Interview with HTC about the camera, and their own spokesman ironically is echoing the point I made earlier that the smartphone has/is replaced/replacing the digital compact and therefore it's very important to a lot of people....
HTC has a secret weapon for taking on Samsung, and it's not what you think

So if this is HTC's strategy to go up against the competition and to become best known for its camera (arguably the weakest component on the device) it makes even less sense to go 4mp UltraPixel against the 16-20mp competition. Especially as it's the camera that has received most criticism in reviews and such.
Lets hope next year they can break away from low resolution imagery if they really do want to replace the digital compact and become the go-to device for phone cameras...
So I have no idea why the HTC guy would even say this after all the hate their camera has gotten. I do completely disagree with the part about replacing DSLR's. Yes smartphone cameras are now the go to point and shoot, but a professional camera? There is just no way, or reason for Apple, Samsung, or HTC to do this. I mean why would they put that much time and energy into something only a select few people would need/want.
Also look at what technology we have right now. Arguably the best lens we have had on a smartphone to this point is the Nokia 1020 lens. That is not even close to having the software, or the lens quality to be a professional camera. Will the phone makers really see the need to put that much money into the camera when again only a select few will even care. If the camera can take selfies, and take picture of people's kids to post on Facebook. That is all people really need.
