Big Brown has just left my home and my new (to me) 3.1 8 core mac pro is in my hands. I will have to unhook the spare monitor from my iMac to make sure all the bits work but its here. The world is a good place today.

I understand if thats what you need. But im going on to say what a massive fail of a purchase.

I look at my 1,1 8 core next to my 4,1/5,1 quad and it makes me realize how lucky I am. Then I want more and it's not needed at it makes me realize I'm just a sad person filled with silly desires like everyone else.

I'd down vote this if we still could. He bought something he's pleased with. Good for him.

I do not care what he uses his money for. He could spend a billion dollards in an pig to act as a computer because "that's what he needs" is it a waste of money? You better believe it. Lets not give op a bad advice and agree with him saying that this was a good purchase. We all work hard to buy this expensive computers and I find hard to believe anyone would recommend to but the current Mac Pro. So lets just be honest here.

To whom are you referring?
I can't see a reference to a recommendation to buy the current Mac Pro.
The choice was the purchasers and your input has no point to it, no purpose, nil, zero, zilch, zip, nada not to mention ..... diddly-squat.

1. It's already bought
2. We have no idea what he paid for it. Perhaps he overpaid. Perhaps he got a terrific bargain. None of our business, actually.
3. I can't help but assume he has a better idea of his needs than you do.

Ya, what an ass. With a few proper upgrades that machine will serve his needs fine. Gave my son my 2.8 dual quad after buying my new 3.06 12 core. He put in aPCIe SSD, and is now upgrading the 5770 to a GTX680. That machine is still going strong. Enjoy your purchase. You'll love it!

Congratulations!

To the OP...
I wish you much happiness with your new tower.
It is a very capable machine.
It is very exciting to get a new box.
I hope the negative messages have not dampened your joy.
I send my congratulations.

The deciding factor was price. I needed something with more chops than my 24" iMac, and this is what I could afford to pay for.

I hear you. I have the hex myself and it's a real beast. The new MP intrigues me but I'm satisfied with what I have and it's certainly much easier to work on. It would be cool to have USB3 but that's a nit. Enjoy!

I have a 3,1 8x2.8ghz right now and honestly it has been a great machine since I first bought it. It's no different than the latest ones as far as PCIe slots are concerned, the CPU's use hardly any energy and run super cool. My temps are always 28c to 31c. Fans never ramp up even when using handbrake. I've been wanting a 12 core latest model but am really wondering why. Plus these can be had for around $800. I say to OP good choice.

WOW!! ok... yeah go tell everyone to buy the cube... its a good deal its the best computer and it is definitely a good investment. Im not a bitter old man im just saying i would have never recommend it. In my first post i clearly said "i understand if thats what you need". So please. I think YOU guys are the ones being ignorant. If you are telling people to go buy the current mac pro because thats what you need and not wait a little bit for the better machine more worth your money then you guys are much worse than i am. You are the bitter old man.

You are an odd fellow, aren't you. You do realize that there is a *significant* cost different between what the new Mac Pro will be and what the OP likely paid for his machine? Why spend months waiting for a new machine when a 3,1 will do the job at a fraction of the price?

The mac pro at its current price is not worth it period. There old parts new things are barely compatible. No usb 3 no thunderbolt, old graphics card/gpu EVERYTHING!! that mac pro he bought should be priced 1/3 of the price apple is asking.

Even today my MP3,1 (2x2.8) still performs where I need it to. Albeit I have done a few updates; Accelsior PCIe 1TB card, SSDs, the GTX680 card, more RAM, and a USB3 card.

I won't be needing more juice for some time, and even if the new MP comes down into a nice price, I won't be going that direction for at least 2 years...

Good for the OP to get a computer based on needs and not the hype of a new computer!

Congrats. I hope you'll enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

What's the alternative Mac solution to buy? There isn't one. If you've got work to do you either get the latest and greatest or jump ship. The OP did the former and I did the latter. We'll be fine.

Enjoy it, OP!! Great computer with huge upgrade possibilities!
