The battery on the SL7 seems to never die. The SL7's standby mode is fantastic as well; I didn't use the SL7 for about 16 or so hours and the battery drained by only 2%, which is insane.
Same can be said for my 2020 M1 MBP as it easily passes 20 hours on battery. While some wine about macOS Apple has clearly worked on it an improve performance. As for SL7 all power to it, as end users we need strong competition...

Can it do...

This seems like a good dose of reality, and kind of confirms what I said when Apple Silicon first came out. These new techs are amazing, but it isn’t going to be enough to change someone’s mind honestly. If you were a Mac user, you are happy with the M-series Apple Silicon, and if you are Windows, Snapdragon may be good enough, but AMD and Intel were anyway.

Ars Technica's review of the new machines is out:

Looks like a solid upgrade over the Intel hardware. I'm personally not interested in a Windows laptop, but if Microsoft's push towards ARM encourages more Linux development for the platform, I'm all for it.

It's crazy the issues he reported on new units. As much as I want a Windows Lappy, I read of so many issues and know since 1994 I have needed only two Mac repairs. Perhaps better luck than some, but seemingly worlds better than Win notebooks.

I've really been enjoying my Surface Laptop. I've had no issues. The only downside is the crazy reflective screen.

One major issue is that my school's exam application does not support ARM, and the company is showing no signs of doing so. If I do not get a confirmation soon, I will probably have to switch back to a MacBook. This sucks if so.

Emulation would just kick in automatically, correct? There's nothing I need to do on my end?
This is on Microsoft and Qualcomm. They know these laptops will be picked up by students and yet either didn’t think to contact the company to port it ARM. They partnered up with various media companies but forgot about student applications.

Just got my SL7 a couple days ago and the trackpad is atrocious! Not sure how everyone isn’t reporting this as it jumps and skips around constantly no matter what settings I change. Not to mention no scrolling inertia in Windows makes it so slow feeling when browsing the web.

The fan noise isn’t great either and sound’s almost broken. Everything else seems solid outside of Windows being a mess of nested settings that never end geez.

iCloud Windows app is super cool though to sync all my stuff.

are you still feeling the same about it? :( I was so hoping the SL7 would be my ideal PC laptop, quiet, fast enough for office apps. Is it REALLY as bad as you thought?

Yes, I just returned it. Even reviewers I trust to be honest said the trackpad was great so maybe I received a bad one…

doh :( yeah everything I've read has been good. Are you going to get another or another make?
I’ll probably order the cheapest model this time around. I really only want it to have around for testing purposes similar to how I bought the first m-series chip Mac but man, that trackpad was so useless. External mouse worked fine though.

That's disappointing. IMO Surface has always had one of the better trackpads for a PC laptop - hopefully yours was just a one-off thing.

You might just want to wait for Intel in the next generation or two which should be on a much smaller or more dense node than Apple at this time.

If Intel can increase efficiency and performance enough to eclipse m series chips then what you are seeking on ARM might be better served on x64/x86 platform and it is possible that MS will build a better device than what seems to be in initial reports.

At the moment even M2 is still very competitive with current QC ARM and Intel and AMD alternatives.

Intel sat on it's arse for best part of a decade and now it rushing to market...LOL. If Intel can get ahead of Apple Silicon it will just do exactly the same over. Hence why we need stronger competition to stop such behaviour by lazy & greedy corporations like Intel.

Apple is many things nor all good by any means, however they drew a line in the sand and took it on themselves & their partners to do something different that actually made a difference for the end user, not just another power hungry increment with a price hike...

yeah I agree with that.

I bought one of the last intel powered macbook pros. It was very much like a windows x86 laptop tbh, loud noisy fans, running hot, ages to shut down/start up

I still have my m1 macbook pro and I have yet to hear the fans, it's fast, smooth, sleeps and wakes perfectly etc.

If I was to build a new gaming box it would be AMD powered as at least they tried and eventually got ahead. Intel typically focused on profit not advancement. Resultantly I see no reason to fund the likes of Intel as they are clearly only self serving...

Portable remains the M1 MBP as runtime on battery is unbeatable, that counts in a portable role more than anything else...

also AMD cares about efficiency on desktop. Their new Zen5 CPUs have reduced TDP while increasing performance. Meanwhile, Intel just pushes their chips too much
