I know there are a few threads about this, but I wanted to share my experience. I traded in my old xbox 360 (on the way out anyway) and some games, and I was able to get an ipad 1st gen for a price of $131.99 at my local gamestop this morning. (net cost to me was just the xbox 360 and some games. I actually have $.23 left on the gamestop gift card).

I then took the ipad to Target and proceeded to trade it in at the cell phone station for a $200 target gift card. With my Target card's 5% discount, my total cost was $292.xx for a 16 gig ipad air.

I had purchased two ipad at best buy on launch day, but my fiance decided she would rather have a Macbook Air. So like the great guy that I am (;)) I returned both ipad so we could get her a MBA.

Bottom line, I have my iPad Air and she has her Macbook Air.

Does Target check to see if it's functional? You can probably pick up a "broken, for parts only" iPad 1 on eBay pretty cheap. Certainly less than $200.

Yes. the one I got from gamestop was a "Scratch and Scuff" item, but it powered up just fine.

The Target special actually says the screen must be free of cracks and the ipad must power on.

According to this website (http://www.targettradeinprogram.com/empty_cart/) they are only giving $65 for a iPad 1 16 GB. Where are you getting this $200 figure from?
This is an in-store deal, not an online deal. Walk in with your iPad to a Target that has a mobile aisle.

I turned two iPad 1 16GB units in a couple of hours ago and received 2 x $200 gift cards. I Used them to buy two 16GB Airs for the kids (Seemed only fair - I traded in their iPads... lol) but the gift cards said "Target Electronics" so they could probably have been used for anything in the Electronics dept.

Meh, not ready to get rid of my ipad 1 yet. Plus I kinda wanna keep it just because it's the first one y'know.

I understand the feeling. I never had an orignial ipad (started at ipad 2), but when I left gamestop, I played with the first gen ipad for a solid 10 minutes before heading to target. It made me think about the innovation that went into making it and how far tablets have come. (and save the rants about the "first" tablet computers, etc. I know Apple wasnt the first. But Apple was the first one to be successful at it).

I know the feeling, but it's also nice to eliminate the family nagging when poorly coded apps crash due to the memory limitation.

Cause, you know.. it's always my fault if their iPad/computer/phone has a problem.

How did you get the $130 price at Gamestop? Online it shows at $199 for the scratch and dent model and $219 for the normal preowned 16gb 1st gen.

there is a current special for gamestop rewards program members for 25% off any mobile device. And the base price for the ipad (1st gen) scratch and scuff models is 169.99 in my area.

169.99 x 75% = 127.50 + tax.

Maybe you can call around to your local gamestops.

EDIT: I just checked again, and maybe gamestop picked up on what some people were doing as the price is now $199.99. as of 10am this am, the price was 169.99

Too bad that's a good deal especially since there's no trade in limit at Target.

Do they offer higher for newer iPads? Like a 16 GB iPad 3rd Gen with Cellular? The promotion says at least 200, but nothing about the ceiling. Also, do they sell all flavors of the Air, like the 16 GB with Verizon Cellular? I'm dying to know.

Give them a call. If you are in fact dying call 911 first.

if they are giving 200 for iPad 1 what are they offering on iPad 2 3 and 4? curious as hell! I shop at target all the time and just sold a ipad1 64gb for 140 bucks I feel stupid
