With iOS 18.2, Apple has introduced some of the most exciting Apple Intelligence features, including Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand, ChatGPT integration with Siri, and more. For those who aren't able to install iOS 18.2 yet, we did an overview of everything new so you can get an idea of what to expect as the beta testing process continues.

Image Playground is available as a dedicated app, but you can also use the features right in Messages. With Image Playground, you can write a prompt and get a cartoon-like image in return. You can build on your creations by adding different categories and sections, and you can get images modeled after you and your friends.

Images that you have made to look like you or a friend look fairly spot on, and it's a fun version of things like Bitmoji from other social networks. There's also an Image Wand feature in the Notes app that lets you circle a word or a blank space to generate an image that goes with what you've written. On the iPad, you can draw a rough sketch and have Image Wand whip up something better.

Genmoji is similar to Image Playground, but it's for generating custom emoji characters. If you've ever wanted an emoji that's not available, Genmoji solves that problem. You can make up whatever you want and use it just like an emoji.

ChatGPT integration isn't on by default, but once you enable it, you can send any Siri request over to ChatGPT instead. ChatGPT can generate writing from scratch, create photorealistic images, and answer any of your queries that Siri can't. Information from ChatGPT is relayed through Siri, and no account is required.

Visual Intelligence is for iPhone 16 users. It uses the Camera Control button to identify objects and places around you. It'll tell you what it sees, and if you point it at a place like a restaurant, you can see things like ratings and hours.

More information on the specific Apple Intelligence features included in the beta can be found in our launch post, and we'll have an article coming soon on all of the other changes in the iOS 18.2 update.

As of right now, iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 are limited to developers, and the betas are only available for Apple Intelligence devices. A public beta will come at some point in the future.

Note that Apple Intelligence is still a beta, and Apple is working on improving it. There can be unexpected results with Image Playground and Genmoji, but Apple is taking feedback and will be making changes over time.

Still on the waiting list - also disappointed that the newest features (playground, Genmoji, ChatGPT, etc… do not work if you switch to one of the new ”supported Apple Intellegence languages”

Guess we wait until 18.3 but then those new feature will make us wait till 18.4 but then the on screen awareness will be unavailable in Canadian English until 18.5 or 19…..

as I said below this was fixed by me setting my device region back to Canada

so you still have to keep it on US instead of Canadian in 18.2?

"the most exciting Apple Intelligence features"? ChatGPT, alright, I can get that, even if I don't personally agree with it, but I haven't heard any kind of excitement for genmoji, image playground, or image wand. I don't think it's exactly a killer feature that's going to draw all kinds of people to iPhone.

Yes

i switched to English Canadian and playground told me I needed to enable Apple Intelligence and the ChatGPT section within Apple Intelligence settings vanished until I set it back to US…. Rather disappointing

plus even the ChatGPT integration is underwhelming considering it doesn’t read out the response and if you ask it to a text just comes up saying text it doesn’t support text to speech

I wonder why then that the release notes mention support for these other languages 🤔

It's a first beta of 18.2. Not everything is going to work as it should.

I’m going to try restarting my devices, maybe it’s just a bug - that or just the first round of Apple Intelligence features are supported in other languages (18.1 stuff)

I’ve set me Siri and language to English UK and ChatGPT shows up for me.
Mine shows it works but when I try a chat gpt interaction I get ‘sorry something went wrong’. Set to UK region.

Weird even after a restart it still doesn't work for English Canada in fact mine reverts to the old Siri…. But settings “say” Apple Intellence is on

I have Chat GPT working in the UK, and it's waiting to activate writing tools. You have to make sure that Siri and iPhone are set to the same region/ language and then I restarted the device

Oh fixed it -

I had my device still set as region: US but Apple Intellegence set to English Canada which apparently that made it freak out

now I’m just waiting for them to grant me access to the Image Creation

my criticism of Siri not reading anything ChatGPT generates is still valid and a letdown though
i do applaud them for allowing us to remove the one thing that when they announced it stood out as an annoyance which was Siri asking if she could get our permission to use ChatGPT every single time.

I am having trouble getting set up for ChatGPT using my work account that is a ChatGPT Team account. Does anyone know if this feature works with a Team account?

It's all geared towards teens and tweens.

I'm a 38 yo man, and I am excited for genmoji so I can finally have my cowboy wearing sunglasses and crying.

I'm in the US and still on the waitlist for the playground/genmoji but ChatGPT is working well. I do wish that if you click the side button and get a ChatGPT response that it read it out. I did notice that if you invoke Siri via voice, it will read the response, such as "Siri, ask ChatGPT to give me today's tech news"

Actually... just found out if you ask "Siri, what's in today's tech news" it works just the same. If it can't answer it, it grabs it from ChatGPT with "that was from from ChatGPT" spoken at the end. So awesome. You can also ask follow up questions when it's done speaking.

Ok, so now it's just giving me the text and not reading... so it's random when it works right. Even if my phone is facing down, it just says "here's an answer from ChatGPT" which is not helpful! lol

All of this is so hard to find. They should add a dedicated "Apple Intelligence" menu in settings and not just make SOME parts of it part of the Siri menu. I am confident that 90% of my friends or family will not even be aware that those features exist.

Even I had to wait for this article to figure out how to access these new things like the Genmoji

Dare I say, they should copy Samsung:

A slip in the usual MacRumors quality with the video thumbnail: iOS 18.2 is not "Out now", it is in Beta release only, not 'out' for the general public.
