Now that is an interesting idea! Problem, you still will need to JB touch to receive calls via skype or does skype work with push?

I don't think push was really designed to be able to answer calls. Either way, however, the iPhone disconnects from WiFi when the screen is locked and the MiFi has a limited battery life (so you'd only be able to roam 4 hours at a time with it).

I work in downtown S.F. and AT&T data service is next to unusable. I get Edge all day in the office (20th floor). Got tired of not being about to use my iPhone and MacBook pro I went ahead and got a Sprint MiFi. It's been a day now and the connection is ROCK SOLID. My iPhone and MacBook is online all day now with no drops. To my surprise, it even works on BART (underground train), all the way from home to work.
On top of that, I can now use my SlingBox app, Simpify Media 2 app (entire iTunes library on your iPhone), & Wunder Radio all day long. I got the MiFi for FREE from my local Sprint store (just ask for it and you'll get it free). No activation fee, no rebates, all I had to pay was $14 tax and I'm out the door with a new MiFi. My company get a service discount which brings the monthly service from $60 to $45. It's worth every penny! Now that I have both AT&T and Sprint for the road, I'll may not ever run into a dead zone.

Can you tell I am very happy. :) :)

I got one of these about a week ago, BEST thing I've ever bought, it works so good, I get great speeds, way better than tethering with my iPhone, and it's also nice to have a portable WiFi hotspot! I can't say anything but great things about this device, soooo awesome!

I also have AT&T and this MiFi, I couldn't be happier. A Sprint MiFi 2200 paired with a 13" uMBP is THE WAY TO GO!

Yes, it's called "get an iPod Touch."

Most of us already own an iPhone (this is an iPhone forum), so it would make more sense to use the iPhone that we have already purchased instead of going out and buying an iPod Touch. Plus, the iPod Touch does not have a camera or video camera, among other things that the 3GS does that the Touch does not do.

iFi, uFi, weallFi for WiFi.

I called one Sprint dealer and they didn't know about getting it for free. Could you tell me where you got it, and maybe give a phone number. This sounds great and I want to get on board. Thanks for the cool info...:D

I walked into the downtown S.F. Sprint store and asked for it for free. That's it! The store is on Mission St. between 4th & 5th street.

I bought it mainly to use with my iPhone in the office where there is no service or poor Edge if any. I just happen to have an iPod Touch too. With both device, I can stream and Twitter, text, etc all at the same time. :)

I just don't quite get this set-up. Isn't this really expensive? You're basically paying another network to make your iPhone work because the AT&T network is really poor. Why not just cut out the middle man and use a touch with the MiFi? Heck, if I were you, I'd just switch to Sprint. You must really love your iPhone, even if it doesn't work for you most of the time.

This is sort of like a man who buys a Porsche because he really would love to ride in a Porsche. But, the Porsche he buys has no wheels. So, in order to ride around in his Porsche he place it on top of a flatbed truck and he hires someone to drive him around while he sits in his Porsche.

But you can't connect your iPod Touch, iPhone & MacBook all at the same time. MiFi 2200 connects up to 5 devices.

Yes you can. I use my verizon expresscard in my mac, and set the mac to ad hoc network, then use my iphone through the mac.

iPod Touch 3rd Gen with Camera/Video + MiFi + Skype > iPhone with crappy AT&T 3G connection

But the problem is that the MacBook has to stay on for the other devices to be connected.

The problem is I am still under AT&T contract. :(

I think it only costs $300 to buy your way out of your AT&T contract. If it's been more than 12 months, I think it's only $200 (maybe less), which is a lot less than continuing to pay the $80 per month.

BUT, you only want to end your AT&T contract if you have another way to make calls. You might use Skype, or you might just use one of those cheap little prepaid flip phones or GoPhone.

Damn, that would be slow. Five devices sharing one 3G connection. And you thought your iPhone was slow on 3G.

EV-DO Rev A can easily pull over 2 Mb/s (assuming that Sprint's network is as good as Telecom NZ's). Chances are you're not going to be using all five devices at once, and even if you were you'd still get around 400-500 kb/s per device which is plenty for most mobile use.

I just love this post.
I like the Sprint gadget you got. It has some great potential. I'm glad it's working out for you.

Tell me, between the touch, iphone and Mac at your place of business, do you do any actual work? If not, are they hiring? I may want to switch jobs so I can entertain myself all day and get paid.:)

You mention above the problem is this and the problem is that, but I don't see these points as problems just scenarios you would like to have. What I see as the real issue is your self absorption in your portable Apple traveling entertainment center.

Secondly, it appears with all your but the problem is statements above, you really don't see what the problem is. The Porsche example above should give you a clue.

Edit: I hope your not like one of these people I see on the No. 6 train in the morning when I sit down next to them, all nervous and constantly shuffling their technology every 5 minutes, with the giant Bose head phones, thick black glasses, laptop open and staring blindly at the screen. When its their stop, Oops there goes the iphone flying across the floor. Eek!

MiFi is interesting but I don't get the appeal considering how expensive the service is. Verizon MiFi wants $60 a month plus they limit the download data to 5GB and the download speeds are only like 1.5 Megs. I have read that some people have used MiFi to replace their cable internet, sorry but I just don't understand that considering my home cable internet is 10 Meg service. I could never go back to 1.5 Meg service.

I had thought about a MiFi so I could use the Slingbox app on my iPhone but think the 5GB download limit would be used up to fast and I would end up paying more than the $60 a month. This stuff really needs to get less expensive.

so wait

1 walk into Sprint (say give me) and =mifi & 5GB $60 a month

AT&T I pay $70 oh lets say I went the $99 plan
now $175 cancel att
walk around with Mifi labtop and touch or use 3gs as touch just not seeing this. I mean glad you like but I will stick with my 3gs and att

Concerning the Slingbox, someone estimated on the Slingcommunity forum that if you were to get the optimal speed of 500kbps and you used all 5 gig from ATT, it would equate to 22.22 hours of slinging.

I did not do the math so I don't know how accurate that its. I know I never get 500kbps.

Someone explain to me the point of paying 720 bucks a year when you can browse great on your phone?

Please all, LEARN TO READ THE OP!. He said he barely gets a signal at work... is that too hard to comprehend? If he can afford it, whats the big deal? Holy cow the hate on here is unbareable. I can get to the same place driving a POS van vs. someone in a Farrari, does that mean the Farrari owner shouldn't have bought it?

I've been considering one of these with the lowest priced data plan (Sprint) or even the pay as you plan (Verizon)

I pay for a USB modem on AT&T ($60 a month) and I really only use it 3-4 times a month. (in addition to the data plan on the iPhone)

Everything you say you want to do on your three devices could be done on your MBP alone, including unlimited multitasking. Why not just get a dumb phone and use your MBP with a USB dongle, then do all your slingboxing and skyping etc. on the MBP. Your setup just makes no sense.

I'm sorry, you're a dick. You're judging him because he has several Apple devices? Get over yourself man.
