Interesting. I believe it actually is taking up that storage though as others have said they weren’t able to do iOS updates due to lack of free space.
Just ran across this problem for that reason -- whether it's actually using the space or not, iOS won't do an update for me because it says not enough free space.

This started when I updated my old iPadPro to iOS 17.

Yup. It’s largely irrelevant if that space is free or not if the OS acts like it’s used.

Same here. I've got an iPhone 11 Pro (64GB). Been running at around 50GB, but went to update just now and it shows I have 60GB used and won't let me update. A large section of it is the Synced content which wasn't showing before.

17.0.3 today. Music data no longer shows but Sync data does so no double count. But weird - I have 11GB of System Data but if I enable Offload Unused Apps in App Store settings, that drops by 10GB. Disable it and the 10GB returns. And I don't see apps offloaded.

Same here. 17.0.3 appears to have resolved this.

I'm running 17.1 beta (I think). So if I sync my phone with the Mac, the synced data issue should be resolved?

Now my iPad is on 17.0.3 and the issue appears to be resolved, at least for me. Now I no longer have the duplicate storage being consumed by music. I now have 12.5GB of storage shown as “Synced Content”, which exactly matches the 12.5GB of “all songs” shown in the Music app. The app itself, combined with “Documents and data” account for less than a GB. So the Synced content is only the songs I’ve synched onto my iPad. The same story is true for my iPhone. No longer do I see the large Synced content amount in addition to the same amount used by the Music app.

I hope this resolves itself for all who ran into this issue.

All hail 17.0.3! Not the way round I expected they’d fix it but happy enough

Right.... I think mine is sorted out now. But worryingly I have a very large music library and only a 64 GB phone 🤦‍♂️

This is what I have. Does it sound right?

Synced Content = 19.23GB
All Songs =19.23
Music = App size 22.9MB
Documents & Data = 1.21GB

Yes, this sounds right. The Synced Content matches the amount for All Songs, but those two numbers are no longer counted twice against your available storage. If you’re concerned about space on your phone, you could elect to sync only a portion of your music to the phone, as I did for years, since my phone wouldn’t hold my music library. Between deleting some of my music and getting a phone with more storage, I can finally fit my entire music library on my phone, with plenty of room to spare.

Thanks GGJstudios.

Im already not syncing all my music. Ive taken off my Xmas playlist 😢

Justification for a shiny new phone??? 😊

Well, that was part of my justifcation/motivation for a new phone. My old iPhone 11 Pro had only 64GB of storage. My new iPhone 15 Pro Max has 512GB. No longer do I have to choose which music to sync or wonder if I have enough space to install the latest iOS update. Since I only buy a new phone every 3 or 4 years, it was definitely time for an upgrade.

I have figured the problem out in my case. It involves audiobooks. The books app doesn’t show the accurate audiobooks files size. When I talllied up my audiobooks file size it gav 5.06 gigabytes, and that’s also the synced content file size. I went over to my computer and removed two audiobooks of 2.0 gb size total and the synced content correspondingly reduced by 2.0 gb. So it’s probably audiobooks.

Hope this helps.

A new item appeared in my iPad storage listing called "synced storage". It takes up nearly 8gb and reduces on device available storage. Is anyone else seeing the same entry and how might one get rid of it? I do not see the same entry on my iPhone which is also running the same beta.

It’s not limited to Audiobooks. I don’t even have Audiobooks on my devices. As previously stated in this thread and in the other one you referred to, the issue is that Synced Content, whether it be from Audiobooks or music or other content, was being counted twice against available storage. That issue appears to have been resolved with 17.0.3.

Before telling people to post in another thread, it would be helpful if you actually read that thread. You would have seen that people posting here also posted in the other thread.

Yes, it's resolved and I'm back to having almost 10GB of free space on my iPad. My Music app now shows 165MB, while synced content is 10,77GB, which is the size of my music library. All good now on iPadOS 17.0.3.
Things like this will not be a concern anymore after I upgrade to an iPad with 128GB of storage next year.

Hey I have been browsing on this forum after updating to latest 17.3 iOS and the problem I’m having is the “ iPhone synced content “ . I have iPhone 13 - 256 GB and it’s taking 174 GB of data . I have been trying for weeks now on how to fix this issue and the causes etc . I got a tech call from Apple for hours and they said only option is to completely restore the iPhone and back up .

I would plz love to know if anyone has been able to fix this issue without restoring .
