I wasn't that impressed with the idea but the implementation does look good, granted not the latest in specs but as others have posted I suspect this will be a multitasking champ. As always software is critical.

The video of the display unit a few posts earlier showing the device turned on looked great with excellent performance and smooth scrolling, at least to me. I didn't see anything that would make me worried about performance. Anyway, I would never make a decision on a phone/computing device based strictly on how it performs in a retail store. God only knows how it has been handled there. To me, the Duo has the most exciting hardware I have seen for a foldable device and it has specs that will be more than adequate for my day to day use. I ended up preordering it. If I find too many frustrating performance issues when I start using it, well that is what the return policy is for.

Cheering loudly from Europe where it's not available, happy to see some folks on here getting the Duo :D Partly out of egotistical reasons of course as I'm dying to hear some trustworthy user reviews...;)

I know it makes no logical sense to get this version. Large bezels, small battery, no wireless charging, last gen specs, no NFC, likely a poor camera, no external screen or led, yet here I am.

I don't think I've been this excited about a product since the Sony Clie NR-70 and UX-50. It even reminds me of those due to the color and clamshell design.
I think I still have the NR70V sitting in an old box somewhere. Totally forgot I used one years back.

I don't know if its me that share these thoughts... but Microsoft going to have a tough time selling that Surface Duo, considering how much of a beaut that Z Fold 2 5G is.

If i go into a store and i see these phones side by side... and i was in a market for some high-end premium phone. That Z Fold 2 5G would be my first choice. Granted that 1400 price tag might be the best thing going for the Duo, but idk... why not pay 600 for all those extra features on Z Fold 2 5G.

I can certainly see that. I’ve messed around with one in the store now and my excitement has cooled a bit. The AT&T demo popping up every 30 seconds or so certainly jaded the experience. I’m anxiously awaiting the reviews before I order though.

Yeah, when you compare the 2 on specs alone it really isn't even a contest, but I think that the Duo is going to have a pretty different use case then the Fold 2. I am getting both, and will keep which one works best for me. My Duo should arrive this week, so I am pretty excited to try it out.

This is not a device I consider a true "foldable." To me, a true foldable is one panel that folds. This is what we all expected when we were imagining a futuristic device that folds. This is just 2 displays that are connected with a hinge. Aka, dual screen device. They've already been around. I really wish tech YouTubers would stop talking about this as if it's equivalent to the one panel folding devices out there. One is bleeding edge tech and looks the part, the other is not. No shade on MS, as I use Windows, and would love to see more MS/Samsung collaborations on Samsung devices. I still feel there is a place for a device like this, but not sure it'll sell in the numbers necessary for MS to keep in in development. Time will tell.

One thing (but there are more) I dislike about the duo is no outer display so you can see/interact with notifications etc/see and make calls. But again, there are a few more dislikes. No 5g is also I downer.

Yeah, there are quite a few...no outward facing display, a singular camera of questionable quality, lack of rated water/dust resistance, no wireless charging, no stereo speakers, dated CPU, very questionable battery performance considering the size of the battery.

This is a device for early adopters who like to try out new tech. It's really a beta hardware product.

Got my first hands on with the Duo at Best Buy
My thoughts:

Great build and quality hardware. This is a premium piece hardware. The software seemed to be designed for the hardware.
This is a very nice device!
Reasons why I won’t buy.
no wireless charging is a no go for me
No outside camera
No outside display

The hinge seems to be really tight to me. Not sure if it would loose up after using it for a while?

Maybe loosen up too much

Tried it out at Best Buy. Super, super laggy and the hinge was tough to open (very tight). Meh. DOA, IMO.
AND it’s got that huge cable thing attached to the back too, I mean wtf kind of moronic design is that? This thing will be a complete flop. Just lul.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to in regards to the cable, but I agree: it’s a flop. A laggy mess. A tight hinge. No outer screen. No wireless charging. No NFC payments. Huge bezels. Dated processor. Etc. A flop!

It looks awful, TBH. Like WTF, Microsoft.

Yeah, I won’t go so far to say it’s awful, but it’s not far off.

EDIT: Ok, just watched Mr. Mobile’s review...yeah, it’s a disaster. The hardware limitations are one thing...all of those software performance issues should have been squashed before release. It’s no wonder MS had an embargo on the software experience until now.

**************************

I said it before, it really is beta hardware with a ton of compromises and there’s no way I’d spend $1400 to be their guinea pig. If you are looking for a more ‘portable’ productivity device, get a Surface Go 2 LTE with a keyboard and pen. It’ll be about $600 less, offers a far better ‘productive’ work environment, and probably has just as “good” of a camera.

MKBHD said it best, it’s the second version that is the most intriguing as it shows if the OEM was paying attention and addressing the areas that needed it. The Fold 2 is a great example...objectively a huge improvement over the first version. So I’m absolutely going to keep my eye on what Microsoft offers in version 2 but there is no way anyone should be buying this version unless you just have money to burn.
