I shouldn’t have waited to downgrade.
It's great news that you've got a phone you enjoy. Phone satisfaction is somewhat subjective after all.
That said, many of your posted reasons aren't just opinion, they're either untrue or misleading.
Faceid is a bad solution to a problem that doesn’t exist
Many (most?) people find FaceID to better a better experience than TouchID. It's less intrusive, especially when apps/websites are looking for keychain access -- no longer do you have to adjust your grip just to activate TouchID; FaceID kicks in immediately and works seamlessly.
The notch is a security issue for those that need the vpn notification on the status bar
I require VPN access. You can still see it with a swipe down from the upper right hand corner. I, too, would prefer to have a couple more data points across the top (battery percentage, etc), but this is not nearly compelling enough to stay with old tech.
Having laser beams burned into your eyeball is not good
Agreed. Good thing our phones don't fire laser beams at us.
I suspect you were mischaracterizing the IR grid that is used for FaceID/depth sensing ... but as others have pointed out, it's nowhere near powerful enough to be damaging.
This is akin to saying 'having rocket engines blasting in your ears is not good'. Yes, having sound that's too loud pumped into your ears is bad, but we all agree the sound volume coming from an iPhone's earpiece (or AirPods, etc) is not enough to damage us. While we
can turn the volume up high enough to be potentially damaging, no one suggests iPhones are a health risk because of it, and the IR grid
can't have it's power adjusted .. it stays far below any risk threshold. No eye risk here.
I can see the pen tile matrix in the Oled
That's surprising. Even if you can see it without ocular assistance, you should also be able to see the matrix on an 8 Plus (

Brightness level in direct sun no longer an issue
My XS Max has no problem in direct sun either. Sounds like we're all winners.
Driving and unlocking to view gps directions are no longer a life or death health hazzard
You must unlock your phone differently than I do.
Love my XS Max, and am eagerly looking forward to the XI Max (or whatever it's going to be called).
