Interview with HTC about the camera, and their own spokesman ironically is echoing the point I made earlier that the smartphone has/is replaced/replacing the digital compact and therefore it's very important to a lot of people....

HTC has a secret weapon for taking on Samsung, and it's not what you think
http://bgr.com/2014/04/18/htc-camera-selfie-market/

But HTC*believes that by closing the gap on dedicated cameras, it can attract an even wider audience while trumping the competition.

Speaking with*Vodafone, HTC’s camera expert Symon Whitehorn said that the phone camera will continue to be a vital aspect of the industry’s growth and development.

“As smartphones have become people’s primary camera, we expect more of them,” says Whitehorn. “That’s why we’ve put so much investment into the camera – because smartphone cameras take the majority of our images now. We already outperform a lot of compact point and shoot cameras, but we want to approach the performance of regular cameras. Every generation of our cameras seems to close that gap.”

Whitehorn believes that within two years*consumers will have a hard time justifying a camera purchase as the differences between a flagship phone camera and a DSLR become*nearly imperceptible. Even optical zooming in a smartphone is only 12-18 months away in Whitehorn’s estimation.

So if this is HTC's strategy to go up against the competition and to become best known for its camera (arguably the weakest component on the device) it makes even less sense to go 4mp UltraPixel against the 16-20mp competition. Especially as it's the camera that has received most criticism in reviews and such.

Lets hope next year they can break away from low resolution imagery if they really do want to replace the digital compact and become the go-to device for phone cameras...

You missed the point.

You argued earlier that the camera was not important and that everyone would have a dedicated camera instead, and here Contrary to your standpoint HTC themselves are saying similar to with what I was saying earlier.

The camera is important, just maybe not to you...

Geez i was joking:rolleyes: So serious, what are you the camera phone guru?:) Maybe in a few years there will be a phone camera good enough to replace a good camera, there isn't now though.
Or maybe you are just into selfies anyway so you are sweet with your M8:eek:

How about telling us what you think of the phone, forget the camera we get it, its crap and if you can't blow up a shot to A4 size and print it and see the pimple on someones nose 1/2 a mile away well then forget it.

No never used front camera :p

And no the camera is not crap, it's just limited.

As for the rest of the phone, it's really nice but I'm unable to judge call quality / messaging etc until I get my unlock code from O2 & HTC

Phone is blazing fast, audio is great, apps open straight away and multitasking is a breeze. Build quality is better than the M7. It's a very solid phone, and I love fitbit integration.

Whatever comes down the pike this year will have its flaw/flaws. I would choose this smartphone anyday over its latest current rival, the S5.

Well clearly I did .... But only because I got it off contract for near same price as S5 on.... But I have no regrets despite the negs, I like the phone.

Memory & Touchwiz were my negs on the S5, camera M8... Either way was less than perfect, but nether the less I'm satisfied with the m8.

I'm hoping this means they're using the 4 megapixel as a testing ground, sort of a way to build a foundation for when the go larger and hopefully nail the camera. As 4 megapixels go, its probably the best 4 megapixel shooter out there, including point and shoots at that resolution. So hopefully what ever tweaks, software or hardware, that they've used to get the most out of this 4megapixel camera will translate just as well when they finally move up.

Yeah I hope this proves to be the case. It is the best 4mp camera, just wish it was 8 :)

Like I say otherwise I'm really liking the m8....

How does the fitbit work with the M8, they worth the $$?

To be honest the only benefit the flex has over the app & hardware in the M8 is the sleep tracker and can be used where you don't perhaps have the phone.

The M8 pedometre is very accurate and for the benefits the flex gives you over just the m8, are hard to justify the $80-100 extra ...

Add the flex needs to be charged every 4-5 days, the fact to see a proper tracking readout you still have to use the app anyway - I honestly think the m8 will do by itself.

The only benefit other than sleep tracking is of course the flex can be with you all the time unlike the phone which you might not want to take on a run, or in the gym...

Yes I use both currently, but in day to day situations I think the m8 would do.

It fell out of my back pocket when getting out of my friends truck and it landed vertically on the pavement last week. Thankfully it didn't crack but it does have this nasty ding on it! What sucks is that this happened the day before I received my dot view case!

Yeah it just sends a vibration on your wrist... Not sure it would wake a deep sleeper, but I'm a light sleeper so it works ok for me.

M8 looks better to me but how is that possible??? Since everyone says it is crap

M8 look more natural, 5S is giving a orange glow to the desk and walls.

look closer, the 5s focused on the central image in each shot, the screen. the m8's representation of the iphone's screen is too blue for my liking. it's noticeably bluer, too, on the image of the lenovo screen. i don't think any of the images are particularly great on either phone, but i'd choose the iphone's over the one's.

I'd choose just about any phone's camera over the M8's.

I really can't understand their choice either.
They don't need a 20 Mpixel camera, especially if they are primary focused on quality, but why don't put an 8-10 Mpixel shooter in the M8 ?
The iPhone is the demonstration that you don't need an extremely high resolution camera to achieve good results.
An 8 Mpixel UltraPixel camera could have been very good.

That is the only reason I always put a case on my phones ....

Sprint & UPS for some reason overnighted my M8 on Monday so I got it yesterday and am so glad to have this phone again. There's something about it that I just LOVE. I basically got the phone for free since Sprint will pay my ETF and I'm on Easy Pay, which even with the installment every month I'm paying less than Verizon, and get GREAT signal (even have Spark LTE) in my area.
