I have three - Series 6 SS, Series 7 alu, Ultea. Series 6 SS could be upgraded, mainly for battery life, screen size and always on display. But I don’t wear that one that often…

That would be interesting:
Ad more external sensors and more training metrics on watchOS.

I think Apple will do more on watchOS. The AW Hardware is good enough (except the AW glas -> scratches) and since the last 2-3 AW: there is nothing new.

But not in Europe. Thanks😎

Yes prices increase, but what will happen:
You will have more price discounts:
AW Ultra on Amazon is always 900 €. (Almost 10%)
Same for Garmin Fenix 7:
699 -> 540€.

Wearables demand has decreased.
Mr nice - it’s not a lot to ask. Ant+ support and customization.

Fenix 7 is a far better watch for athletes.

by interference, do you mean when the watch hits an achievement for the day and kicks your blood earphones off and turns the speaker on your iphone on instead and then takes forever to connect back???

EVERY TIME I will be listening to some podcast at a sensitive point - and famil with kids will hear about masturbation in a CT scanner (it was a medical podcast where they were trying to identify the impacts of sex on the brain) or a true crime pod cast where it with blurt out some grotesque detail.
I realize now that my post was little curious.🙂

I am listening to music at work every day, using my iPhone 12PM and AirPods Pro 2.
When I use my watch the music stops 3-4 times a day. And then I have to take up my phone and press play on the screen.
I have tried using several music apps and also tried downloaded and streamed music.
I have changed in settings how the AirPods should connect to my iPhone.
I have tried “automatic” and “the last connection to this iPhone”
The same issue happens.
When I leave my watch at home and only using my 12PM and my AirPods Pro 2 it’s just works. Never an issue🙂
I was sure for a long time that my AirPods was the problem, but now I’m not.

And for your story about the podcast with “special effects“ it made me laugh a little bit. Sorry for that😁

Display has changed, quite a large increment there ....and who doesnt love faster charging...

Small things can make a BIG difference...
Sure it’s always small changes that accumulate but what you can buy now is basically the exact same thing as before. Even the software and ring system are completely outdated.

Along with the iPhone, the Apple Watch is one of the products that Apple has been updating on an annual basis, and it is one of the devices that we can count on seeing this fall.

Rumors about new Apple Watch models are often overshadowed by iPhone rumors, but we do get tidbits of information here and there. This guide aggregates everything we know about the Apple Watch Series 9.

An Iterative Update

Apple in 2022 focused its development resources on the Apple Watch Ultra, and we didn't see a slew of new features for the standard Series 8. We're expecting the same general situation this year - Apple is working on future Apple Watch technology for the larger-sized model, and rumors suggest that we're going to see smaller updates for the Series 9 with few new features at the current time.

Processor Improvements

The S8 chip in the Apple Watch Series 8 is the same as the S7 chip in the Apple Watch Series 7, which offered the same performance as the S6 in the Apple Watch Series 6.

There have been no notable improvements to the Apple Watch processor for a few years now, so we could see an updated S9 chip with some minor performance improvements.

Bluetooth

Apple added Bluetooth 5.3 to the Apple Watch Ultra, and in 2023, we could see it expanded to the Series 9. Apple has been slowly updating its product lineup with the latest Bluetooth standard.

Battery Life

Any update to the processor could potentially result in small battery life improvements, though we are not counting on major updates. Apple could also use that efficiency boost for additional always on display functionality or other feature tweaks.

Other Features

With the exception of a new chip, the Series 9 is expected to offer the same feature set as the Series 8, with full details on the Series 8's capabilities in our Apple Watch roundup.

A New Apple Watch Ultra?

The Apple Watch Ultra is a new product in the Apple Watch lineup as of 2022, so we don't yet know if it's going to be updated on an annual basis.

apple-watch-ultra-cyber.jpg

We have not heard rumors of a 2023 version of the Apple Watch Ultra, but there are details on a 2024 model, so Apple may wait until 2024 to refresh the device.

A New Apple Watch SE?

Apple has not historically refreshed the Apple Watch SE annually, and there is no word on whether there will be a 2023 refresh. The SE was updated in 2022, so it is unlikely.

Future Features

We don't have a whole lot to look forward to with the Apple Watch Series 9 as of yet, but there are some future technologies that Apple will add to the Apple Watch that will make for more exciting updates at a later date.
  • MicroLED Display - As soon as 2024, Apple is rumored to be adopting microLED technology for the Apple Watch, using custom displays that it designs in-house, similar to how the company does chip designs. The microLED display will be used for a high-end Apple Watch, likely the Apple Watch Ultra. MicroLED technology will bring brighter and more vibrant colors, plus improved viewing angles.
  • Larger display for Apple Watch Ultra - Apple is working on a new version of the Apple Watch Ultra with an even larger 2.1-inch display, an update that could come alongside the transition to microLED.
  • Noninvasive Blood Glucose Monitoring - Apple has been working on a noninvasive blood glucose monitoring function for the Apple Watch for years now, and has made enough progress that the concept is now at a point where it is functional, viable, and ready to be used in a future Apple Watch with some refinement. Noninvasive blood glucose monitoring is still years away at this point, but when it's introduced, it will mark one of the biggest updates to the Apple Watch.
Launch Date

Apple refreshes the Apple Watch on an annual basis alongside the new iPhone models, so we can expect to see an Apple Watch announcement this September, followed by a launch a week or two later.

Looks like I'll be saving some money nothing worth updating for. I think that was part of Apple creating the Ultra model. The Ultra has some tech and design features for people actually doing extreme sports. Reality Apple knew most of the buyers would just be buying it because it bigger and shouts "I buy Apple because I think it makes me look cool".

Of course they are also the same people that wonder why do people keep stealing my stuff??? Just because I leave my iPhone and Macbook out in public view, pay with Apple Pay to show off my iPhone and always looking at my Apple watch so people can see it. I hope they don't notice my Tesla in the handicapped parking spot. Same type of guys back in my day who'd have a Porsche, condo in the Marina, and expensive suits to get a hot girl to go out with them. Trouble is they are so in debt they could only afford to take the girl to Denny's and she would say she's going to the restroom and then leave.

All 4 of my Series 5 watches are still going strong. Not seeing a huge reason to upgrade so far, other than the nice new displays from the S7/8, so this just makes my decision to ride them until they die even easier.

How can this thing be a workable web browser. That’s never going to be practical.

Music could be nice for emergencies. But Apple wants you to buy AirPods so I wouldn’t hold my breath.

The main appeal is health and sports. If you’re not into that, then it is indeed nothing more than an annoying notification gadget.
I don’t totally disagree, but I was browsing WWW in the early 2000s on a hacked flipfone RAZR. Of course it was not ideal, but it was extremely useful. I’d guess the flat iWatch has higher resolution, and certainly a LOT more processor than the RAZR ever did. There are already roundabout ways of web browsing on the iWatch, but Apple’s hacky way to do that is clunkier than my RAZR was. Apple could optimize it if they felt like it.

ETA: the thing about the RAZR, is that it was completely open and hackable, down to the last bit. Because of that there was a little cult following that made that teeny phone, do everything. The iWatch is so locked down, even if you pay to be a developer, all you get is a lousy subset of access, and lots of people don’t even bother trying because of that.

The Ultra greatly appeals to me (albeit for things that have nothing to do with support for seriously extreme conditions) and more than the larger size of Series 8. Then again, I've worn an Apple Watch at two different points in time and decided that it wasn't worth it. Cellular is the one thing I haven't yet tried (and I think, especially on a watch with that large of a screen, it could be the game changer I've always wanted/needed the watch to be for me).

Tell me how apple makes a better sports watch?

I didn't say they made a better sports watch. I said a 10 year old Garmin watch can't do 1/10 of what the current Apple Watch can do.

I think Garmin makes great watches. I own and have commented in the watch forums on how much I like the Epix 2. But that's not at all what we were talking about.

I feel it's more that Apple makes a better smartwatch for people who exercise but don't need all the functionality of a Garmin watch. Like you said, Garmin occupies a niche market for hardcore fitness enthusiasts. That is its strength (it doesn't seem like Apple will be able to attack this niche market anytime soon), it is also Garmin's weakness (because they will have a harder time trying to appeal to people outside of this niche segment).

For example, Garmin watches may sport longer battery life, but it sure seems like the supposed lack of battery life hasn't impact sales of the Apple Watch one bit. If anything, it seems like Apple is comfortable maintaining an 18-hour battery life threshold for the watch and channel excess juice into other features such as AoD and extra sensors. This tells you that battery life by itself is not a sufficient selling point for your product (ask Fitbit how that turned out).

This is admittedly cheating, but the Apple Watch integrates with Lumihealth, a collaboration between Apple and my country's health authority which lets me earn points and rewards when I hit certain fitness milestones. It's this gamification aspect that gives me that little added push to go jogging as often as my schedule will allow.

The Apple Watch has a wider variety of watch faces (even if you can't submit third party faces). So I can have Siri watch face active during the day while I am at work, then switch to a modular watch face when I want to exercise after work. It's more versatile that way.

What will happen, I suspect, is that as the Ultra Apple Watch goes on to gain additional fitness-tracking features, it will slowly but surely steal existing Garmin watch users who were already on the fringe.

I really do want to upgrade my Series 4. The always on display released a few years ago was tempting but not really a big improvement over the 4. So alas, I keep waiting on some sort of notable upgrade. It looks like the 9 still may not have it. I keep hoping for a nice display, sensor or processor bump. Luckily my 4 is doing great!
I’m in the same boat. I have a series 4 and have yet to see a compelling reason to replace it.

The only thing tempting me right now is the all-day battery life on the Ultra but, since I don’t run any more, that’s not sufficiently tempting enough to justify the price at the moment.

A workable web browser? May be you'd also want a spreadsheet app with that?
Many smartwatches have a browser and it’s great to open links someone sends via text message (perhaps just to see the headline of an article or some pictures).

Aren’t you already able to do that in an Apple Watch?

Since I'm a huge idiot that has FOMO and the need to upgrade every year... I wouldn't mind if the Ultra was on a 2 year cycle.

Sounds like a nothing burger. If it ends up that way then there isn’t really a compelling reason to upgrade if you even have watch 4 or higher.
Yeah my Series 5 is on it's last legs but I'm holding off for some kind of bigger hardware upgrade and glucose monitoring. sounds like this won't be the year.

I couldnt go back to a series 5 with slow charging and a smaller display...

I am also holding off on a Tesla till they fly.....if you have the money then enjoy the tech now rather than some future far off , possibly never date....
