Both hl2 and tf2 run poorly for me, tf2 is worse, but maybe because I am running 10.5.8?

And yes I did have sound problems.

I don't have a problem running it, but does anyone else get stuck in a lag lockdown?

Periodically, I'll just be frozen and it's like the game stops. 15-20 seconds later I'm free to move around again and it's as if the game never stopped, so I know it's not the servers I'm playing on.

TF2 runs like a dream ingame, but will crash constantly while loading maps. Other than that, no problem. :D

10.6.3 may not be perfect, and could definitely be improved with future driver updates, but 10.5.8 isn't going anywhere, we have pushed it as far as we can.

I am trying to get into a game right now, I am on the loading screen and all I am getting is a beachball so I can't even determine how the game play will be yet

edit: after it beachballing for 10 minutes I finally gave up by CMD + Tab, right clicked on the TF2 icon and said application is not responding. I forced quit it and tried doing it again, I am on my third attempt right now trying to get this to work and its stuck on the same screen...I always get stuck on "sending client info"

2nd edit: after I am finally able to get into a game, the gameplay is horrible! I applied the settings that the this thread starter said on the first page to no avail. Gameplay is somewhat smooth when I am in the control area, once I get out in the field it becomes so laggy its impossible to do anything. I am talking 1 frame every 1 second, also the sound either completely stops or gets very choppy. Both the gameplay sound, and the players voices. I couldn't take it anymore, I had to quit......

I have found anti aliasing to be a hog on OSX. That would be the first thing I'd disable to see if it makes a game more playable. Maybe they have addressed this in 10.6.4

I must say that TF2 still plays like crap on the latest 10.6.4, I have no hopes for this release.

It's terrible for me. Portal was playable. If somehow my Bootcamp failed and could never work again then yea - I'd play Portal on OSX. The HL series and TF2 run quite badly at the moment.

Funnily enough since the TF2 update earlier today my PC version is running a lot faster. I could even enable HDR and performance wasn't affected.

Time for a new Mac :)

I haven't had any issues playing either TF2 or Portal on my MBP (1st gen unibody 15")

I didn't have to turn off all the good stuff to make it work either. Currently my only issue is being a huge noob in TF2 lol.

Plays perfect without any changing of settings on my mbp 40fps + at all times.

Mine worked perfectly right after download without tweaking anything on my early 2009 13" MacBook.

I <3 being a pyro.

I get terrible performance no matter what setting I use. I tired playing with everything low/off at 800x600 and still only got a little over 20fps  I hoe there is a fix/patch that will fix this. Half-Life 2, the Half-Life 2 Episode 1 & 2, Counter Strike Source Beta, and Portal all run fine on medium settings at 1280x800 with a consistent 45fps which I am very happy with on my MacBook. I can even run Killing Floor on the default high setting at 1280x800 with at least 50fps but I think the engine it uses is less demanding tha the Source Engine.

On a 2010 15" i7 MBP, depending on the map, I'd say I usually get about 40-70fps with AA and VSync off, but all other settings maxed, at native res (1680x1050).

I do wonder about another performance issue though. Does TF2 take a longer time to load and disconnect from servers relative to the average FPS multiplayer? I don't have many other games to compare to, but TF2 seems to take a great deal more time. I could likely load up 5 different servers in Call of Duty 4 (Mac version) in the same time TF2 loads just one.

Side note. I only realized this recently. Expose works within Steam games. Very convenient.

Performance isn't too bad. It could definitely be better, but I wouldn't say it is bad. But it doesn't run too bad if I lower the settings, although it loads extremely slowly.

Performance is pretty good under the 9600. 9400 is acceptable too since I play in a window. It does take a long time to load though. But then again, there isn't much load time between matches which is always a plus.

So it's not only me that thinks that. Does anyone know if it loads/disconnects similarly slow in Windows?

I think this has a lot to do with the servers. I've noticed some slow level loading under Windows 7 lately even on the same servers that used to load quickly. Now if you're talking 5 minutes to join a game that is excessive, but taking around 1 minute or so on level change isn't a big deal to me. I'm still usually one of the first players in the server after a level change even when I think the loading is slow.

.

Thanks for sharing. Hoping you're right. Sure makes more sense than my previous assumption that it had to do with the hard drive, which of course isn't amenable by any Valve patch.

So I timed COD4 vs TF2, just outta curiosity. 15 seconds for COD4. 2min, then 20 sec for 2 maps in TF2. Never had a 2min load time before. I'd say under a min is closer to average.

I have been trying all weekend to have a go of this game while it was free.

But I spent ages just trying to get it to install. re-installed steam 3 times because it would just crash when it got to the end of the create local cache bit of the install.

When I finally do get it to install it takes about 20 hours just to download.

By which time the free weekend was over.

Then I read this whole performance issue, I nearly gave up on the game.

But I decided to buy it anyway and give it a try. I'm glad I did.

I used the settings in my screen shot there at the resolution of 2560x1600 and it runs smoooooth as butter.

I couldn't be happier. It's such a fun game. After a little tweaking of controls all is good.

Obviously I had to go through the whole install pain just to get to the end result, but it was worth it.

Now I just wish they'd release Modern Warfare 2

In case you didn't already notice--and since it sounds like you're running above 30fps--you should probably bump up Anisotropic all the way to 16x. In my limited experience, it has seemingly no affect on fps. And the Texture and Shadow detail settings can be bumped up to "Very High" with also little affect on fps compared to your present setting of "High."

Personal preference: I like Field of view (and view model in Multiplayer/Advanced) at 90. More peripheral vision.

Me too... And Bad Company 2. Though I doubt even the i7 MBP could run that game on high at native res.

Thanks for those suggestions. I don't really know a hell of a lot about these video settings and what does what.

I'll give them a try.

*edit* ok, tried those settings. Figured out how to read FPS, and it seems to average around 75-80FPS

Welcome. I didn't know much either just about a month ago, but then I bought a few games, and read a lot and asked around forums for help. I feel I have a pretty good basic grasp of it now.

With your solid FPS--and I'm guessing desktop GPU because of your resolution--you should try 4x Anti-Aliasing. You might still get 30+ fps. As long as it is consistently above 30, you're good.

I'll see how I go, but I have noticed on those huge multiplayer maps when there are a lot of weapons going off around it can slow down to the mid 30's quite quickly.

What benefit does upping the AA give you?
