I've noticed there's been a huge amount of iPad-like devices since it was released. I personally think they are stupid. My iPad is perfect for me. Perfect weight, perfect display size, perfect battery life, and it will be even better when iOS 4.2 comes out. What do you think about these other tablets? (such as the Galaxy tab or whatever)

Great for you. My iPad is nice but it could be better. Competition forces apple to step it up a notch.

I think the android based ones will smoke IPAD. Cmon, no sd card, no usb,no hdmi, apple sucks. Controlling basturds.

So far, you can't buy any alternative tablets which is easy to use as an iPad. With all its limitation, iPad is still the best (cheap) tablet on the market today.

Competition is definitely good. Means Apple will make better revisions. I'm really liking the looks of the new android tablets. I can't afford a $500 tablet. But I could afford a $300 android tablet. Competition is definitely a very good thing.

I don't mind the competition. The hardware will probably catch up (they can offer more features, but need to meet the iPad's impressive size + weight to power usage + heat ratio), but I won't be using one of them until they refine Android to match iOS. From a mile away, they look close enough, but as always, the devil is in the details and Apple has it all over Android in the details. Google and Android device manufacturers still don't understand that the vast majority of the population are not computer geeks, don't build their own machines and maintain their own servers. They have a low tolerance for things like doing configuration for video chat and manually managing multitasking app resources. They will sell a lot of Android tablets, no doubt, but everytime I see and Android device with its clunky UI, I cringe. Not that iOS is perfect, it isn't. But it's still the best and it's clear Apple has spent years developing and refining it while everyone else is rushing "good enough" things out the door.

You speak truth, my friend! :)

So, you would not want iPad to be half its weight (like Galaxy Tab)? Just stay at the current weight level which is absolutely perfect, right?

Apple's iPad isnt Jesus.

Well lighter isn't bad, but if it's too light, I'd most likely drop it.

The Tablet sectors inherent attractiveness is its portability.

The lighter the device the longer you carry it with you thus enhance its portability.

A 10" device the size and weight of an iPad isnt going to last long enough, especially carrying it with one hand.

The Galaxy Tab, for example, weights only 380 grams.

The iPad, in comparison, weight 680 - 730 grams.

Alarms bells are sounding inside Steve's lab.

I love threads like this. All of the negative comments (those that offer no constructive criticism) come from NEWBIES.

Think MR has got itself a trolling problem? :D

Aren't you a "newbie" yourself? 2006? iPod generation? Most Apple fans probably consider you a newbie too ;)

How many dozens of "serious" iPhone killers did we see in the last three years? Two? Three? The first and classic # one of them, the Nexus, was buried some weeks ago without any pomp and circumstances. Sorry for the people who payed money for that Google crap.

I am afraid we will see similar things with the iPad and it's "killers". Apple has landed another monopoly for those who want a very good and stylish device that is worth each cent.

I too would like to see some serious competitors, but there aren't any. Just cheap copies.

Is not Galaxy Tab more expensive that iPad? :)

I'm looking forward to the influx of tablets

Cisco, Samsung, even (gasp) Microsoft (the anti Apple) will all have a compelling device. Multiple OS (iPad, Android, Palm's WebOS, Microsoft Phone) will offer us a lot of choices and people will be able to decide which one works for them.

No one size fits all. This is great! Getting a Cius from Cisco (personally I feel that will be the weakest of the group) at a demo in two weeks.

Yep, they started back in the Newton days -- and learned a few hard lessons along the way.

Great for you. My iPad is nice but it could be better. Competition forces apple to step it up a notch.

My super model wife could lose another five pounds. Competion will force her to step it up a notch...

On another serious note, Apple will produce working, functional devices, no matter what others produce or try to produce.

I think the android based ones will smoke IPAD. Cmon, no sd card, no usb,no hdmi, apple sucks. Controlling basturds.

Then you should like the tablet sold by Kmart. Only $150. I believe it has Android 1.6 and since they are not a Google partner, you can't install apps from the 'open' Google store. Hey at least it has a funky widescreen and a few ports. You'll save a ton of money on app purchases.

I am happy with mine, and I don't reflect on what it could of had. I have no need for hdmi, sd, or USB. I LOVE the fact that it doesn't have a camera. (My cell phone, iPod, toaster, and laptop don't have one either.)

Ipad will evolve. It will get better. It won't stagnate, whether there is any real competition or not.

The Galaxy tab is almost exactly half as big as the iPad, so it's no surprise that it's half the weight. What people don't realize is that the Tab screen is 16:9, so a 7 inch diagonal measurement sounds much bigger than it is. Over at Engadget, there is a gallery that shows that two Tabs placed together fit almost perfectly over one iPad.

Personally, I'm pretty invested in the iOS ecosystem and I prefer the more polished 'hands-off' approach to the OS vs the Android model of throwing all the settings at the user. The point is that it's the software that will determine the most popular tablet, not whether or not it has an SD card slot or an HDMI port.

Great, so go out and buy a Galaxy Tab... oh wait, no release date for the U.S. Maybe November, possibly December? Funny thing is, iPad 2 will probably come out the same time, which will leave the Tab looking outdated before it can even reach the market. Such is what happens when you enter the market late and copy the competition. Unfortunately for Samsung and others, they are copying an old model by the time they get theirs up and running.
