Well 3x in 15 pro max is just digital chop from main sensor, you really feel that is good?
I don't use 3x on my 15Pro Max, and I felt the 3x camera on the previous generation phone was sub-par. 12MP from the 5x looks better to me than 3x did on my iPhone 14Pro – whether this is due to better optics, better stabilization, the new lens coating, or software, I don't know. Whenever the first ultrawide came out those pictures were terrible and they are really great out of this phone, too.

The 5x is a much more useful zoom range for me, I never felt the 3x was that useful but I also take a lot of Nature photos so things are further from me vs someone who does primarily city photography which I mostly do when traveling and when I do, especially for international trips, I shoot in RAW with a 50mm lens on a DSLR and use the iPhone as a supplement. I never change lenses on my DSLR I use my feet to frame shots.

On the 15PM (and the 14P) 2x as it is is pretty good and the new 1x focal lengths are really great. Raw captures very quickly now and it was annoyingly slow on the 14Pro. This is by far my favorite iPhone since the X or possibly the 7 Plus, I liked both of those a lot.

Apple knocked it out of the park with this phone and just need to fix some annoying OS bugs.

Hopefully every camera gets a 48MP sensor next year, I'd consider an upgrade if there are overall sensor improvements but I really don't want any dimensions to change. The in-hand feel of the 15PM is awesome and I do not want a larger phone than this, and don't want a smaller screen size now that they've reduced the weight. This might be the first iPhone since the 6+ that I keep for multiple years.

This is a 5X shot. The image looks better and clearer on the display but after I take the shot the result is worse.

I think it’s more to do with the post processing increasing sharpness. The post processing since the 14 Pro Max has been quite bad in my opinion.
Yeah, I can’t believe we still don’t have any control over processing. I prefer the shots from my iPhone X to my iPhone 13 mini because of the crazy HDR and over sharpening.

I don't agree.

Coming from a Xiaomi 13 Ultra (and recently also tested a Pixel 8 Pro for a short time) I can say that 15 Pro Max has the best tele I have used in a phone. Especially in low light. That is where it really performs better than the other flagships.

Some examples of low light 5x shots:

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (Stock camera, 5x, 120mm, 1s, f/2.97, ISO 250, 12.19MP)

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (Stock camera, 5x, 120mm, 0.5s, f/2.97, ISO 640, 12.19MP)

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (Stock camera, 5x, 120mm, 0.25s, f/2.97, ISO 400, 12.19MP)

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (Stock camera, 5x, 120mm, 0.17s, f/2.97, ISO 320, 12.19MP)

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (Stock camera, 5x, 120mm, 0.01s, f/2.97, ISO 50, 12.19MP)

And just for comparison, here are two photos taken at the same time with Pixel 8 Pro to compare with the ones above from 15 Pro Max.

Google Pixel 8 Pro (Stock camera, 5x, 110mm, 0.04s, f/2.97, ISO 1165, 12.53MP)

Google Pixel 8 Pro (Stock camera, 5x, 110mm, 0.11s, f/2.97, ISO 564, 12.53MP)

I was skeptical about the 5x at first until I took this 5x with portrait mode!

iPhone 17 Pro should switch to a new design 4x periscope telephoto unit with a 48 mpx sensor. This way, not only better detailed images can be achieved, but the gap between wide to tele will be narrowed as well. Plus, min. focus distance could be improved like seen on Sony Xperia 1 VI. For example Huawei Pura 70 Ultra settles at 3.5x zoom and 50mpx with fantastic results.

I think 4x zoom (96 mm eqv.) would be a sweet spot between magnification and image quality and size optimization. 5x optics & 48 mpx is welcome too, only if Apple can address issues of physical size of the unit. Is 48mpx sensor that tiny made possible yet? I don't wish to carry a brick in my pocket just for the sake of having a super-tele.

Since buying some proper APSC cameras I can really see the difference. The iPhone is great for fun snaps but for anything important I always carry a bigger camera. Both have their place.

Yeah, it’s the  reality distortion field hard at work in regards to the historically mediocre snapshot camera on all iPhones
Marketing: “It’s the greatest camera in an iPhone yet”.
Reality, “it’s still a kinda cruddy but slightly better snapshot camera”

Yeah I think you’re right. For a snapshot camera it’s kinda nice and basically enough for most people.

I think once you use a proper camera you realise the gap in quality - it’s the tiny sensor.

I like the iPhone a lot but not sure I’ll be upgrading it just for the camera anymore. The 15 Pro Max has reached the ‘good enough’ point for snapshots.
