also AMD cares about efficiency on desktop. Their new Zen5 CPUs have reduced TDP while increasing performance. Meanwhile, Intel just pushes their chips too much View attachment 2397389
Serves purpose to further avoid as Intel only cares about Intel. The good news is Intel is no longer relevant, pouring ever more power into the CPU for incremental performance increases is history...

Really loving the Surface Pro OLED. Surprised by how great it is. I'm not missing my MacBook at all.

I bought the new SP Elite last week after owning all the Surfaces up to the SP7. I'm an architect and I always use a companion tablet for sketching, notetaking and marking up PDFs, BIG PDFs. I tired to use the iPad Pro for the last couple of years but for some reason it always falls short. It's better and faster than the Surface at some things but overall is just missing the mark for me.

The old Surface (Intel ones) were always too slow and a bit clunky. This new one is a revelation. It turns on fast and is very responsive. Onenote works brilliantly. I use Concepts for sketching and tracing over PDFs and it works just as well on the Surface as it does on the iPad. The new Elite keyboard is just perfect, I love it.

The biggest surprise of all is the my CAD software runs on the Surface!! This is full 3D software (ArchiCAD) and even though it is running under emulation it is totally useable. Hopefully they will release a native version soon.

Overall I am very pleased with my new companion.

When the Cellular ones are available, I may give this a run

I've always wanted an iPad that runs macOS to be my "only"
I'm now sitting in a cafeteria. I just tried out the Samsung Galaxy S9 Ultra in the Samsung Store. It's pretty cool and smooth. The Samsung Dex mode also feels pretty good. I wish the iPad had some kind of "Dex" mode. I think that could be the solution for iPadOS.

I have everything Apple, but sometimes I just don't want to carry my MacBook Air 16 Inch with me. I do have a MacBook Air 13 Inch though, but with the Tab Ultra it feels pretty comfy to just take out that keyboard.

Here in Argentina the S9 Ultra is more than 3.000.000 pesos, which is equal to almost 2600 euros. In The Netherlands the same device is 1029 euros. So definitely not gonna buy it here in Argentina.

However, I do have this love/hate relation with Samsung as I do not trust their software. The multitask and Dex features are cool, but knowing from friends, after a while their devices get slow. So really gonna think twice before purchasing this.

In Argentina when you buy things you don't really need, we call it "Bolucompras", which is what I am known for among my friends.

While writing this, I do realize that buying that Tab Ultra would be a bolucompra tho.

Took my SP9 out of storage yet again. Hoping to ditch the iPad Pro 12.9" for good this time. Been using it again for about a week. While there are a few minor issues (such as an inability for Apple Music Beta to switch sound outputs on the fly), it is really nice having a full Firefox browser, full file manager, etc.,

It's just so much cheaper on this side of the fence with deals. Like I paid $700 for this i5 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD version a full year ago. Added a 512GB SSD for $40 off Ebay. Not bad at all.

Yeah, I need to figure out a way to do Apple Music on this thing. Using Brave vs Firefox on my end.

For the Surface peeps: Do you have any issues waking from sleep after 1+ days when the surface is connected to a monitor? A reboot fixes this... but rebooting every day... man...

Also, for those of you with partners/other halfs, what is your choice for cross-platform chat? we think we've settled on Signal, but I'm curious to see other options. (What'sApp not an option here due to Meta).

Yeah I have a Surface Pro 9, and sleep kind of sucks on it haha. I just shut it down at night and restart it the newxt day and that seems to take care of the issue.

I've pretty much always had issues with sleep/standby on company issued windows devices, especially if some sort of docks are involved.

If I remember correctly there was a global Windows power management issue with one of the Hibernation (sleep) modes on laptops and tablets about 2 years ago. Not sure it applied to desktops as well.
EDIT: here is a Linus Tech Tips video about the issue.

With X86-64 the battery drain over night is in the double digits at work - if not plugged in.
When I tested the Surface Pro 11 (X Plus) it lost single digits battery charge over night.

Personally I don't have any use case for sleep/standby with modern boot times being a few seconds and energy at a premium price where I live anyway, heck even Surface Go 2 with a terrible old Intel CPU and just 8GB or RAM boots up and logs me in with Windows Hello to the desktop within about around 10 seconds.

That's your problem, company SW images are always problematic and generally half assed. When I quit and consulted all such issues went away. While far from being an expert on the subject, the computers worked as expected.

Today if a company wants admin access, they need to provide the hardware or I build it into the cost. A PC is what it is and a personal computer should be private by nature irrespective of use... For many a year I rolled with a corporate PC and a Mac for good reason.

Does it work on ARM devices? I don't see it when I search for it. (I have the surface pro 11).
It doesn't for whatever reason. Not directly anyways. You can CAN still use iTunes from the MS Store and that will let you access Apple Music too. It is also possible to get the Apple Music on ARM Windows but you have to download it manually using
Code:
winget install 9pfhdd62mxs1 -s msstore
in command prompt, where that weird gibberish string is the ID of the Apple Music app on the Windows store (you can check this yourself by looking at the MS website URL for the app). Why it's blocked I have no idea, it seems to run fine on my 8GB SQ1 SPX which is pretty anemic in the performance department.

A third option is to use the Apple music web UI.

If you really need to have your iMessage, repurpose an old Mac, install airmessage and it works great. I mainly work on a Surface Pro at the office and can review and respond to iMessage, even group messages.

I solved the wake from sleep issue by leaving the surface pro docked to the keyboard, turning off the Surface’s screen, and only displaying on my monitor. 👍

Thanks for all the tips on Apple Music. I also have enough devices nearby where I can stream to speakers.

What’s the security like for this?
