

That’s interesting, do you know anybody specifically that where Face ID has caused damage to their eyes? I don’t, and we certainly don’t have any conclusive evidence of long-term affects affecting anyone either.

Driving _and_ using your phone in the first place is negligent behavior and you shouldn’t be doing it. It doesn’t matter with Face ID or not, leave your phone alone when driving in the car.

The 8/8+ are the best phones apple has ever made

Subjective. I believe the 8 is a ‘great’ phone, and it doesn’t have a lot of hardware issues, where this phone matured nicely over the years, but you’ll _never_ have the majority agree with you when you say ‘best’ either, that’s more a blanket statement.

It's great news that you've got a phone you enjoy. Phone satisfaction is somewhat subjective after all.

That said, many of your posted reasons aren't just opinion, they're either untrue or misleading.

Many (most?) people find FaceID to better a better experience than TouchID. It's less intrusive, especially when apps/websites are looking for keychain access -- no longer do you have to adjust your grip just to activate TouchID; FaceID kicks in immediately and works seamlessly.

The notch is a security issue for those that need the vpn notification on the status bar
I require VPN access. You can still see it with a swipe down from the upper right hand corner. I, too, would prefer to have a couple more data points across the top (battery percentage, etc), but this is not nearly compelling enough to stay with old tech.

Having laser beams burned into your eyeball is not good
Agreed. Good thing our phones don't fire laser beams at us.

I suspect you were mischaracterizing the IR grid that is used for FaceID/depth sensing ... but as others have pointed out, it's nowhere near powerful enough to be damaging.

This is akin to saying 'having rocket engines blasting in your ears is not good'. Yes, having sound that's too loud pumped into your ears is bad, but we all agree the sound volume coming from an iPhone's earpiece (or AirPods, etc) is not enough to damage us. While we can turn the volume up high enough to be potentially damaging, no one suggests iPhones are a health risk because of it, and the IR grid can't have it's power adjusted .. it stays far below any risk threshold. No eye risk here.

I can see the pen tile matrix in the Oled
That's surprising. Even if you can see it without ocular assistance, you should also be able to see the matrix on an 8 Plus (https://www.idownloadblog.com/2017/11/02/iphone-x-oled-pixel-layout/).

My XS Max has no problem in direct sun either. Sounds like we're all winners.

You must unlock your phone differently than I do.

Love my XS Max, and am eagerly looking forward to the XI Max (or whatever it's going to be called). :)

I agree with the OP. The X series iPhones (in my opinion) are a disaster in too many ways. Yeah, yeah, they're faster than the previous models, but the X series are fundamentally flawed.
In my opinion, for the last 2 years, iPhones have been crap.
(And I use an iPhone)

Ok? So you think the iPhone X is a ‘disaster, it’s fundamentally flawed’ and it’s ‘crap’, but yet you don’t back your statements why you believe that, which doesn’t tell anyone anything.

I like my 8+ and I loved my max. I had to get rid of it due to headaches. There was literally nothing I liked more on the 8+ than the max except for the fact it doesn’t give me headaches.

I'm a big fan and proud owner of the 8 Plus myself, and I've been very critical of FaceID, even questioning its safety myself, but please understand that FaceID is not "having laser beams burned into your eyeball". If you have to use hyperbole to make a point then you don't really have a valid point.

kepler20b seems to have a lot of hate going by their post history. I also found this post regarding the iPhone 8:

dude they launched an iphone 8 which is basically teh same design theyve had for 3 straight years.

simply put: they are getting lazy and only concerned about maximizing profit by reducing manufacturing costs.

But now it's the best iPhone ever. Apparently.

I don't know about anyone else, but for me the real difference between my 8+ and my XS Max is the overall *feel* and *vibe* that each device has when using it. There are, indeed, compelling pros and cons to particular features of each phone. But that's not what I'm noticing (usually) when I use the 8+ or the Max. I'm really centered on an overall experiential feeling that has to do with ease of use/convenience, satisfaction (visual, tactile and more) and other factors. The phones are quite similar from a technical standpoint, but my intuitive gut feelings say each phone is unique. Indeed, I like them very much, and they *feel* sufficiently different that I have no problem owning and enjoying them both.

Oh FFS!! Same story every time a new iteration of iOS comes out "buggiest version ever" "why can't we go back to iOS X?" "I still am on iOS (or MacOS) X" etc. etc. etc.

Two of my closest friends have iPhones, one an SE which he's very happy with and another is quite pleased with her 8 plus.

The X, XR and Xs are great too, just not for me now for various reasons.
