No it is not. Android phones now have finger print sensor under the screen so they do not need a notch on the screen. That is the future (actually it is already here).

Camera? Personally, I would prefer a micro-chin up top rather than a notch.

FaceID is much more seamless than fingerprint-sensors. You just use your phone and almost everytime it just opens without input or thought.

I used a iPhone 7 yesterday (my phone is Xr), and I had to smile when I realized that there is no going back to home buttons and Touch ID once you are used to faceid and gesture based navigation.

Aside from your family no one is touching your phone. Faceid is a stupid "solution" to a problem that doesnt exist. It presented the user with a slower and more dangerous method to unlock their phone. If your car does nto have carplay, or you refuse to use siri and have every conversation you have in your car beamed to apple, faceid while driving is downright hazardous and life threatening.

Often times I am traveling to somwhere im familiar with, but not so much that I dont need the gps. So i'll know the exit and want to confirm the next turn i'm gonna make before the app tells me. Using faceid in this scenario is a joke. I've tried it many times before and it is a stupid stupid joke.

Whereas having touchid my eyes are literally NEVER off the road because I can use my finger to unlock and riase the phone. success rate is at 1000%. It takes less than 1 second to confirm that after exit 68 i am looking to stay on the right hand lane.
You shouldn’t be interacting with your phone whilst driving regardless of its unlock method. If you need to reset the satnav then pulling over is the only option or get a passenger to do it. This is why mobile phone use while driving is illegal in most developed countries now.

This comment has _zero_ relation to anything with the iPhone/face ID in this thread, the OP was referring to that they didn’t like Face ID, ‘android phones’ aren’t even relevant to this discussion, as we/others are discussing the iPhone and the relevancy of Face ID of how others like/dislikes, advantages/disadvantages, ect.

As for the ‘future comment’, that was referring to what Tim Cook said Face ID is the future for the for Apple, not sure why you’re interjecting anything about an android device at all.

It’s great that iPhone 8 & 8+ are still on sale at a reasonable price with the classic time-tested home button form factor, great cameras (especially the 8+) fast processors, True Tone and wireless charging.

XR owner here and glad I’ve got one but glad that we have choices over which sort of phones that we have (excepting the weird gap for SE and 6-8 users who want a Face ID upgrade and a smaller screen).

I now know 4 people who bought iPhone 8/8+ who wish they would've gotten the X or waited for the Xs Max. I don't see any reason to stick with the 8/8+ unless you can't afford the X series phones or are stuck in the past. Face ID is a complete non-issue and much more convenient 95% of the time compared to Touch ID.

Not everybody wants or sees the need to spend £1k+ on a mobile phone mate. It’s not about being stuck in the past or being poor. For some of us who are lucky enough to buy any phone we want it’s about seeing the value in a product and for me the 8+ was the best phone I could get for the money last October.

There’s nothing old fashioned or inferior about the iPhone 8 it’s just not the phone choice of many of the tech snobs here. Out in the real world nobody cares what iPhone you are using.

If the 2019 and early 2020 iPhones have issues, then yeah, I would upgrade my 6S to the 8. The A11 is the first Ax with Apple custom GPU, so personally it would be supported “better” than rest of the “old” form factor (iPhone 7 and older).

But to put things more seriously, the classic iPhone look and form factor does look dated nowadays. Literally even budget Android phones, and I mean the ones in $100 range, are already sporting the “bezelless notched” look, even if they have a chin. It is definitely more eye catching than the traditional full bezel iPhone 6/7/8 look. The iPhone 8 is becoming the old non retina MacBook Air, it’s still great and reliable, but the design doesn’t hold up anymore.

Considering the vast majority of iPhones in use day to day are the older classic design I don’t think it really matters to most if the exterior of the phone looks dated to certain tech enthusiasts online. I think people here see phones very differently to the general public and are perhaps a bit more vain in terms of needing to have the latest and greatest.

Apt comparison.

Yes I do agree the Touch ID iPhones look dated compared to the Face ID phones.

On the contrary, the lay people are the ones caring about these things, how the phone look, color, etc. People are not minding the classic look now because the new look is still fairly recent, only started by the less than 2 years old iPhone X. Obviously most consumers do still sport the traditional iPhone look.

But go to any store and you can see the plethora of Android phones, even the $100 ones (eg Redmi 7, Realme phones), with the bezelless look and gradient of colors. For a consumer, those are really eye catching. The glass of the iPhone 8 does help on the shininess part, but its bezels are becoming a minority nowadays, and in the sea of the new phones, that bezels become a sore thumb sticking out, looking outdated.

Most people here won’t mind since many look for specific features like TouchID, but the lay consumer walking by a store will definitely gravitate towards those newer-looking phones, including the XR/XS.

As you say, aesthetics aren’t an issue at the moment as the iPhone 8/8+ is still a popular phone. Naturally notch devices will see a larger adoption rate in the future as more people get them but right now I don’t see a huge issue with the classic iPhone look.

This is really a subjective opinion for both of us and we’ll have different experiences with our perception of dated. I haven’t had your experience so reserve the right to disagree on the severity of this perception. I still get compliments on my 8+ from time to time and was even asked if it was the ‘latest’ iPhone at a conference at the NEC last week lol. I found that amusing to say the least.

I love that you all have dug into my posting history.

Truth hurt so much that you spent time researching. I'm truly grateful.

As for the thread:

1/ Those claiming faceid is a better solution: you are just biased and wrong. No one aside from people that work for the government or corporations carrying sensitive trade/secret data needs the extra verification level that faceid provides.

Aside from your family no one is touching your phone. Faceid is a stupid "solution" to a problem that doesnt exist. It’s always amusing when people say others opinions are wrong. :D

And you shouldn’t be using your phone while driving regardless.

hi.

you live in the bubble world.

I live in the real one.

I’d disagree to an extent.

You said Face ID is ‘much more convenient 95%’ of the time compared to touch ID, I’d say that’s not entirely true, Face ID poses its own issues not unlocking successfully when laying down, the phone has to be at a certain angle, and can’t be laying flat on a surface to unlock either, so that’s not really all that convenient most of the time given those are daily encounters, where touch ID would have issues with damp fingers for the most part.

No you live in a world clearly with no regard for human life...shame you’ve not been caught if you do as you say you do...you certainly wouldn’t be driving if you were locked away which you would be if you killed somebody

The notch iPhones will only be adopted by people who need that Apple logo on their phone.

Other Apple users will move away from Apple because Apple has fallen behind while asking more money.

Android phones are now the ones leading innovation and technology. The iPhone X was nothing more then ap

You really think Apple will keep having the notch on their far more expensive phones when the competition has moved beyond that?

If you cannot understand how Android phones influences what Apple does (the iPhone X was basically Apple trying to “android” their iPhone’s), then that is on you.

Not quite, you interjected android into this discussion, more so in this thread, which had no relevance to begin with. My point being, we were discussing the iPhone in general, until you decided to bring android phones into this, which again, doesn’t have any relevance. So technically, it is on you.

You should get an iPhone, a notched one.

You sound like you really want one, can’t blame you iPhones are great phones.

Premium iPhones do sell a lot more than premium android phones, must be a reason for that.

Well enjoy whatever Phone your currently using.

All I’ve noticed among people I know is that pricing has just forced a new strategy. People either buy the mid tier offering (XR) or they stick to older iPhones for now. I think the trend for buying last year’s device will continue to grow as better deals appear too. The hype for the latest and greatest appears to have gone where I’m from and that’s purely down to price and the fact iPhones change very little year on year. People still like iPhones though and it’s the preferred OS with most of my friends and associates.
