Interview with HTC about the camera, and their own spokesman ironically is echoing the point I made earlier that the smartphone has/is replaced/replacing the digital compact and therefore it's very important to a lot of people....

HTC has a secret weapon for taking on Samsung, and it's not what you think
http://bgr.com/2014/04/18/htc-camera-selfie-market/

So if this is HTC's strategy to go up against the competition and to become best known for its camera (arguably the weakest component on the device) it makes even less sense to go 4mp UltraPixel against the 16-20mp competition. Especially as it's the camera that has received most criticism in reviews and such.

Lets hope next year they can break away from low resolution imagery if they really do want to replace the digital compact and become the go-to device for phone cameras...

So I have no idea why the HTC guy would even say this after all the hate their camera has gotten. I do completely disagree with the part about replacing DSLR's. Yes smartphone cameras are now the go to point and shoot, but a professional camera? There is just no way, or reason for Apple, Samsung, or HTC to do this. I mean why would they put that much time and energy into something only a select few people would need/want.

Also look at what technology we have right now. Arguably the best lens we have had on a smartphone to this point is the Nokia 1020 lens. That is not even close to having the software, or the lens quality to be a professional camera. Will the phone makers really see the need to put that much money into the camera when again only a select few will even care. If the camera can take selfies, and take picture of people's kids to post on Facebook. That is all people really need.

I decided to sell my M7 and buy the M8 through Tmobile and so far it is one of the best decision I have made.

The build quality is amazing on this phone. Calls and receptions are way better than the M7. Speakers sounds crisp and amazing its like having a bose speaker on my phone.

The camera is not as bad as everyone thinks it is. I am enjoying the U focus feature.

The LCD screen is amazing on a 5 inch display. The sense UI is great. Below is a picture I took of my son with the M8 camera (No editing).

I checked out the M8 yesterday and the one thing that sorta bothered me was the onscreen buttons. I don't like that it takes up real estate making the 5 inch screen seem smaller than it is; especially with the keyboard active.

I think it's a poorly designed phone. If you know you can't get rid of the black bottom bezel then just keep last year's button placement and offer a 5.2" screen. On-screen buttons plus that thick bottom bezel looks terrible IMO.

I thought they'd bother me too, but 90% of the time they don't. It's only occasionally when in an app such as a game where they don't disappear or go into immersive mode do they bother me.

It doesn't bother me either. The screen is big enough that I don't find it annoying.

Mac, have you tried voice on it? I remember you mentioned something about waiting for a code from your provider.

I will tell you, its like they are in the same room as you, i make a lot of calls and it is the best i have had on any phone, 5S, great on speaker phone too. Very clear. Bluetooth is great in car and with a ifusion i use in my office too.
Reception is good too. If you are after a phone to uses as a phone you can't go wrong.

Yes .... At the moment its sim locked to O2 Ireland. I want to unlock it from their network via the unlock code.

I have requested the unlock code from them - they tell me they don't have it on record and have requested it from HTC and will give me it as soon as they receive it.

Sadly its been 2 weeks and I'm still waiting. :(

If it runs kitkat it shouldn't be able to install apps on the SD

^ they issue you an 8 digit code. You input that after inserting another carriers sim at the log in screen. Once entered the phone reboots and is unlocked permanently.

Will try installing something to SD. Samsung have added the modification to allow it regardless of kit Kat, so will check if I can do same on my one.

Ok yes you can. You simply go into application management, select the app downloaded and in the list of details simply click move and it will ask if you want to move app to sd card....

So yes apps can be installed to ad card.

I replaced my 5S with a M8 and it is my business and personal phone. I get a day and half no worries. It does take longer to charge than a 5S. If he uses it for calls a lot it has great clarity and reception. Speaker phone is great too. Its a great business phone. Camera not as good as 5S but i sold my 5S and bought a Sony A6000. NFC and wifi works great with the M8.

Excellent. He considered the S5 but I knew that the M8 gets better battery life then the S5 and he would never replace the battery anyway.
