Just a bit of hopefully interesting information: I've taken apart a Lithium Ion battery and the smell it gives is fruity like juicyfruit - very very strong sweet smell.

These estimates look fine to me too.

my fiancee has an ipad air 2 and she says it has a strange smell of late.

She said smelly like acid, like a leaking battery smell.

She was using it with a 3rd party bluetooth keyboard so told her just use tablet incase was the keyboard.

smell still there with tablet alone.
It is not in a case just bare.

She says the battery life not great either but that is due to having bluetooth on 24/7 if you ask me.
Always using the keyboard and bluetooth can drain battery.

any thoughts guys/gals?

Hi. Both my iPad and iMac are emitting toxic fumes that give me headaches and irritate my throat to the point I cannot breath. Any advise of what to do and if I should be looking for compensation?

Only use them in well ventilated areas to begin with.

Then, I think the first step would be to have the affects verified by a lab. In other words, proof that toxicity is being emitted. Second, that they are at levels above considered safe by the country or state in which you live.

Have all that documented and then contact Apple.

There's this saying that extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs to back it up; and that sort of applies whenever a newly created accounts heads straight to claiming going for compensation for a major problem, that no one else is having.

In this case it's two completely different Apple products, and yet you are going to it being Apple's fault; the odds of it actually being two such completely different products sort of per design being faulty in the same way is extremely low.

So you really need to give us more here…

Like how you got the equipment, how long ago, and what models they are.

Potential problems here could be if these are used devices that the previous owner somehow actually managed to get mould into. Like maybe they're restored by someone that fixed the tech, but without knowing enough to clean out the mould (and you being allergic to it).

It’s also more than unusual for both devices to emit any fumes especially at the same time. Rather extremely unlikely.

Hi, I just contacted Apple because there is definitely toxic fumes coming from my iMac and iPad. They create headaches, throat irritation and also make breathing difficult. It is definitely the Apple products and I am looking for compensation. Now I don’t even feel they are safe for my children to use. I have seen other people complain of the same. Is anyone doing something about this?

Hiya, I think I will have to contact my GP to be able to do this since I also don’t have a lot of money at the moment, and depend on computer... don’t really know what to do since my children will also play on them. The advise of well ventilated areas is good despite I am at home... maybe open a window. I find crazy how nobody else took Apple to court because this is absolutely obscene. Thank you so much for your help.
This is not a widespread problem and probably is not a legitimate complaint either. Regardless, if you're looking for compensation from Apple you should be talking to your attorney and no one else.

If this was a widespread problem it is EXTREMELY unlikely that it hasn't absolutely blown up here at MR.

Where have you seen this "all over the internet"? What are the links?
It's amazing what people will do for a quick buck.

And agreed. Macrumors is basically THE place to go if you want to nitpick about your device and find every little tiny problem about it (then proudly post how you've returned X device 30 times and still have problems). I've been a Macrumor regular for awhile now and ... alrighty.

I mean... we do have that thread where people think the Apple Watch is causing cancer in their arm. So you know, the mind is a powerful thing. I can look at my hand and if I think it hurts long enough, it eventually will.

The internet is an interesting place. Sometimes. ...

Hiya. I seen it here in this forum, and if you google toxic fumes you will find it everywhere... even my friends from Portugal this is known from 2008?

Please back up your claims. If the internet is full of them you will likely be able to print to multiple reputable sources.

Wow. I thought I could get some help with a real issue that has also been spotted by a French researcher and many other Mac users and ended up being trolled by immature people. I spent a lot of money on my iMac and iPad and I am having a real problem... no I don’t want to make a quick buck but I dont want to also be taken advantage of since I bought a product that is basically faulty and dangerous. You have the right to your opinion but not to insult me or think I am lying about this. I didn’t said it was causing cancer, you did... I said it’s causing me headaches, throat irritation and difficulty breathing. Time to speak with a real professional, my GP instead of coming to the trolls cave... lesson learned!

Ah the maturity when being doubted after presenting an anecdote.

I think the joke is on you... give it time...
I don't think the joke is on ericwn. Did you actually read the links you posted? Even the article quoted says that Apple found no evidence. If there was any evidence, this would have been plastered all over the news, especially since a lot of this is from 2008. People take Apple to court over anything, and this would have had one hell of a day in court if it could have been proven. Till then it's anecdotal.

I can find more lizard people "all over the internet" than this. Doesn't make it true.

The only help you're going to get are from medical professionals. Go to the doctor. Don't use your devices any more until a lawyer, with professionals, can examine your equipment and determine whether or not it is actually faulty or not - then you will have a case for compensation.

Until then, it's hearsay, as it was in 2008.

I'm genuinely sorry if using your products is giving you headaches and making you sick. I spend all day on 3 laptops and use iPhones/iPads (and have for years). If that happened to me it would be debilitating because that's how I make my $. Hope you find a product that works for you. I can't imagine not spending 15 hours of my day in front of a computer.
