Mine come strait into my inbox. Did you phone O2 and tell them you have another phone?

It might also help to actually setup and test on another 3G phone (N95, M600i e.t.c) then once you know that is working transfer your sim to you iPhone. It may be that the network needs to detect a 3G phone to deactivate the web messages and send the message strait to the phone.

O2 send and receive

Following the instructions I spoke with O2 today and I was initially told that MMS wasn't available for the iphone. I asked them to remove the mms flag and reapply it. The service advisor was able to do this while I was on the phone and confirmed the changes were live (almost immediately). I hung up, tried send and receive with swirly and everything works fine.

I'm on the £35 iphone tariff.

Thanks!!

mms flag?

is anyone having any luck with this?? every time i ring o2 they say they cant enable mms on iphone, frustrating!!!

It does work (well the theory does)

Just to reaffirm what has been said above. You can get the MMS settings into Swirly from the app itself but the problem is that the account is not provisioned for MMS exactly as people have stated.

I phoned up 02 - told them I use my N82 at the weekends and wanted to use MMS and understood that this would mean my iPhone would not receive notifications.

They had to migrate me to what they called a newer version of my contract (same price, same terms) but the new contract could be provisioned for MMS. Perhaps this in itself is a sign that native MMS is coming.

As it is a Sunday I was told it may take 48 hours but would normally take 24 hours.

It therefore looks like the above information was totally correct - thanks.

EDIT: I had to be passed through to the iPhone team. It was a member of the iPhone team who set this up so it might be worth making that request at the start.

UPDATE: IT WORKS!!! MMS send and receive!! w00t!!

Just wanted to add to this thread as i too have been unable to get o2 to co-operate with turning the notification text message off.

I rang o2 and spoke to a very helpful person who enabled my account to send MMS messages, at the time i didnt realise that i had to SPECIFICALLY tell him that i want MMS messages to be delivered straight to my inbox without the text message telling me to go online.

Anyway, so i have been able to send MMS but when i rang o2 a second time i was told that there is no way that i can have the txt message turned off as i am on an iphone. I told him that i knew this was possible as my friend had it done. He rudely told me that my friend was lying and that it is not possible.

It seems that you need to get a decent person to do it, or maybe too many people have asked and now they are just saying no to everyone?

Either way i will try again tomorrow i think, it is extremely frustrating, so close to full MMS yet so far.

Edit:
*I told them that i was swapping my sim between my n96 and iphone
*I also tried to use the contact from to email o2 and ask them to sort it out but since there stupid text box only allows a certain number of characters i was unable to put my story across.
*What numbers are the people who got this to work ringing?

Have you been able to send pictures taken from your iPhone's camera when the settings are set to "maximum"?

I can send them but only when on medium.

@Pottypotsworth I had to be put through to the iPhone team by the 02 customer servies rep.

This is what you need to explain politely:

"MMS can be enabled on an iPhone contract. Some older contracts do not have this option but you can be migrated to a newer contract at no cost or change to your tariff/contract length"

Explain that
a) it can be done so that users who put their SIM cards in a different phone at the weekend (or after the iPhone conks out in a few hours of normal use lol) can use MMS and

b) WE WOULDN'T BLOODY WELL HAVE TO ASK IF THE STUPID THING DID MMS OUT OF THE BOX LIKE ANY NORMAL PHONE

You need to "accept" that when the SIM is in the iphone you wont receive notification of an incoming MMS.

I got this working in one call.

@ajnicho - I think mine is set to medium - will try large and let you know. Works fine at medium tho.

Snip....

Hey RockJam,

So i tried 2 other times and went straight through to the iPhone team, both times i tried what you said and both times was told it is NOT POSSIBLE. Anyway i decided to email customer services to ask them, thats a job in itself since the box allows you type 1 tiny paragraph. After being told again that this was not possible i sent them a reply saying that i knew full well it was possible and basically just said i will be leaving O2 after 5 years of being a customer if it isn't resolved... low and behold it was suddenly possible!

So now it is working, for anyone else reading this i think that the thing to remember is NOT to give up, i personally think that they are being told by hire ups not to switch it on but i have no proof of this.

@Pottypotsworth

Looks like I was lucky then. The Customer Services rep certainly tried to tell me it wasn't possible but I just patiently explained that it was but not widely known. I must have then hit lucky when I was transferred to the iPhone team.

I do wonder if they try to block this deliberately but anyone at all who has an iPhone regardless of whether they Jailbreak finds SMS notification annoying and probably wants it turned off.

That's the issue with the iPhone - it is an excellent mobile internet device with some basic mobile phone functionality built in. . Below average camera. No MMS. No video. You can't forward an SMS. You can't use a number inside an SMS (WTF??!). You can't edit a recently dialled number.

The ability to solve all of this (bar the camera) with software updates leaves us ever hopeful. In the meantime, thank goodness, we can "pwn" the phone even if the contract means we never actually "own" it!

I'm going to have a bash at this - I'm on the £45 contract with unlimited texts bolt on. How much is it going to cost me to send and receive MMS?

Also, I assume Swirly is now running in the background if it can intercept incoming MMS's?

Edit: just been told by o2 that it can't be done - he was a right miserable sod!

I tried a few days ago and it sounds like I got the same miserable sod. He was a really unhelpful person who just did not want to listen to anything as I tried to explain nicely to him what others have mentioned in this thread. Upshot is I still can’t use Swirly MMS.

Had an helpful lady this time and she spent ages trying to find an option but ended up telling me it can't done! Damn annoying! Have emailed now but don't hold much hope. And how much is it costing me to send MMSs anyway?

Can somebody please confirm the following for me: on o2 with the correct settings from them and SwirlyMMS installed should I be able to get full MMS messages and not an o2 MMS web link?

I guess MMS is detected by Swirly in the same was sms is detected by the native app for SMS.

For those of you for whom this is still not working: when you speak to customer services

1. Explain that MMS can be turned on for iPhone contracts - the reason you want it turned on is that you sometimes put the SIM in your old phone or even just because the SMS are plain irritating.

2. Explain that the iPhone team provsion this not customer services.

3. Explain that some older contracts don't have the option for MMS but you can be easily put on the newer contracts, this doesn't cost anyhting but might take up to 24 hours.

4. Ask them if it would help if they had the IMEI number of an account hat has it turned on and then if they say yes PM for mine.

If you still don't get any joy then I would suggest going straight to disconnections as that is the highest level of customer support you can get and email cunstone@cpw.com to complain about the service.

Hope that helps

R

There seams to be some confusion with o2 and my account. I can send and receive MMS (as they keep telling me) BUT I only appear to be getting a web link when I receive an MMS. What is it I need to ask o2 for to get that sorted? Could my settings be wrong?

Small update just found these settings:

MMSC: mmsc.o2.co.uk:8002
Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080
APN: mobile.o2.co.uk
Username: bypass
Password: web

Set the phone to Nokia N95 and I can now send and receive properly! Might be of some use to other people having trouble. The key was in the username and password for me.

Regarding MMS costs on o2: I've just had this back from support:

As you're on an iPhone tariff you won't get 1 MMS = 4 text messages from your tariff allowance. Please note that the Unlimited text messages Bolt On is only for sending text messages within the UK and not for sending media messages.

Can anyone confirm how much it actually is to send an MMS on an iPhone tariff?

That's very interesting. I would like to see if this works for other people. It would appear some people can get the txt msg to PICON to work so maybe some accounts are on this newer contract already.

LOL - oh dear! I will tell you when my bill arrives!! :apple:

Hi!
It's my first message, I've reading everywhere trying to make this app run and i finally contacted O2..
This is the reply they gave me when I asked them to add the mms to my contract (I got the contract since december 07)

Thank you for emailing us and Im sorry youre having problem with the MMS service activation.

Ive checked your account and can see that you will be able to use your iPhone sim card in your old phone however youll be not able to activate MMS service on the old phone as youre on a iPhone tariff which is not compatible for MMS service. However if you change your iPhone tariff to the standard tariff then youll be able to activate the MMS service on your old phone.

The I asked what's the difference between both tariffs and I told her that I wanted to use the iphone and the unlimited internet access too, this was her reply:

Thanks for emailing us about changing your tariff.

If you change your tariff to the Online 35 (18 month) tariff for £29.79 excluding VAT (Value Added Tax) a month, then you can add unlimited Web Bolt On to your account free of cost. If you want to add unlimited Wi-Fi Bolt On to your account then you'll need to pay £6.38 (excluding VAT) extra each month.

The Online 35 tariff will then include the following allowances each month:

600 anytime cross network call minutes
1000 text messages or 250 media messages
unlimited Web Bolt On
free Voicemail (901) and cheaper roaming rates with International Traveller Service (ITS)
browse the internet on your mobile for up to 85p (excluding VAT) per day.

Please click on the link below to view details of call charges of this tariff:

http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs/18_months

Please note that VAT is currently charged at the rate of 15%.

You'll then able to use unlimited Internet free of cost with iPhone and would able to access MMS on your other phone.

Please note that you won't have full functionality of all iPhone features such as Visual Voicemail and Call Merging.

If you want to change your tariff, please reply to this email. We'll then help you further. Please also mention that if you want to add unlimited Web Bolt On to your account free of cost and chargeable Wi-Fi Bolt On.

And I read that a mms counts as 4 sms's, so they are included in your tariff too.

I hope it helps!!!

Very interesting about the tariff but I wouldn't want to lose Visual VoiceMail or Call Merge and...

youre on a iPhone tariff which is not compatible for MMS service

Is bollsocks because I am on it and I have it.

I can't work out whether they are incompetent or poorly trained or being deliberately obstructive. It was like this when you used to get a new phone and you needed the Mobile Internet settings to do email (before you could request them) and advisor after advisor would try and give you WAP settings no matter how hard you tried to explain to them that wasn't what you wanted.

I mentioned it on Swirly forum but if anyone gets and advisor who says it can't be done then ask them if they would like IMEI of an account that has it enabled and then PM for the IMEI (tho you will have to tell me where to find it on an iPhone!)

Isn't it the case though that old iPhone contracts have to be migrated to new versions which include MMS? I was told I was on a new style so no further changes were needed. Also, for those trying to change, after many failed phone calls, I got it sorted same day over email.

Yes, that is absolutely correct, exactly what I was told and how I managed to get it working in one call.

You have to be put through to the iPhone team.
If you are on a new contract then it gets enabled.
If you are on an old contract you need to be moved onto the new one and then have it enabled.

Even tho I called on a Sunday this was still done in less than 24 hours
