He is comparing it to the lone Intel based Mac mini you still can buy. He just forgot to add 10Gb ethernet for an extra $100 for a total of $1999.

So you can have the base Mac Studio (10-core, 24-core GPU, 32GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, 10Gb ethernet) at $1999 or the Intel Mac mini.

Huh so it is. Didn't realise the matching spec Intel Mini was the same price. I can't see it being in the store for much longer then. The Studio is a much better buy. And way more powerful.

Mmm. Should be interesting - I mean, the Studio has a massive fan and exhaust, and also doesn’t have a battery to worry about. It probably wouldn’t jump much if it did.
M2 should be interesting. Looking at the Max and the Ultra, you can see how the M2 will slot right between 10/20 and 24/48 (ie a 20 core CPU/40 core GPU Max M2)

The Studio has an internal power supply though. That makes a difference in the heating and thermals.

The base model Studio is very close to what I paid for my 2018 Mini i7/1TB and 32GB upgrade (done by me).

Given the advance in the tech, I’d say it’s a great value. I also don’t have to buy new displays and other accessories.

It is great value, especially when you price it against the currently available top of the range Intel Mac mini, with 32GB.

Totally agree. Configure the Intel-based Mac mini with I7, 64GB ram, 1TB ssd and 10Gb ethernet and it is very close to the Studio with M1 Max 10/32, 64GB ram, 1TB ssd. The edu discount makes the Studio $30 cheaper. At least here in Norway...

Also that 21% that sits on top of the Mac goes to your government. Govt gives you a metro discounts, better healthcare, money incentives to pupils at school who don't use cannabis, nice police officers, nice roads. Basically speaking you can clearly see that 21% is directly spent to improve your life as a citizen.
Thanks for the laugh. I needed that this morning. Looks like you did no research on this from a financial standpoint also.

I'm good with this device and going to order a base model with 1TB SSD. Ideally I would have liked a Mac Mini with an M1 Pro chip for ~$1,500 but the Mac Studio checks all the boxes and we get the M1 Max and 32GB of RAM to boot. We had a 2017 27" iMac that died and I told my wife we're moving away from the all-in-one so if a computer dies or we need to upgrade we don't have to throw out a perfectly good screen to go along with it.

I don't see what the fuss about price is. If your business lives or dies on having the most powerful desktop available £4k isn't a lot for the base M1 Ultra at all. My institution has an ageing video editing suite with 30 trashcan Mac Pro's and in final rendering they are no faster than my Windows PC. Ex-VAT it would cost less than £100k to replace them all with the base M1 Ultra, peanuts for higher education budgets.

I doubt that very seriously. You're not comparing a desktop to a desktop I bet.

For instance, I bought a Lenovo SFF Workstation, low end discrete video card, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Intel i9 10900 CPU (10 core) for $1600...

Only premium laptops are in the price ranges you quote. Low end laptops are way cheaper.
As the old adage goes 'You get what you pay for." Never mind thanks to the lower wattage the M1 Ultra will be cheaper to run (and as IBM itself showed PCs are not as productive as even Intel Macs) so that cheaper price in the short run may be costing you a lot more in the long run. (penny wise pound foolish).

I wonder if someone will design a mount option. I have my Mac mini M1 mounted to the side of my desk. Would like to do the same if I ever purchase a Mac Studio.

IMO this is a huge drawback for the all in one systems. My brother has the original 27" 5K iMac which is now dated. The base model Mac Studio would be a great replacement for it. The problem is he would have to obtain a screen along with the system. I know Apple would be happy to sell him the new screen but then that drives up the cost. So he's likely to remain with the iMac until he has no choice.

Is there no way to "hack" / "modify" the 27" iMac so that it can used as an external display?

He doesn't have to buy a new screen with each computer. Buy one now, and with the next computer purchase, reuse the screen.

I am hoping a third-party can make a Thunderbolt storage expansion chassis that matches the footprint & design of the Mac Studio; I would like to see two M.2 NVMe SSD slots (project/media files) and a 3.5" SATAIII HDD slot (Time Machine backups), I don't need it to be a hub...
OWC makes two different storage chassis that match the Mac Mini in size, no 3.5 drive though, because they’re from this decade.

Personally I’m looking forward to Sonnet’s eventual rackmount chassis.

Depending on what you consider a “hack” you have a number of options:

1. Remote Desktop from the iMac to the Studio
2. Use desktop Luna Display
3. Sidecar (which going forward is likely gonna be Apples answer to TDM)

None of which are optimal or technically “using the iMac as a display”, but they’re options nonetheless.

You would have to open it up and connect a new 5K driver board with DP outputs. They can be had for like $200-300.

Just search for 5k driver board like the R1811, R9A18 or U49 (has a USB-C connector). The LM270QQ1 and LM270QQ2 5K panels can be had for around the same.

Apple is probably using the new LM270QQ-SPA3 panel, which is a true 10-bit panel and 540 cd/m² luminance.

It has the exact same dimensions as the Mac mini, except height. So any dock can be used that matches the M1 Mac mini, like the OWC miniStack STX.

I have looked at that, saw it when the thread in the Mac mini subforum; I do not like that the M.2 NVMe SSD is not running as fast as it should be (OWC states 770MB/s)...

The OWC chassis linked above does, indeed, have provisions for housing a 3.5" HDD...

You cannot beat a 3.5" SATAIII HDD for TB/$, even two decades into the 21st century...!

Oh so it does, I thought it was a 2.5 inch drive.

No disagreement there, but the world seems hungry to move on.
