ATI Catalyst Driver Suite for 27" iMac 2010

Hi guys.

It seems the right driver for the iMac with the ati radeon 5750 is actually the

radeon mobility 5xxx version when running bootcamp.

Which one should be used in Fusion 3.1? I have a VMware specific 3d driver it seems....

That's likely correct for Windows side in Fusion. It uses a generic 3d driver that "passes through" to OpenGL calls on the Mac side. The only performance gain you might see is from installing the 2010 kexts on your host mac.

I really wouldn't expect particularly good performance that way, though. Anything current will be even slower than the mac version would be, never mind the windows version running under boot camp.

Farcry 2 27" imac i5 Quadcore 2010

Hi guys

so ive tested farcry 2 on different settings. obviously with native res and all maxed out its not going to run fluidly. but for people wanting to check out the graphics at max and play a little, that is more than possible.

i think the goal is to run it at native res at all costs. so i have it set to AA at 0 with overall quality set to high or very high.

you can adjust the settings: going higher with AA means drastically turning down the overall graphics quality. set it to what suits you best.

it runs great. when youre in the game you barely notice the difference between AA off and on or the graphics quality settings very high or high. so just enjoy ;-)

next up is assassins creed 2...cant wait for it to arrive >_<

Since the first beta build of 10.6.5 has been released to developers, it's a certainty that updated ATI drivers will be included when the final 10.6.5 build is released to the public. I wonder...will the 10.6.5 update install properly for those folks who've installed the new kexts unofficially on their late '09 iMacs running 10.6.4 (or earlier) versions of Snow Leopard?

Here are the OpenGL Extensions Viewer results from my 2010 iMac i7 with 5750 running OS X 10.6.4.

Out of curiosity, which iMac do you have? and do you have it overclocked?
Talking about Shattered Horizons, how is it at 1080p?

Thanks
27" i7 w/ 4850M 512MB. I'll check it at 1080p a bit later for ya.

I tried it... 1280x720 is fine maxed (no AA), 1920x1080 is a little jittery IIRC but I think playable, 2560x1440 -- not a chance.

Snow Leopard Graphics Update just released

The Snow Leopard Graphics Update has been released. I am at work and just received my new i7 at home today and haven't been home to open the box yet, but I'm curious to find out if there is any enhancement / drop in performance.

He means real as in an actual desktop 5750 card instead of the mobility 5850 that's in the iMacs.

I'm no expert in this field but, on the face of it, that's not a very informative comparison. The resolutions are different, for a start.

Can someone run the imac at 1080p to compare results?
Considering 2560x1440 is ~3.6m pixels whilst 1920x1080 is ~2m pixels I think its safe to say running the test at 2560x1440 would yield the same results as the iMac, which is just above half of the score at 1080p.

Although, I'm very much curious why 2.1 with the iMac only scores ~250 but the 5750 card at 1080p scores 2.3k, shouldn't the iMac's score be ~1300 like the others?

So back to the original topic of this thread that the HD 5750 is really a mobility 5850. So these are two similar but not identical video cards. How can Apple advertise one and substitute the slower mobility 5850 with no legal repercussions?

Yeah. Kinda cheeky, in the very least.

With regard to overclocking; can someone please advise as to how I can do this, and what the potential risks vs. benefits might be? Obviously, having just dropped one-and-a-half grand on a new iMac, I'm not looking to set it on fire...!

But, if I can strangle some additional GPU performance at almost-zero risk, I'd be interested.

i guess the iMac 5750(mobile 5850) isn't as fast as a real 5750

It's a bit underclocked versus the desktop 5750. However if you overclock the mobility 5850 10% to mobility 5870 standards, it should have same clocks as desktop 5750-- according to amd's stats for the card-- as well as having 800 shader units vs 720.

+5850M has 40 texture units while 5750 has only 36.

I think they use different drivers though, maybe that affects the performance.
