Can someone comment on how long it took for the inspection? Wife said she thinks it was 20 minutes per person.

Also, any idea if they'll reject it if the screen was replaced with an aftermarket?

Took 5-10 minutes max. However had to wait for a family getting multiple phones, accessories, backup old/restore to new phones.

I had very little interest in an iPad Air until I heard about this deal from Target. I have an iPad 1 that's stuck on iOS5, and I don't want to pay $500. $280 is much more reasonable.

I just crunched numbers.... and in order for it to work for me I have to go with 16gb devices.

We have 32s now - it will be rough going back, not to mention with cameras they are going to want a variety of other apps on there too.

Or I can keep my life functioning as it does now and skip it - or just trade in mine, save the CG for the retina mini for my oldest, and order the t-mo variant.

That might work.

Except, I should keep mine and trade in the kids (mine is 3g). Hmmmm.....

Definitely trade in whatever is least valuable if you aren't trading all in. It seriously bugs me how much the data and extra GB depreciate. Really you will only offer me $10 more for a 32GB 3G ipad2 when it cost me $230? Even with the bump up to $200 it would still be over $500 out of pocket to upgrade to a new iPad with the same specs.

trade-in took me less than 5 min.

but, I had to wait for almost 2 hours... three people in front of me were buying cellphones.

Meh, not ready to get rid of my ipad 1 yet. Plus I kinda wanna keep it just because it's the first one y'know.

I'm not that nostalgic and really could have used the $200 for my new iPad but I'm keeping my 1st gen iPad for a setlist app I use with musical projects. I just don't feel comfortable subjecting my new iPad to all the possible consequences of it being damaged or stolen while using it at shows.

But darn I didn't think any company would be offering that kind of money for an iPad 1 as every trade in offer previously didn't include the iPad 1.

For me as well. I was at Tyrone store in St Pete, Fl and they had one poor guy working. I was there 2 1/2 hours total with only 10 mins spent on my trade-in (and five of those minutes were waiting on their slow a$$ printer). Happy with the end result though...traded in my 1st gen 16gb Ipad (which my 2 year old was in the middle of playing with) and walked out with a $200 gift card to the electronics department. Now the hard part is deciding which device I want too purchase next. My wife has a 16gb 2, and me a 16gb 3, which we are both more than happy with for the time being. Any advice?? I'm sure I know what my 2 year olds advice would be :)

So condition doesn't matter, except no cracked screen? I have an ipad gen 1 with a broken screen, but the corner is dinged up as well. I can get a new screen installed for $95, maybe less, but I don't want to do it and then Target won't give me the $200.

And they give you a GC, it doesn't have to go to a new ipad air?

Had some questions before I went yesterday and everything worked great. The process took about 5-7 minutes, waiting in line took about 10-15 minutes.

In case anyone has questions....

1. No scratches on the screen and iPad must be able to be turned on.

2. The person needs to be able to go into Settings > About > Model / Serial Number.

* Some guy in front of me wasn't able to get his because he had the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

3. Also asks for an ID in case the iPad was stolen.

4. The person resets the iPad there but I would recommend wiping everything off everything before you go.

5. Gives you the $200 and a receipt/proof with info in case your card gets stolen/lost.

* The back of the card should be scratched.

* You don't have to buy a new iPad or anything. Another guy in front of me got a new iPhone 5s, some guy went to buy a few household items and my friend and I bought nothing.

Forgot to add, my 1st gen had a dinged corner, 3 hairline scratches on the screen, and it was pretty worn around the area it is plugged into charged.

They ran a diagnostic program on my iPad ( original wifi), it took only a few minutes. The transaction takes longer if you are buying a phone or another iPad, if you just want the gift card, less than 10 minutes.

There was a four hour wait last night because of all the people in lie for trade-ins. If you go, call the store and ask what time the mobile person comes on duty and then show up 20 minutes earlier. You can also reserve the iPad you want if you are buying another one.

My experience

I hit the Boise, Idaho store at 11am on Sunday morning..guy said I was the first one who had brought a unit in for trade in.

Took a first gen 32gb iPad (he just tested to make sure it turned on and the screen was not broken). Got $200 gift card, plus they had just dropped the price in the computer on the iPad Mini to $299 (all the signage and the ad said $329). I had $95 in Target gift cards from Shopkick, so with tax I paid $20 and some change, but got a $25 Target gift card in the process. In and out in about 10 minutes. Cool Deal!! I haven't been able to pry his new iPad mini out of my 11 year old's hands....

(FYI - if anyone doesn't know what Shopkick is, you get rewards just for walking into certain stores with your iPhone - sign up here - http://get.shopkick.com/peppermint9536 )

That was a horrid experience.

SHe was not nice. She refused to do my two iPads (my boyfriend was with me so she did relent to him doing one), she never handed ME the cards, she did the whole process, and kept them. I also did not get my 5% red card the way she rang it up. I'm concerned if I had to return the mini because she kept the cards, will it refund to them?!?!

She also was going to refuse to allow me to use both cards on ONE purchase - she called the Target manager over for that.

I got testy, they NEVER pulled the ad out, they did not have a "correction" posted up front (i checked on the way in).

She insisted her manager said it was 1 per customer, and had to be used then. If they did not have the item I wanted in stock... they would refuse to do the trade-in.

No positive vibe with a guest there...... ye gads.

I just used my trade in gift card online to buy iTunes gift cards. Target has a 10% discount on them right now. You have to first register the card online and then when you are checking out you have to enter it as a Mastercard.

Sucks to hear so many had negative experience. I got to my Target a few mins before the mobile store opened. Got a $200 gift card in 5-10 mins and used it for a new iPad mini. Cost me $120 ($99+tax) and then I got a $25 Target gift card. My kids (5 and 2) will be far happier with the mini than our slow 1st gen ipad. And much happier once they each have their own when the retina mini comes out.

I didn't have to purchase anything and could have left with the $200 Target gift card had I wanted.

My sister has my parent's old 1st Gen iPad that is crack free and powers on...I think it'd be a good idea for them to do this. Thanks!

I waited about 20 mins had a couple of people in front of me. The guy told me I had to use the $200 towards an iPad purchase today.
I was a little upset because I didn't want to spend money at that moment. So the guy let me think it over for about 15 mins while he helped someone else.
Then he came back to me and muttered "just buy it and return it, you get your money back and the $200 in a gift card instead of a '$200 trade in card' " idk what the difference is between those two cards. He should have just told me that before, instead of being an a$$.
So overall, got $200, spent extra $300 and got a 16gb iPad air. But I will return/exchange, hopefully get iPad mini retina.

I tried this out today in a store in San Antonio and it worked like a charm. Walked in with my ipad 1 64 go and walked out with a gift card with 200 balance on it. I even bought some baby toys with it it make sure it works anywhere in the store. Works as advertised for me.

Ughhhhh. I thought I had effectively talked myself out of getting the iPad Air but now this deal has me rethinking things. And Target has the Air for $479. WHAT TO DO.

Not only does Target offer it for $479, they do pricematch also, so the guy ahead of me mentioned Amazon has it going for $449, the employee said that'll work. So we both walked away with a 16gb ipad air for $449.

Lucky you, Amazon doesn't sell iPad's, only marketplace sellers.

I've got this $200 Target card, but never shop at Target. I was going to put it towards a retina mini, but got one from best buy already. Besides iTunes cards, does target all other gift cards? Or prepaid credit cards maybe?

The Target in my area sells a lot of different gift cards. Not sure if you can use gift cards to buy gift cards though.

Good point, I'll have to go try. The sales rep told me I could just use it as a credit card, not to run it at the register as a gift card, so maybe it will work.

They have a lot of other gift cards besides iTunes, a lot of restaurants in particular. They do sell prepaid credit cards but you cannot use a gift card to pay for those. You can get any of the others with a Target gift card though.
