So I have thought of a neat way to share those people who want to buy a Mac and was wondering their performance in gaming on a Mac, just request a game and a benchmark as well as some modifiers.

I have a Macbook Pro 15.4in 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM 1066Mhz, nVidia 9600MGT 512MB VRAM and a 320GB HD Max Resolution 1440x900 using laptopvideotogo drivers.

Running the following games on Bootcamp:

CS:S
Garry's Mod
Test Drive Unlimited
Armed Assault
Battlefield 2
Call of Duty 4
Flight Simulator X
Crysis
Joint Operations
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 Episode 1 + 2
Portal
GTA SA
GTR2

I know it isn't much and most are old but it can be helpful to some people who are prospective Mac buyers.

So post what game benchmark you would like to see such as:

"Call of Duty 4" 1280 x 1024 All High Settings 4x AA"

then I would post something like 60fps average, 90 max, 28 min.

If you have a Steam Game that you would like me to try out on your account, PM me and we can go through the steps.

Call of Duty 4 1440x900 AA 4x everything on except soften smoke

Crysis 1280x800 AA 0x everything high shaders and shadows medium

Call of Duty 4 1440x900 AA 4x everything on except soften smoke

Crysis 1280x800 AA 0x everything high shaders and shadows medium

COD4 (First mission, Cargo Ship): Min 19 fps Max 70 fps Avg. 44.5 fps

Crysis (GPU Benchmark looped twice, I used the DX9 all high hack so it may have affected these numbers): First Run Avg 22 fps, Second Run Avg 24 fps, Avg 23 fps

If you don't mind me getting picky, I'm curious to see what you get in FSX, with the following settings:
Graphics: everything max except with 16 bit color (ie, the highest resolution that ends in x16)
Aircraft (Exterior Settings): All checked
Scenery: Terrain and Water settings maxed, Scenery Objects sliders in the middle of the range except Autogen Density off (the lowest setting)
Weather: Cloud Draw Distance 60mi, Detailed Clouds
Traffic: All 0.

Thanks. FSX is really picky about settings...changing one little thing can have huge effects on FPS with little effect on quality.

FSX: Min 16 Max 46 Avg 30

Some notes: Measured by flying a Cessna out of San Francisco Intl', flew by the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. Some parts during the flight was stuttering due to massive amount of HD reading times the game demands for the insane textures.

Wow! ... really appreciate the time you're taking on helping everyone!

Mind running the Bioshock demo and seeing what kind of FPS you get with everything high, 1440x900 res, and 4x AA?

Also, how do the Source games run? I'd be curious to see how Team Fortress 2 runs with max settings.

Counter Strike Source (full res, all high): 83.76fps 16x AA 16x Aniostropic Filtering (Video Stress Test)

Garry's Mod (Uses Orange Box Engine also all high 16x AA 16x Aniostropic Filtering): Min 43 Max 82 Avg 72

Bioshock Demo: Min 21 Max 60 Avg 30 (constant 30 fps, very smooth and playable)

FSX: Min 16 Max 46 Avg 30

Nice! That's right about what I was expecting, which is a few more fps than I'm getting.

could you do test drive unlimited 1440x900, medium settings, 2x aa?
Thank you very much for your time, could you maybe do it with the 9400m also just for kicks? Thanks again

Hi there adamvk,

I did the benchmark per your settings. Since there isn't a benchmark mode in Test Drive Unlimited, I just did a single player cruise around. These FPS are numbers when viewing the back of the car (the camera right after the bumper). Here are my results.

City driving (Honolulu): 30 fps
Driving with lots of trees: 37 fps
Driving in the open: 53 fps
Average: 46 fps

Now for me, I like to drive with 4x AA High Quality with HDR off, and I get these... average 35 fps, which is still highly playable.

I cannot run the 9400m on the Windows side (Apple doesn't allow you to).

Ok sweet, Thank you very much.

I'm gonna get the low end MacBook Pro though (but prob w/ 4gb ram), so what would you estimate my frame rates would be? Everything there -10?

No the 256MB vs 512MB RAM is hardly any difference in any of these games. Unless you are driving 1920x1080 or higher (like a 24in or 30 in), I would not worry. You'd see like at most a -2 fps difference.

What are you using to benchmark these games? I use Fraps.

Yes, I am using Fraps. I run the benchmark to get an FPS every second, it saves it to a log file and then I can analyze this afterwards.

Oh this thread is awesome! :D

Could you run Unreal Tournament 3 at 1280x800 with everything maxed and no AA? Thank you very much :)

Any other game you would like me to benchmark?

If it is a game that I don't own, try linking me to a demo or Steam game etc...

Wow man thanks alot for your time, this is exactly what i wanted to see.

could you please try gears of war.
1027X768
everything on high
DX10 effects OFF

THANKS ALOT!

But I'd also have a 2.4GHZ cpu instead of your 2.53GHZ, would that make a difference? And what about if it was only 2GB of ram as well?
