Only useful if you can unlock the Tesla with watch as standalone. Most ppl don’t have cellular on their Apple Watch.
I have left my phone on my desk and ran downstairs to grab something out of my car, just to remember my phone is on my desk. So it adds small conveniences like that.

No CarPlay no Sale!

There are ways to get CarPlay

I'm pretty sure the cars use Bluetooth. In fact the "walk away lock" feature locks the car when your Bluetooth phone is out of range. The car locks after you've walked perhaps 100 feet away. (or as soon as you turn off Bluetooth)

Of course, the entire car works with no cell signal, it is not needed for basic features. Yes I know I've used Tesla cars in places with zero-bars of cell service.

You would not need a cell-enabled watch
I tried the Tessie app with my Y and it wouldn't unlock w/o a phone for some reason.

Great news. Also have Tessie, but once this goes to AW, then will probably stop subscribing to Tessie. Great app though.

That’s odd. You need to make sure you setup your watch properly with Tessie
Tried their trial and followed the instructions last year and still couldn't get it to work. Maybe I missed something.
Didn't find a need to pay for it after.

Stats App does the same thing. As long as you see the Apple Watch show up in the Tesla lock screen, you won't need your phone (and an internet connection).

AFT… About … Time.

To be clear
- this is still app-based via BT
- this is NOT Wallet-based and does not leverage the CCC Digital Key standard via UWB/NFC

correct?

The new Model 3, 2023+ X have UWB. 2023+ S and Cybertruck have UWB but need to be enabled via a software update. The Y is currently the only one without it. It’s not in the Wallet, and is handled through apple’s API which shows up in Nearby Interactions in the Settings.

I’m not buying a Tesla for various reasons. Not having car play is one , but mainly I just dislike musk.
And I suppose you would never stoop to using Starling for internet access, Open AI, PayPal, or any medical technology developed on the ISS that had been delivered using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket either. All created by evil Elon.

Tesla's system is far superior than Apple CarPlay
Yes, and no.

What’s missing from Tesla’s system compared to CarPlay-
  • Apple maps
  • Google maps (full)
  • Waze
  • Speed camera alerts without planning journey
  • Ability to zoom in further on route
  • Ability for navigation to quieten music during instructions
  • Ability for navigation to pause audiobooks during instructions
  • Speed aware dynamic volume adjustment
  • Spotify (full resolution)
  • PlexAmp
  • Prologue (audiobooks from Plex)
  • Siri voice recognition
  • iMessage/sms reading and dictation

Unlocking with the Apple Watch would be a wellcome addition to the already great iOS integration.

And to all those who want Car Play - why? - did you ever own an Tesla?
This would be absolutely no benefit, because the onboard Software is absolutely great - and works perfect with the apple ecosystem.
CarPlay is only meant for cars with really bad software - eg like VW, Mercedes, BMW & Co - there I always use CarPlay, because it is far superior - but absolutely no need for it in a Tesla.

I don't think it will ever use the CCC digital key standard, but I would imagine a dedicated Apple Watch app would use UWB, just like the native iOS app does today.

Which would be big news IMO. UWB support on the iPhone for Teslas is amazing, and having Apple Watch function the same would add great flexibility and turn the watch into a more robust key solution than it is today via third parties.

I can't imagine buying a tesla in 2024. They're better looking and better quality vehicles to look at these days, to say nothing of Elon making a fool of himself.

Only admirable thing they've done lately is build a Watch app at a time where everyone else seems to be bowing out of that platform.
What EVs would you go to over a Tesla?

This right here. In my household, we have a G01 BMW X3 (used to be mine, spouse drives it now) that has wireless CarPlay. I have a Tesla. There's no chance I'd give up the Tesla UI, in favor of CarPlay.

When you look at CarPlay from an objective lens, it's actually rather limited compared modern Tesla software. You really can't multitask with CarPlay like you can with the Tesla UI. Want to pop your trunk or check your tire pressure while you're listening to Apple Music? You're going to be pressing a lot of buttons, and you may even get pushed out of the CarPlay UI.

I have my phone on me 99% of the time. About the only time it comes in handy is when, at night, I might run downstairs to get something out of the car and forget that my iPhone is upstairs. Since I have my watch on, I can get in just the same.

Two use cases I see for this:

1) Runners, I would not have my phone with me if I were doing anything very active.

2) Last June, I was riding as a passenger. We were in an area with zero cell coverage and expected to have no service for the next few days. The car was set to "walk away lock". So with no service, the owner put her phone in "airplane mode" to conserve power and left the phone in the car. (It kind of makes sense not to carry your phone around with you if there is no cell service.)

The doors locked because the car could not see the phone. It would have been nice to have a backup

Technically the 2021+ S/X all have UWB support for iOS devices.
