Checking my .mac email at work on a PC using Firefox is now borderline unusable. About half the emails fail to send and leaving a page on me.com for more than a few minutes essentially causes my computer to freeze. What's the point of a .mac account if it can't be accessed acceptably well from ANY perfectly functional computer? Apple really needs to work on this service. I have stopped sending emails from my personal account outside of home and use my work email to do so, which as an MS Outlook/Exchange-based system actually works anywhere I've tried to use it. If Apple can't fix the email usefulness of .mac, I will certainly cancel my service when it's up for renewal.

iDisk outside the USA is utterly utterly useless it's a travesty to be paying for something that can only be described as a poor e-mail account.
That remains my major complaint. I'd probably have a handful of copper pennies for every email I have received from Apple support asking me to be patient because they are busy upgrading and big things are on the way… heh…

Their junk mail filtering is pants too.
That seems to work for me. As well as email and calenders.

…and like a prize sucker I renewed last week.
*Hangs head in shame*

Same here. My experience with it has been so good that it almost makes me think the problems some are still having are user error. That's probably not the case, but I've just never had a major issue. In fact, I've had more issues with Gmail recently than I have had with MobileMe mail.

Your reply almost makes me think that some are a bit ignorant of the problems other users are facing. But that is probably not the case... ;)
Have you ever used Mobile Me outside USA? Maybe uploading something onto iDisk? You can virtually watch your bits walking away with the dazzling speed of something like 2.5 KB/s (And yes, I am logged onto a very fast network) Or updating your webpage with pictures and a movie clip during a trip abroad? (I can update my webpage which sits on a mirror server in a supposedly third world country like Malaysia from Europe with no issues, as a comparison) Try that, come back, and report your findings ;)

Hence the world "almost."

:p Exactly. Same here.

I will say that I am "a bit ignorant" on the problems others have faced, simply because I haven't faced them myself. It sucks that some people don't get the same functionality I do, but I would suspect that the overwhelming majority of users have had an experience more like mine than like yours. People who have few/no complaints rarely post threads on message boards stating "all clear" or "no problems here."

That might be so, but still I find the amount of complains about MM "a bit" on the high side. And I ask again, have you ever used MM outside USA? ;)

Nope and I doubt I ever will. My work doesn't take me abroad, and though I've been to several countries in Europe, and to Japan, in the last few years, I've never had the need to access those types of files while there.

Here's hoping I won't have to in the near future.

I really wanted to use MobileMe since you can find it for a reasonable $70 online, but there's no way to use the e-mail for a custom domain name. I ended up getting a nice hosting package from MacHighway.com for $5 per month.

More Than "Inconvenient"

This whole issue is more than just "annoying". My iMac is in Berlin (Germany, not Connecticut) and I am in the Nashville area with a new MacBook and an address book that is B L A N K blank. How nice. I DID .cvs the contacts from the Mindspring webmail into the Mac Mail Address Book but that does NOT include the GROUPS that I need and thez of a magnitude and scope, e.g., do not actually KNOW the persons involved ... a newsy letter deal .. so I am SOL in that reconstructing the GROUPS is not an option plus I have not the time no the mental energy.

Is there a file on the iMac bowels that I can have e-mailed to me in Tennessee? (Jahahhaha .. utterly wishful-nonthinking)

While I do agree with the issues people are having with MM (as I am too) I have to say that you guys outside the U.S., please stop acting like you are the only victims from Apple's customer base. Every time something in the Apple world goes wrong, the folks (the UK complains the most) outside the U.S. cry like it's only happening to you. Please, in the name of decency, stop acting like the U.S. gets preferential treatment and the rest of you are poor victims. I PAY FOR THIS SERVICE TOO AND THE U.S. GETS NO BETTER TREATMENT.
Sheesh.

I live in the US and it is flawless for me, emails come in seconds, I can update a contact on my phone and in under 5 seconds my MBAir updates my address book. I have lots of stuff on my iDisk and it's fine, many pics uploaded. I have 4 accounts running on a family pak, haven't heard a single complaint from the other 3.

I have had MM since it came out (and .Mac for years earlier) and it has been a very bumpy ride for me.

Whether it was the terrible start (down time, not working, etc...) or problems loading on FireFox (which got fixed within a few days a few weeks ago I believe), I just keep dealing with little things it seems every week or so

Don't get me wrong....I use it daily and use iDisk and Calender all the time so it is WORTH the money but it still is extremely annoying dealing with the constant little problems that seem to pop up for me,.

Bandwith with your ISP?

Okay, here's what might be causing your problem.

It's not MobileMe, it might be your ISP throttling your bandwidth for using MobileMe.

For me, I have Verizon DSL, which provides unlimited bandwidth (as promised) so I have no problem with MobileMe whatsoever. Everything syncs perfectly, including iDisk and iWeb web sites.

The only thing I can come up with the solution is to switch your ISP.

I had as few issues with Push e-mail to my iPhone but that got sorted and i've never had any problems, I uploaded a 2 GB file, just left my computer on overnight and it was done in the morning. What i would like is an ability to post my calender online for friends and family but i'm quite happy. Besides after having it free for 6 months everyone was using that e-mail address.

Was a paying customer of the .mac service for 10 years. Initially thought awesome syncing over the air with mobile me I am in for life. But their service just plain sucks. I understand if it was free. But, to pay 100+ a year for a service that is unreliable is unacceptable.

I cancelled my service I am currently paying for a exchange hosted service
for all my contact info (email, calendar etc) and using sugar sync for data.
Combined a year I am paying cheaper then I would with mobileme and I personally think my combination tops mobilme in every sense.

Funny that i resorted to "activestink" but is more reliable than mobilefail.

Goodbye apple. Your internet mac experience is truly a huge failure.

Its interesting how someone can use a service for over 10 years even though it did not exist that long ago (the precursor to .Mac was introduced in 2000 and .Mac was introduced in 2002).

It's not $100+, unless you get the family pack. It's $99 officially, and you can get it as low as $60-something or $70-something through ebay or other deals. Even the family pack can be had for under $100, if you look hard enough.

Anyway, MobileMe is slow on the iDisk, but let's face it using an internet connection for extra storage is not the same as using a flash drive and definitely will not be for a long time.

The iDisk does come in handy for data backups though (including some Application settings which connect to MobileMe automatically). I like having my school and business files in the cloud so that in case my backups fail or I need to access them somewhere on the go, they're there.

The e-mail is great, I like being able to check it on any computer as web-based e-mail (the only gripe here is that its so picky about which browsers it works with which eliminates some public libraries including my university library). At the same time, when I am at home or on my own computer I like to use the regular Mail app instead.

I also like not having my e-mails be appended with advertisements for whatever e-mail service I am using as many free e-mail addresses do.

I also own a domain, but I just set it to forward to my MobileMe account.

I don't have an iPhone yet, but e-mail synching there is going to be sweet, I imagine.

As far as Photo Gallery or Calendar, well I don't use those features at all yet. Though it is nice to know my contact list is synched so I don't accidentally lose any numbers or e-mails if I forget to back it up, and since I like to change computers often its also good not to have to worry about importing/exporting my bookmarks.

Overall, MobileMe is worth it for me. It is not a bad value at all. If Apple could work out some of the issues with it, it would become a truly world class service.

Ditto - Trying to get a Mac, Google Apps, and a Blackberry to sync (all wirelessly) is a royal PITA that I only just got working after 2 weeks of trial and error. My iPhone / MobileMe combination worked from Day 1. Setting up MobileMe on my work PC and synching to Outlook has been a failure so far unless I do one-way synchs and overwrite Outlook every time.

You just have to keep it all 100% Apple (Safari, iPhone, etc) and then it works. Sound familiar?

I will admit the load times for iWeb and iDisk are pathetically slow though. It has me 2nd guessing a re-up this year. I can probably find a hosted exchange server and www host for the same price. $6.50 a month for MobileMe is pretty cheap though (paid $79 for it) - come to think of it, I may not be able to duplicate everything MM offers at that price.

Then, when you do cancel, you get 15 popup windows  in a single day telling you that your MobileMe account is expired.
How does one make that stop?

MobileMe is layered over the horrible dot mac. they never fixed dot mac - instead of scrapping it and starting over, they enhanced the services on top of a broken system. RUN AWAY!

Aside from some hiccups during the transition between .Mac and MobileMe, I can't say I've had any serious problems.

Except with the name. "MobileMe." Whoever came up with that name needs to have his marketing degree revoked.
