I saw that, thanks... but there are 3 apn settings- Item 0 (7), Item 1 (48) and Item 2 (6)... as well as "APNEditabilityTypemask" (7)

It seems like he just replaced the entire section with just that entry. Worth a shot - just keep a untouched copy in case you break something. 55 covers visual voice mail, mms, data and tethering.

Superb!

Got this working in 15 minutes. My only glitch was having to do a second reset of Network Settings to get the slider to appear. Many thanks to the OP.

Diode, with all the updates throughout this thread, would you please update the first post for ATT with iPhone4 w/ 4.0.1, etc?

Great work and very informative... Thanks!

I got it working on my iPhone4 but with the original carrier.plist file. I originally installed the patched file but then reverted back to the original due to not being able to connect. How is that possible and do I need to update to the patched carrier.plist file?

Not really sure if this is related but since performing this modification I'm no longer able to connect to my companies WPA Enterprised Wifi (non-enterprise wifi is fine).

Has anybody noticed a conflict with the SBSettings Tether Toggle?

I installed it last night after having preformed this hack 10 days ago and it kept sending the phone into SafeMode. After I uninstalled the Toggle the phone worked again.

Possible that the toggle is expecting a "cleaner" tether installation?

Quick follow up. There is a second tethering toggle that does not crash the phone like above. Its in Cydia under SBSettings Tethering Toggle version 1.0.1 by Filipe Pina.

All right I have a question. I did this and it worked and I can tether my iPhone 4 on my MacBook running snow leopard BUT when I try to tether to my gfs MacBook on just leopard, it doesn't show my iPhone as one of the network options like it does on my computer. Anyone know why?

Are you talking about connecting via USB? If so, make sure the 'iThunesHelper' is running and in the login items for that user account...

This will only help you if you can connect over bluetooth fine but have trouble using USB...

Quick way to check is to see if tethering over USB starts to work when iTunes is open....

Alright I'll try opening iTunes for that. As for bluetooth, I can't seem to get connected to my laptop. After I set it up and put the numbers in my phone that are presented on my laptop, when I try to connect it connects for 2 seconds then quickly disconnects. I don't understand why it does this. Is it a side effect of messing with the commcenter?

Posting this from my GF's tethered laptop as we speak :). All I had to do was open iTunes on her computer LOL. Now if I can only get bluetooth working. It just connects for 2 seconds then disconnects. Anyone else have this problem?

tethering works but no internet for apps

followed these instructions on my JB 3G with 4.0.1 after I reset the network setup tethering works but I no longer have an internet connection for my apps such as Safari even when I turn tethering off

I used to be JB through blackra1n but I crashed and went into a continuous statup loop - had to restore using itunes. I then had to downgrade to 4.0.1 and JB again this time I used jailbreakme.com. I did use iTunes backup to restore my apps and I think I might still have my old profile. My current Profile is unsigned US ATT Tethering from Peacefulinsanity.com. Could this be causing the problem? if so how would I correct it? if not I don't know what could be causing the problem

any help would be appreciated

3g, 4.01 OS

Did the process using the steps in post one. I used the replace carrier option rather than edit. I think its improtant when sshing or however you do it when modifying the file to copy the new one over the old one. This seems to make a difference as you don't want to delete the old file and then add in the new one.

I am not comfortable with ssh so I used iphonefolders from my pc to replace/move the files and ifile's "installer" to load the ccp file.

I robooted after the ccp install as per the instructions, then loaded the carrier file as per instruction and network settings reset. I didn't get the slider, but the default setup tethering.

a reboot, then reset network settings again and it works fine now

I haven't tested whether safari stops working

EDIT
I also have mywi 4.0 installed with rock and a fix and they both can work separatly

it was the profile

JB 3G on 4.0.1

I removed the unsigned Profile - I think it had carried over from my backup when I restored. That did it - now I have tethering and the apps can also connect to the internet.

I also changed my ATT_US.ipcc to 5.5 Official Carrier File that I found a link to on
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/792894/

not sure if this did anything - I'm confident the Profile was the issue. Since everything works I'm leaving it all as is now

You shouldn't have any profiles installed while using this hack.

Are you on edge? Edge only supports 1 connection, while 3G allows you to have multiple simultaneously

thanks a lot for the step by step tutorial and the patch - this works flawlessly on an iPhone4 (4.0.1).
Just like one poster, I had to reset my network settings twice in order to get the tethering slider to show up.
Other than that, I used the patch and the provided carrier.plist file w/o any further modification. SMS/MMS seem to work just fine, haven't tested facetime yet.
Both USB and bluetooth tethering work on my macbook pro with snow leopard.

again - thanks for sharing!

Cant get this to work on o2 UK.

I got past the Set Up Internet Tethering bit and managed to turn it on and plugged it in to my PC and then it changed back to the Setup button and when you click it, it points you towards o2's website to purchase their tethering package.

:(

Battery drain?

Am I just being anal, or does anyone else have a problem with the battery draining a bit faster than normal after using this hack?

My phone was in standby for about an hour and had 11mins of usage (texting), and the battery dropped by 3%
I don't have anything else installed except for the AT&T carrier logo.

I'm asking because normally I could be in standby for 6 hours overnight and I'd still be at 100%
Anyone else notice anything? Thanks

works great for the iphone 4, running 4.0.1

tips...
1. download the carrier.plist file and change the integer to 53 (AT&T). I tried to edit the original plist file from the iphone but it really wasn't a text file.

2. download SBSettings Tethering Toggle version 1.0.1 from cydia. I actually don't know what this does

Got this working in 15 minutes. My only glitch was having to do a second reset of Network Settings to get the slider to appear. Many thanks to the OP.

I'll second the above. It worked like a charm but two resets were required on my iPhone 4. After the first reset, I got the message to change my data plan. Rebooted the device and reset network settings again and it came up and worked like a charm. I used the replace the carrier.plist file method without modification.

iOS 4.0.1 iPhone 4

Tehter slider disappeared

Help... I followed the OP and did everything as instructed. After reboot, I can see the Tether Slider showing up, but once I connected to the PC, it disappeared. Check com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.plist,

It changed from
<key>State</key>
<integer>1023</integer>

back to
<key>State</key>
<integer>1020</integer>

Modified the com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.plist to change the value from 1020 t0 1023 couples of times using iFile, but didn't help. whenever I connected to the PC via USB, the Tether slider disappeared.

I am using iPhone 4/ 4.0.1 JB, Unlocked...

Any ideas what keeps changing the com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.plist?
