They had gotten rid of their reserve inventory and had units for walk-in customers. So I go in and the guy says they are very low on supply and he will only sell to those at his discretion (is that allowed). So basically I had to argue why I deserved an iPad and it was up to him he wanted to sell it to me. I highlighted reasons why I needed it and he even made me show him my GPA and current courseload. I couldn't believe it. Ultimately, he said I dont need it since I already own an iPod Touch, and iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.

He could have asked you to write a thesis as to why you deserve an iPad...and graded it for grammar, content, neatness, and length...
Sounds kind of odd. When I went in and bought mine, they did take my ID and went to the computer and then came back and said I could buy one. I figured they were just checking to see if I had reserved one or not. I just walked in and bought the 64gb one with no reservation.
I thought he was justin trolling, especially after he made me use a display iPad to show him my GPA and transcript.
I thought it was first come, first served. That's the way it was with the iPhone 3Gs last summer. Heck, your already owning a number of Apple products should have given you a preferred customer preference. I would at least inquire at Apple and possibly register a complaint. You might even get some restitution from Apple for your being treated poorly or for your inconvenience.
Personally I would go back and beg for one.
And yes it up to the store employee whether or not they should sell you one. A few months ago at an Apple Store in Jersey they refused to sell me a Macbook, but after a hour of convincing I made the purchase.

I can't believe you let him do that to you. I hope this is a joke. I probably would have punched the guy, and yes I know it wouldn't have gotten me no where but I would have felt better.

While I'm no fan of the Apple store checkout process, this sounds like pure baloney. The only scenario I see for this is that you either look 15 years or younger or you are.
I know one thing... If Apple ever expected me to "beg" to buy one of their products, two things would happen:
1. I would probably say some rather rude things in their store and get ejected, but more importantly-
2. I would immediately get rid of every Apple product I own and I would NEVER buy something of theirs ever again.
As such, I find this story hard to believe, what with all the anti-discrimination laws in place. You could sue their ass big-time.

Of course! The USA -land of the brave and home of the lawsuit! A store can't just decide not to sell something like this for no apparent reason, discretion or not. Why would they do that?

I don't know if its different in the US but in UK stores can refuse to sell a product. Most stores don't use this power but it's there for when mistakes are made with ticket prices
Exactly. But they can't say "I refuse to sell you this because you don't deserve one.". If they worked on that basis, their stockroom would still be full.
Maybe your GPA wasn't good enough for him. He's most likely the Harvard of Apple Store Employees.
Go back to the store and look for dumb Apple employee. Most will be content with an average GPA from a community college.
